Vodafone UK first to stock Nokia N900?

Nokia N900 46-218-85

The Nokia N900 handset has finally started shipping to distributors, and it seems that Vodafone may be the first to announce it in the UK.

TechRadar contacted all the UK networks, with all of them saying that there’s nothing to announce – although O2 said is has ‘no plans as yet’ to stock it, despite CPW having a coming soon page offering the N900 on O2 which has since been pulled.

However, it seems likely Vodafone will be the first to announce the device, if its forums are anything to go by. While stopping short of announcing it to the hordes of enquiring fans, the eForum team are constantly asking people to keep an eye on the ‘Coming soon’ page, which is a big hint the red network might be the first to announce it.

One network that is unlikely to be launching it until 2010 at the earliest is 3, after it emerged that the SIM-free device is incompatible with 3’s latest USIM cards in the UK, although a software update to fix the issue is due before the years end.

OffMaps for iPhone – review

So, imagine that you would like to visit some remote country. However you wouldn’t like to pay for international roaming data (that would be used a lot if you would use built-in Google Maps) and you wouldn’t like to buy expensive GPS turn-by-turn navigation software (after all it may be that you drop by to this country only once in a lifetime). Or maybe you have only an iPod touch and you can’t use Google Maps while traveling at all.

Well, there is an app for that and it’s called “OffMaps” and it costs only $2.99:

3 reports Orange to Advertising Standards Agency

Violet-Cyan

3 has reported Orange to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) over its claims of having the largest high-speed mobile network. Orange, which launched the iPhone on its network today, claimed that it has a 3G network covering 93% of the population – but 3 said this claim is misleading and confusing for customers.

3 has been carrying out work across its network recently and is currently working in the London area to improve coverage. It has 9,192 sites in comparison to Orange’s 7,500 3G masts and claims to be adding 150 sites a week. 3 complained that if it applied a ‘different measure’ it would be able to claim 95% coverage and said it would like a third party to measure the level of 3G coverage to provide a ‘realistic’ picture for consumers.

Orange told the Times that it was ‘not how many masts you have’, but ‘where you stick them’.

Orange iPhone first day of sales

orange_iPhone_africaOrange has released a little bit of information regarding their release of the iPhone. A rather successful first day.

  • Orange are delighted to reveal, that as of 4pm today Orange had sold more than 30,000 iPhones across the UK – smashing what we believe is the previously published first day sales records for a handset in the UK
  • At the same time, Orange’s first ever exclusive UK app – Orange Wednesdays – has gone to the top slot in the Entertainment Category, and hit second place in the free apps chart on the Apple App Store. The app combines the latest film reviews and trailers with up to date info on what’s on, where films are showing, information on how to get there and the ability to redeem the 2-for-1 Orange Wednesdays cinema voucher on your Orange iPhone.
  • Orange’s 3G mobile network covers more people in the UK than any other, and is currently the focus of our recently launched £multi-million pound advertising campaign, which from today features the iPhone, entitled ‘You’re Covered’.
