iPad gets Tethering in iOS 4 and infiltrated by Google

ipadtethering Although an iPad is more likely to be a tethered device not the device to tether to, Apple have seen fit for the ever-so-useful function to be added to its forthcoming (and long overdue) update for the company’s successful tablet device.  Running in much the same way as the tether on previous iOS devices that offer the function – hidden in the settings – it’s a boon for those with the 3G iPad as their main internet device.  This may sound unlikely but with the iPad no doubt finding its way into student halls up and down the country this autumn, it provides an excellent way of getting devices like the Nintendo DS connected to the cloud, sharing the iPad’s data connection.  Of course this is all subject to the iPad’s airtime provider allowing this in the terms and conditions so don’t go crazy just yet or you may get slapped with a bigger bill than you anticipated.

In other magical and revolutionary device news, an enterprising hacker named Hexxeh has claimed to have injected the iPad with a Google poison.  Sadly not Android but the next best thing – Chome OS.  He’s published a video to dispel the faker comments but beyond this hasn’t given any clue how it’s done.  Speaking personally I’d welcome the chance to break out from the iOS prison and try a few different things out on the undoubtedly excellent Apple hardware, maybe even teach it a new trick or two (but maybe pass on Windows 95)

Buy an O2 mobile at Sainsbury’s

O2 Sains

O2 has opened its first concession store with a Sainsbury’s supermarket.

This first new venture has taken place in the recently refurbished 100,000 square foot Sainsbury supermarket in Crayford, near Dartford.

O2 trained staff and managers will run the concession and will sell the same products and services found in a typical high street store, including both prepay and contract, the Apple iPhone 4 and fixed line services O2 Home Broadband and O2 Home Phone.

O2 claims the concession will operate to the same level as its retail stores offering the same levels of customer experience.

O2 is expected to open further concession stores within Sainsbury’s, which has a footprint of 537 supermarkets and 335 smaller convenience stores.

Windows Phone 7 hands on video

Windows-Phone-71-e1282045340363

As I mentioned previously I was lucky enough to pop along to Microsoft’s HQ in London this week for a demo and a go myself with Windows Phone 7.

The device I used was an LG one which we have seen knocking about the web for some time. It is very much a prototype so please ignore the handset and focus on the software.

So how did I find WP7? Well I was reasonably impressed. My time with the device was limited so I will reserve final judgment until I have a review device but it certainly has some positive features. I am still not that keen on the home screen user interface but I think it will be one of those things that grows on you as you get more used to it.

Anyway, enough of me. Check out the video below and we have another to follow later with some demos from a Microsoft dude.

Microsoft today announced plans to integrate MSN Music with Zune, Microsoft’s digital entertainment service.

There is a natural synergy between MSN Music and Zune. MSN Music will create links in its music editorial to related content on Zune.net, giving users quick and easy access to the music they care about in the Zune Marketplace.

On Zune.net users will be able to browse the Zune Marketplace and purchase music from a 100% MP3 catalogue or use a Zune Pass music subscription to stream music directly through their Internet browser.

BlackBerry Torch 9800 Review

9800-main

At last the Torch has reached UK shores and I was lucky enough to get my hands on a review unit straight away. You may have seen some time ago I did a demo video with the Torch. This was not final software for the UK but now the software is finished we should see it arriving with the networks very shortly, unless delayed again!

The Torch 9800 gives us a double whammy. A new phone and an updated OS, now called BlackBerry 6.

The BlackBerry Torch has had mixed reviews in the States where it has been available for some time. If you fancy reading what I think of the device plus BlackBerry 6, and if I believe there is a market for it here in the UK you will have to read on.

MS Office for Mac 2011 launches October 26th

mac office

Available now for pre-order, the new Office suite 2011 for Mac will be launching in late October, Microsoft have confirmed. The last version released in early 2008 is getting a little long in the tooth, and Microsoft have seen it fit to finally bring it up to date with some notable additions. Probably one of the first you’ll notice is the speed at which the programs fire up – Microsoft claim they have greatly improved the speed not only at start up, but in the program itself. Another new feature is a look similar to the current Windows counterpart, Office 2010 and its ‘ribbon’ menu interface. Entourage is also being replaced with a new Outlook client, though it’s unclear whether it’s actually new or just a rebrand.

However, if you’re desperate for the Office suite and need it right now, you can purchase Office 2008 and get a free upgrade to the newer edition when it’s available.

In true Microsoft style, there will be a plethora of different versions at different price points. The cheapest being the Home and Student Edition is £89.99 for a single user licence and includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The top end Home and Business adds the Outlook email client and, for two licences, rounds off at the top of the range with an RRP of £239.99.
