It has been a rather rocky and somewhat embarrassing week for Research in Motion. Unless you had your head buried in the sand you will be aware that BlackBerry Smartphones in much of the world have been without data for three days. Here in the UK the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) was restored early this morning so users are pretty much back to normal.
RIM have today released a video where Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis explains and apologizes about the issues they have been having.
Many have criticized RIM for not being more open and forthcoming with the BIS problems, so it is encouraging to see the main man hold his hands up and say they are sorry and are doing everything they can to fix the problem.

With the imminent launch of the iPhone 4S and the new Siri feature that will allow you to use voice commands I persuaded myself to download Vlingo Plus for my BlackBerry. I used Vlingo a couple of years ago but the speech to text was a bit hit and miss. I am pleased to say that things have improved greatly now and as you will see in the demo video the application will allow you to perform a wide range of tasks on your phone without having to type.
Vlingo is not just a BlackBerry application. You can also get it for iPhone, Android, Nokia and Windows Mobile.
Tell your phone what to do! The Vlingo Virtual Assistant turn your words into action. Vlingo combines voice to text technology with its "intent engine" to help you quickly complete your desired action. Simply speak to your phone or type a command through the ActionBar to get just about anything done while on the go.
You can see my demo video of Vlingo below:
Motorola are clearly launching a new product on the October 18th. What it is though remains a mystery.
In a teaser video they have posted on YouTube they claim that the mystery device will be Faster, Thinner, Smarter and Stronger. In the States the device will be launching on the Verizon network. No news yet what will happen this side of the pond.
Will it be a phone or maybe a new tablet? Your guess is as good as mine.

We told you of the Xperia Active announcement just a couple of weeks ago. This little Android device is perfect for outdoor sports. Not only does it come with an armband pouch it is also water resistant and scratch proof.
Running Gingerbread 2.3, the phone packs Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine, a 5mp camera with HD video functionality, and a powerful 1Ghz processor. Xperia active is dust proof and water resistant* and uniquely incorporates wet finger tracking, to ensure the phone works perfectly when either the screen or a user’s fingers are wet. Not bad, eh?
You can see the unboxing below along with the full specs of this little bad boy!

Just as we predicted earlier in the week, HTC have this afternoon announced the HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio. Sporting a 4.7-inch WVGA display, 16GB of internal storage and running a 1.5GHz single-core processor the XL is a real beast of a device.
With a rear facing 8MP camera and capable of recording video in 720P HD the XL is essentially a HTC Titan but running Android.
We will bring you the full spec and press release when we have it.
You can however see a quick promo video from HTC below:
We posted the other day that the Motorola Defy+ is now on sale and the chaps at Clove have been kind enough to send one over for review.
I reviewed the original Defy and the main selling points for me were it being shock, water, dust and scratch resistant. This new version of the Defy does most of those however it seems to have lost the shock resistance which is a real shame.
That said, it has had an upgrade to its processor, now at 1Ghz which will please buyers. Running Android 2.3 the Motorola Defy+ comes with a reasonable price tag of only £246.00 including VAT sim free.
We will of course have a full review of the device online in the near future but in the meantime you can see the unboxing video below:
The ZTE Libra is the new mid range Android Smartphone from Chinese technology company ZTE. The Libra has a simple, classic smartphone design with a capable 3.5 inch capacitive touchscreen and is powered by Android 2.2.2 Froyo and a 600MHz Qualcomm processor.
ZTE specialise in low budget, feature filled devices and the Libra is no exception. The vanilla Gingerbread installation is as lightweight on processing power and as customisable as Google originally intended, whilst the Flash enabled browser provides you access to rich web content. The 5.0 Megapixel auto focusing camera lets you take a sharp image under most conditions.
Available for £166.80 including VAT from Clove the Libra is pretty good value for money. You can see the unboxing video below along with the full specification.
If you are an HTC phone user on Windows Phone 7 you will be pleased to hear that HTC have updated their hub. The update is only available for Mango devices but if you have not received the Mango update yet it is only a matter of time. Microsoft have said all phones should be offered the new version of the OS over the next few weeks.
George over at wpcentral has done a nice demo video comparing the new version of the HTC Hub compared to the old and as you will see HTC have made some nice changes.
You can see the video below and thanks to wpcentral.com for the video.
Blaq has been around for some time on the BlackBerry PlayBook but recently got an update bringing some nice few features to the application.
As well as bug fixes the following features have been implemented so I thought I would give you a brief run through on video of the app. It is without doubt the best Twitter application on the device.
Application
- Refreshing new icon – Crisp lines, bold colors.
- Native notifications – Native notifications provide an easy way of knowing when you need to get back to Blaq. It’s also configurable. More on that later.
Main View
- Real-time Indicator – To make it easy to understand if your tweets are updating in real time, we’ve added a convenient indicator.
- Read without interruption – Timelines (Home, Mentions and Direct Messages) now pause once you being scrolling so you have a chance to catch up without new tweets pushing you down.
