Has HTC’s Windows Phone 8 roadmap been leaked already?

Windows_Phone_8-4596_3_610x406

It was only yesterday that HTC confirmed their ongoing support for Windows Phone 8 and it looks like their roadmap of devices may well have been leaked already, according to The Verge. Clearly the below is subject to confirmation and as we have seen in the past names change so these may just be working titles.

Starting at the bottom of the range, there’s "Rio," featuring a 4-inch WVGA display, 14.4Mbps HSPA, and a 5-megapixel camera with 720p video capture. There’s only 512MB on board, but the processor isn’t bad – expect a Qualcomm MSM8227, a member of the company’s Snapdragon S4 Plus line. One step up from Rio is the "Accord," which swaps in a 4.3-inch 720p Super LCD 2, an 8-megapixel sensor with 1080p capture, 42Mbps HSPA+, NFC support, and 1GB of RAM atop a slightly beefier dual-core processor (tentatively an MSM8260A, though that may change).

Finally, the big guns: "Zenith" is expected to have a 4.7-inch 720p Super LCD 2 with the same 8-megapixel sensor as the Accord, 42Mbps HSPA+, and an unnamed quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon (it looks like the Zenith and Accord may share a similar relationship to the One X and One S at retail). All three devices are slated to ship this year, with Rio and Accord coming in October and Zenith launching sometime in the fourth quarter. Clearly, those dates are very loose at this point and subject to slippage depending on a wide variety of factors, many of which are outside HTC’s control – but if we were to get some truly terrific, competitive Windows Phone 8 hardware in 2012, that clearly wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Lookout: Peace of mind for your smartphone

LookOut

We’re addicted to our mobile phones. The extent we’ve integrated phones into our lives causes anxiety and panic at the thought of losing them, according to new research by Lookout Mobile Security. Additionally, this dependency has seeped into our behavioural norms, where we’ve redrawn the boundaries of what classifies as “acceptable behaviour” in our pursuit to stay connected.

Recent Lookout studies in the UK and US support the view that this is a global phenomenon:

· In the US,  73% of users reported feeling “panicked”, while 7% said they felt “sick” when they lost their phone

· In the UK, 46% of people regard their mobile phone as their favourite gadget (with a mere 19% choosing their car)

· Brits would also choose to save their phone first from a burning building (23%) – beating laptops (20%), wallets (14%) and sentimental keepsakes (8%).

With this extreme attachment we are seeing an impact on our manners and day-to-day interactions, too:

· 71% of us in the UK check our mobile phones at least every hour, with 58% of US respondents admitting the same.

· Over 50% of smartphone owners in the US check their phone in bed at night; 1 in 5 check after sex

One for the kids: Magic Town for iPad now available

iPad Retina GUI PSD

Magic Town, the first virtual world based on picture books, is now available on the App Store. Like the MagicTown.com website, the Magic Town app for iPad® is an immersive game where children read and play with popular picture books licensed from top publishers. The app has more than fifty stories at launch, with roughly fifteen new titles added each month. Just in time for the summer holiday, the Magic Town app gives children a mobile option to enjoy story time at home or on the go.

With hundreds of interactive touch points, the Magic Town app for iPad is especially easy for young children to navigate. They can tap on the big tree in the Magic Town landscape to meet Louis, an animated lion who presents a new, free story every day. They can also tap on any of the houses in town to discover picture book characters and related stories and games. There are houses devoted to fairy tales, fables, original titles and well-known series such as Aliens Love Underpants, Elmer, Little Princess and World of Happy.

Interactive touch points are also key to Magic Town’s stories, or Livebooks. Each Livebook has four reading modes. In “Play” mode, a child listens to a narrator and taps a flashing illustration to progress the story. With “Explore,” a child touches the screen to answer story related questions that stimulate development. In “Read Together” mode, a child or adult reads the text and taps the illustrations to move forward. Finally, in “Watch” mode, a child listens to a narrator and watches the lightly animated pictures.
