HTC announces support for Windows Phone 8

htc-logoHTC today pledged its ongoing support of Microsoft by backing the new Windows Phone 8 platform. Building on the two companies’ long mobile partnership dating back to 2000 and including more than 40 million phones sold, HTC will be bringing new Windows Phone 8 smartphones to market later this year.

“HTC is committed to Windows Phone more than ever and we are excited to be bringing new Windows Phone 8-enabled smartphones to customers later this year,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation.  “With the introduction of Windows Phone in 2010, Microsoft initiated a new powerful mobile ecosystem with a consumer experience that was both unique and user friendly.”

“We have seen great momentum for Windows Phone since its launch in 2010, with 100,000 apps now in the Marketplace”, said Terry Myerson, Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone at Microsoft. “HTC is one of our closest partners and we share a common goal in driving people-centric innovation, which makes it easy to work together. We can’t wait to see how HTC brings Windows Phone 8 to its product portfolio”.

Microsoft announce Windows Phone 8 along with a bunch of great features

WP8

An event was held today with only people with invites from Microsoft being able to attend. A total of eight brand new features were announced for the platform which are aimed at finally competing with the likes of Android and iOS.

For many the most important feature announced today was multi-core support! This feature will support the same brands of processor that we are used to seeing, but in the newer devices we will be seeing more powerful versions of these processors from Qualcomm and ARM.

The start screen is another feature that has been completely redesigned to give you more choice, but also to allow you to cram more on the screen at once and just like all of the features announced this will come to all ‘new devices’. The only huge downside is the fact that windows phone 8 is incompatible with all current Windows Phone 7 devices! This is going to be disappointing for those who have bought a Windows Phone on a two year contract as you will be stuck on either 7.5 Mango or Tango.

The reason for this incompatibility issue is due to the support for much higher resolution screens, the resolutions that will be supported with Windows Phone 8 are: 1280 x 768, 1280 x 720 and also it will support the current 800 x 480 display resolution used.

ZTE announce another Android device: The Grand X LTE

ZTE-Grand-X-LTE

This new device from ZTE has been announced earlier this week to be released in both Europe and Asia in Q3 of 2012 which doesn’t seem too far away. The key thing to note here is the fact that the phone possesses an LTE chip for Europe! This is a huge announcement by all accounts because as far as I’m aware this is the first announcement of such device for Europe as particularly in the UK we don’t yet possess a 4G network.

The device will possess a very respectable 1.5GHz Dual-Core CPU, 8 Megapixel camera and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, unfortunately though these are the only specifications we could get hold of so far. The one thing that ZTE are priding themselves on though along with Qualcomm is the fact that this phone will be the worlds first single- chip LTE device.

Samsung to use NFC wristbands at Red Hot Chilli Peppers gig

Samsung-Mobile-Logo

Gone are the days of a normal wristband. Samsung are to use NFC enabled ones for the first time next month when the Red Hot Chilli Peppers play Knebworth in Hertfordshire.

Fans will be able to use their wristbands to enter competitions at the event as well as check in on Facebook at the Samsung stand: groovy.

Samsung UK and Ireland vice president of telecommunications and networks Simon Stanford said: “We’re delighted to announce our involvement in the first rollout of ticketless technology this country has seen.

“In future, everyone will be able to use their mobile phone as their ticket, whether they are music fans going to a gig, or a commuters travelling to work. So we’re excited to be aligning ourselves with that technology and to be bringing a new experience to both our customers and to music fans across the country.”

Nice to see NFC being used for something useful at last. It is one of those features that many of us now have on our smartphones but don’t really get the opportunity to utilize.
