How many are still using BBM for Android and iOS?

bbmiconAfter the initial surge of downloads of BBM, apparently hitting 10 million downloads within the first 24 hours after launch, how many are still using it almost 4 weeks later?

We’ve already seen the BBM app drop in the iTunes and Play Store charts and at the time of writing it’s well outside of the top 50. Was the initial surge something of curiosity or nostalgia among those users that used to have BlackBerry’s and have now migrated to other devices/platforms?

Many users that I know and support did indeed download and try BBM on their iPhone’s and Android smartphones but have since abandoned BBM again in favour of iMessage, Hangouts and WhatsApp, where they already have their contacts set up.

Looking at the latest download charts for the week, we can see that WhatsApp downloads, for example, are back to being ahead of BBM once again.

Personally, I was one of the 10 million to download BBM within the first 24 hours. I like the BBM interface and it works well but the fact remains that only a handful of my contacts (5) are using BBM vs a hundred or so on iMessage and Hangouts, for example. I’m sure I cant be the only person with this experience…

Not that I was expecting an answer, but I emailed BlackBerry to ask what the user retention of BBM has been. I have not yet received a response.

So what’s the consensus? Are you an iOS or Android user and are you using BBM?

BlackBerry Z30 Review

z30The Z30 is the fourth BlackBerry 10 smartphone and it’s the biggest yet…in every sense of the word as you’ll find out why during the review. I think it is safe to say that as a company BlackBerry have been having an absolutely torrid time of things lately, this is mostly down to poor sales performance of what the company believed to be their savour, their BlackBerry 10 devices.

The recent announcement that BlackBerry were looking for a buyer, has since changed into replacing their CEO and bringing in investors to try and move the company forward, this is a bold move for the company so lets hope that their smartphone improve in the future!

But for now lets consider the BlackBerry Z30, it’s the largest device that the company has ever made so the question is; Can the Z30 compete in the world of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or the Sony Xperia Z1 or even the newly announced Nokia Lumia 1520 with its 6 inch display?

To whet the appetite a bit check out Matt’s BlackBerry Z30 unboxing video before reading on.

BlackBerry Not Working on iPad Specific BBM

bbm-iphoneSince BlackBerry resumed the BBM roll-out to iOS and Android devices, it has been downloaded tens of millions of times and has been consistently at the top of the app download charts.

BlackBerry recently spoke to Slashgear and Andrew Bocking confirmed that BlackBerry are working on a new version of BBM specifically for WiFi-only iPod’s and iPad’s. At the moment users must have a cellular capable device in order to register and set up BBM. This is a situation that BlackBerry are looking to resolve and the update is said to be coming any time now. This will mean that BBM does not have to be tied to a specific mobile number.

However, there’s no news from BlackBerry for WiFi only versions of BBM for WiFi only Android tablets but one would hope that if there’s to be an iPad and iPod WiFi version then an Android version should not be too far behind.

No iPad specific BBM

Perhaps one piece of news that may disappoint iPad owners, though, is that BlackBerry are said NOT to be working on an iPad specific version of BBM, one that would make better use of the larger display. At the moment BBM will work on iPad devices but just a larger version of the iPhone version. iPad users have been hoping for an iPad specific version that was more akin to the interface and layout from the PlayBook.

Hopefully BlackBerry will change their mind!

BlackBerry to resume BBM roll out

BBMiconwhite.jpgIt’s now almost a month since BlackBerry first tried to release BBM for Android and iOS. You may recall that the release started in New Zealand on the 21st September but that this was quickly halted due to an ‘unreleased’ version of the Android app being leaked online and apparently causing serious issues.

However, today BlackBerry have now confirmed that the global roll out will resume and the app is cited to be available within the next few hours on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. Although we expect that the actual availability of the app will vary depending upon the each countrie’s store.

Head of BBM Andrew Bocking said: “Our team of developers and engineers has been working around the clock to bring you BBM – and make some upgrades while we’re at it – and some incredible work has been done.”

As before, a word of caution, particularly to those of you with Android devices. There are a huge number of bogus BBM apps still available in the Play Store so please ensure that you are downloading the correct and official version. Users are encouraged to visit BBM.com for more details.

Update: Anyone that registered their interest in BBM and email is starting to go out as follows:

We promised you’d be the first to know when BBM™ for Android™ and iPhone® is available.
We’re excited to announce that the rollout has resumed!

Due to incredible demand there is a line-up to start using BBM. But, since you took the time to sign up in advance, we’d like to give you the chance to start using BBM on Android or iPhone right away without having to wait in line.
Here’s what to do to get past the line-up:
1. Visit BBM.com from your iPhone or Android browser to download BBM.
2. Once the BBM app has been installed, open it.
3. When asked to “Enter your email address to check if you can start using BBM”, use the email address this message was sent to.
4. Get started with setting up BBM.
Note to iPhone users: Apps can take up to a few hours to appear in the App Store

BBM for Android and iPhone imminent

BBM for Android and iOSIt was announced at the BBLive event in Orlando back in May of this year but finally, this weekend, we’ll see BBM arrive on Android and iPhone. Starting tomorrow Android gets BBM followed by the iPhone version on Sunday. Both versions will be available free in the respective app stores.

The timing of the release coincides with BlackBerry announcing record losses and that they are cutting their workforce by around 40%. Many news sources are speculating that the release of BBM on rival platforms will be the solution to some of BlackBerry’s issues, however, we believe that, if anything, BBM finally going to other platforms will merely remove another barrier for BlackBerry stalwarts to move to another device.

Update: BBM for Android and iOS has been halted, more info can be found here.
