Orange unlimited data packages confirmed

There has been a lot of talk about unlimited data tariffs recently especially those rumoured to be coming to Orange. I’ve been trying to get Orange to confirm their position on unlimited data for a few days and in the end found the information I needed in the July catalog.

As you can see in the scan above, unlimited mobile browsing seems to be available on all packages that are over £35 per month but it would appear that you have to sign up for a 18 month contract in order to qualify.

I’m still waiting to hear from Orange to establish what, if anything, they are going to do for business customers on talk share tariffs but I’ll report back when I find out!

Mobile broadband on the rise

mobile broadband Sales of pre-pay dongles have rocketed to 8,000 per week in the UK, according to figures from retail analyst GfK.

Priced at around £50, pre-pay dongles are increasingly seen as a flexible way of getting broadband access on the go when used in conjunction with a notebook.

The GfK figures represent an eight-fold increase on to six months ago when just 1,000 per week were being sold.

iPhone 3G queues start in New York already….Crazy

image There are already 10 people in line for the Apple 3G iPhone a week ahead of its release, according to a GearDiary report.
“According to police they began this morning. Number one in line is a man and woman with a baby whose goal is to set a record for time in line and the first baby to wait with them (or some such nonsense).”
“This is the first line forming for the 3G iPhone at the flagship Apple 5th Avenue Store in New York City.

O2 iPhone 3G launch details revealed. or just another rumour!!

image A PC Advisor reader has revealed the secret plans for the UK launch of the Apple 3G iPhone. These include VIP passes for people who pre-order the phone online.

Callum McCormick claims that a member of staff at his local Carphone Warehouse showed him details on his computer that spelt out times and dates of the second-generation touchscreen smartphone launch on July 11. The iPhone will also be available at UK carrier O2’s stores.

O2 iPhone 3G pay and go, not till later in the year

image If you recall the story we posted last week about the pricing of the iPhone 3G on a pay and go non contract agreement which subsequently disappeared from O2’s site. Well the reason for this seems to be that it will not be available to buy from O2 at launch on July 11th. The new display benches in O2 stores for the iPhone 3G which are appearing in stores now clearly show "Pay and Go available later in the year" in large text on one side. This is disappointing news but was expected as I am sure they want to sign customers in to 18 month contracts and the lure of being an early iPhone 3G user might just sway you to commit.

Pre Order iPhone 3G from O2, we don’t think so.

image O2 staff have been freely telling customers over the last few weeks that from the 4th July you could come to any O2 store and pre-order the iPhone 3G, sign up for service, go through the credit checks and even arrange porting your number in advance so everything will be ready to go on Friday the 11th. Well it is total rubbish as apparently after speaking to the manager in a local O2 store today they have changed their mind and now will not offer any pre-orders on the iPhone 3G.

HTC Touch Pro or "Chunky Monkey"

HTC-Touch-Pro-Raphael-17-thumb Slashgear looks at the HTC Pro in detail. It looks chunkier than the Kaiser/Tytn II however the dimensions seem to be roughly the same. There is even a video so click on after the break to see the Diamond’s tubbier, younger brother.

Telus announce the HTC Touch Diamond

When HTC unveiled the HTC Touch Diamond in May, they promised that it would be coming to North America later this year. Today Telus is announcing it will be the first carrier on thoe other side of the pond to carry the HTC Touch Diamond. With this announcement; “HTC continues our tradition of creating a family of devices, bringing the HTC Touch Diamond’s unique style and exceptional features to a number of form factors and wireless protocols.”

Telus will launch a CDMA version of the HTC Touch Diamond later this summer for $149.99 with a 3 year contract. To make the HTC Touch Diamond even more attractive, they offer subscribers very affordable unlimited data plans like $15 per month for unlimited email and IM, or $30 for unlimited email, IM and web browsing.

You can learn more about Telus and the HTC Touch Diamond at: http://promo.telusmobility.com/smartphones/index.html?landing=product&sku=DIAMOND

Note also the subtle design change of the HTC Touch Diamond on the Telus CDMA version.

Are three year contracts becoming common in Canada and the US? I honestly cant imagine ANY phone lasting three years!
