Yet another Android smartphone hitting the market with the Xperia name on it, this time the Xperia Go. This one is a little different though with a stand-out feature of being IP67 rated which makes it waterproof and good for up to 30 minutes submerged in 1m of water.
In terms of the rest of the spec it’s something of a mixed bag in my opinion. The 1GHz dual-core CPU and 512MB RAM keep things humming along at a reasonable clip but then we look to the screen and find a rather limiting QVGA (320×480) display the likes of which we haven’t seen in smartphones of this ilk in some time.
Then there’s the matter of the OS that the Xperia Go is shipping with. Presumably in a bid to get the handset to market on time, Sony have decided to ship the Go with Android 2.3 Gingerbread with the promise of an update to 4.0 ‘soon’. This may put potential punters off, especially considering the track record of the X10 and X10 mini OS updates.
However, with all that said, the Xperia Go still represents good value for money considering the performance and durability features. Currently under £200 from Clove Technology.
As always, you can check out the unboxing and demo video below and we’ll be back soon with a full review.
Something a little different for a Sunday morning. A couple of days ago I got my new watch from Tokyoflash. Tokyoflash is a company specialising in cool and unusual timepieces. Rather then conventional dials or LCD number displays the watches from Tokyoflash have many different ways of displaying the time from coloured LEDs with binary representations of the time to LCD segments and blocks.
The watch I picked up is the Kisai Online. This one has a series of LCD lines across the display that also run all the way around the stainless steel wristband. These looks like lines on a circuit board. However, when you turn the watch to face you, as you would when you turn your wrist towards you to see the time, the display updates and the lines on the ‘circuit’ move to reveal the numbers that tell the time. The numbers are a little abstract so takes a little getting used to but look great!
Have a little look at the unboxing/demo video below for more and then check out Tokyoflash.com
We first saw the ZTE Grand X when James attended the launch event last month. The initial impression was that this new ZTE handset represented great value for money bringing features and spec that you’d commonly find in higher-end devices while maintaining a relatively budget price tag.
With a 4.3″ display, dual-core 1.2GHz CPU, 8 Megapixel camera and 4GB of internal memory, the Grand X is probably the least expensive smartphone to be able to deliver on this specification.
Performance-wise the ZTE Grand X doesn’t disappoint as you’ll be able to see in the unboxing and demo video below.

As a fairly frequent flyer I was intrigued with this story when it hit the web earlier.
Australian air carrier, Qantas, are ditching their in-flight entertainment systems on many flights and providing each passenger with an iPad to pass the time. To me this seems like a great idea and I suspect this probably works out cheaper and easier than the bloated in-flight systems that most long-haul carriers use. How many times have you been on a flight where the screen doesn’t work or the buttons are broken?!
Now I am guessing that Qantas will be tethering the iPads to the seat somehow and at the very least having some branding on them to distinguish from those that their customers bring on board, maybe mounting them in the seat-back where LCD screens would typically be.
According to reports, the airline will put Apple’s tablet in all 23 of its Boeing 757 planes, making a total of 5,842 iPads. I hope they are getting a good deal on those!
Qantas has partnered with Panasonic to stream content wirelessly to the iPads from a central storage unit on the plane.
“We’re now looking at ways to evolve this technology platform even further with our partner Panasonic to bring new standards of in-flight entertainment to our customers,” said Qantas Domestic CEO Lyell Strambi in a statement. This could include the addition of internet access, live television, and the ability to order food, drinks and duty-free goods via the iPad.
Qantas’ total fleet size extends to a total of 137 aircraft with over 60 more on order so that’s a lot of iPads if it goes to the full fleet!

The guys over at eXpansys have kindly given us a Motorola XOOM 2 media edition to review. We looked at the original Xoom some time ago so we were keen to check out the follow up from Motorola.
The tablet from Motorola with a go anywhere, do everything attitude, the Xoom 2 Media Edition is a versatile and powerful media hub that’s awesome on the move or on your sofa.
The Xoom 2 Media Edition tablet has a 8.2 inch high definition screen that’s the perfect ratio for watching movies and with it’s new design it’s lighter and thinner than a paperback book, and just as comfy to hold for long periods. With an 8 hour battery life plus a super-fast processor, the Xoom 2 Media Edition works all day, either at home or wherever you want to take it.
