Toshiba K01 appears at FCC

toshiba-k01-1

Although Windows Phone 7 is the really hot mobile platform from Microsoft right now Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets will still have to make do for now as WP7S is only coming in stores later this fall. One of those Windows Mobile 6.5 phones is the K01 from Toshiba. Announced at MWC 2010 the phone has just been spotted at the FCC and its apparently coming to Europe and Asia at some point soon. We dont have actual arrival dates and pricing details but expect it to hit carriers in the near

I had a few precious moments with this at Mobile World Congress 2010 and whilst the keyboard wasn’t a Touch Pro2 beater the phone was a wonderful example of just how well rounded Windows Mobile could be. One of the most impressive features being the HD playback, smooth and crisp.

Xperia X10 goes on sale in Japan, Japanese go nuts for it!

Xperia X10 We’ve been talking about the Xperia X10 over the past few, erm, months I suppose but things finally seem to be hotting up, I got my Xperia X10 review unit a few days ago and the X10 has now gone on sale in Japan. Apparently the Japanese have gone mad for them and have been queuing for literally hours to get their hands on the brand new device.

The X10 was released earlier this week on NTT DOCOMO, one of the worlds largest mobile phone carriers.

I’ll be posting my video of the X10 over the next day or two before I go ahead and dive in to the full review. Don’t forger to fire over your comments or questions on the X10 and we’ll do our best to answer ya!

Apple iPad on its way!

ipads I’m sure that you are only too aware that as of this morning, 3rd April, the Apple iPad went on sale in the US. Still no word on the actual launch date here in the UK or when we’ll even be able to pre-order.

We were keen to review the iPad as soon as possible so appealed to our US followers on Twitter to see if anyone could help us out and get one for us. I’m really pleased to say that we had a few offers of assistance and thanks to Ching-Yao Yu we’ll have an iPad to review within just a few days, as soon as it gets here from Maryland via FedEx!

Massive thanks to Ching-Yao Yu for helping us out.

Please head over to the forums to start submitting your comments and questions and we’ll do our best to answer your questions and it’ll give me some ideas as to what to cover in the videos that I shall undoubtedly be recording!

No standard connector for WPS7

image_thumb7

Here’s a heads up from WMpoweruser. Microsoft will not be controlling the the hardware specs of Windows Phone 7 devices. As they point out this is a good thing for one reason, no huge Zune style connectors. However, it does mean will will still have to endure what is a pet hate of mine, incompatibility between plugs and cables provided with various devices. At least we won’t have to suffer the annoyance of the iPhone with all cables looking the same but only working on one particular generation.

Mio Moov Spirit V505 unboxing video

moov It’s been a while since we had a dedicated SatNav device in for review and over two years since we last reviewed anything from Mio.

When it comes to satellite navigation products most people will think or TomTom, CoPilot or maybe Navman but I don’t think Mio’s name would spring to mind for mot people but in actual fact Mio have been making GPS enable PocketPC’s and dedicated GPS devices for years.

When Mio contacted me offering the Moov for review I thought it would be just another Pocket PC style devices with built in GPS capability and maps from one of the better known sources.

I was wrong.

The Mio Moov Spirit V505 is a bit different. It’s a dedicated SatNav unit with not only a BIG screen but also a built-in TV tuner. Ideal for those that drive professionally and want to do something when they have to take their rest breaks.

James spends a LOT of time on the road so will be doing the review over the coming week but I’ve recorded a brief unbox to show you what it’s all about!

HTC Desire OTA ROM update

Desire-Brown_3-4_Right Just getting news in from a few tipsters that the HTC Desire has seen it’s first OTA update. You may recall James covered the news on the HTC Desire ROM situation last week and we’ve had a few updates status updates throughout the week.

My understanding is that the OTA ROM update takes us from 1.15.405.3  to  1.15.405.4

No I am guessing that this is to mop up any Desire units that made it out before Google approved the latest ROM on the 26th as the build we had on the review devices was already 1.15.405.4. I’m also guessing this will do nothing for T-Mobile or other carrier branded handsets as we know that the T-Mobile version was an earlier 1.15.110.10 on those.

What’s changed in this ROM update then? I’d say very little given its minor revision number but if anyone out there notices anything then please let me know!

3UK prices on payg set to rocket

3mobile

I don’t think this has hit their main website yet but I received a text from 3 with a link to their mobile portal (which unfortunately I can’t link to as you need to be connected via 3’s 3G to view it) which details a raft of price increases as of April 22.

I won’t list them all, but here are the main ones:
* Voicemail access is going from free to 15p/min
* Calls to other networks and landlines increasing from 20p/min to 25p/min
* Picture messages increasing from 25p to 30p
* Calling other countries in band 0,1,2 increasing by 5p/min
* Calls while roaming in band 0 increasing 4p/min
* Receiving calls in band 1 countries increasing 9p/min, band 2 increasing 25p/min
* Calling most 084 and 087 numbers increasing 5p/min or per call

Free texts, data, and 3 to 3 minutes when topping up remain unchanged, and data prices also seem to remain unchanged.

I’m quite disappointed that they’ve decided to start charging for voicemail when they were the only network not charging for it (it was a selling point for me when joining them) – and that they decided to go with per minute charges for voicemail instead of per call as some of the networks.
This gives the ridiculous situation where you could ring someone also on the 3 network to make use of free 3 to 3 calls, and if you get through to them it is free to talk to them, but if you leave a message, it will now cost them to play that message back…

I’m struggling to see the rationale behind them raising calling prices pretty much across the board without an obvious precedent, and when you have MVNO’s like Asda offering rates as cheap as 8p/min, 3 increasing their off network calls from 20p to 25p/min just makes them look silly.
