LG Optimus 7 Review

Optimus7-main The Optimus 7 is LG’s first and only new Windows Phone device currently available here in the UK. The full touch slate design doesn’t seem to be that different from the plethora of available touch phones, but it does hide a pretty punchy specification sheet – the 1GHz processor, WVGA screen and 5MP camera (albeit required by Microsoft) indicates that this is a phone that means business. However, all the WP7 handsets now and in the future will match or even better these specs, so have LG placed enough consideration in other design elements to keep up with the competition? Read on to find out!

HTC Desire Z review

DesireZ-main The HTC Desire Z is the handset that I’ve been most looking forward to reviewing since it was announced along with the HTC Desire HD just a short while ago.

I do like devices with hardware keyboards even since the first HTC Blue Angel that I had all those years ago to the HTC TyTY, TyTN II and then Touch Pro I have rarely been with out a device with a QWERTY keyboard. For a while there seems to have been a bit of a gap in devices with a decent QWERTY keyboard and Android powered handsets with QWERTY have been quite few. Sure there have been a couple from Motorola but I was personally unimpressed with quality of them.

So now we have the latest HTC Deisre Z to look at. Running Android 2.2 and with the newest implementation of HTC Sense it promises deliver an unrivalled user experience. The operating system is virtually the same as the HTC Desire HD that James reviewed a few days ago so I’ll be concentrating on the hardware in this one.

Read on for the full review.

HTC Desire Z demo video

htc_desire_z Last week James treated us to a quick unboxing video of the new HTC Desire Z and then passed it over to my for review.

So I thought I would start off with a little demo video of just a few of the key features of the HTC Desire Z to give you a flavour of what to expect before I get my review live here on the site. It’s not the final retail version of the box etc. but the handset and software is very unlikely to change before it goes on sale here in the UK.

As always, if you want to ask me any questions you can do so via the forum or if you want to make sure that I cover something in the review that you are specifically interested then let me know!

Nokia X3-02 unboxing video

Nokia_X3-02-white Here I have another unboxing for you and this time it is of another Nokia X3 but this one is aptly named the Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type, I say aptly simply because it has both a touch screen interface as well as an alphanumerical keypad go boot so you get the best of both worlds with this device.

Nokia do seem to like their reiteration of names for their handsets because it was only in february this year that they released their first X3 which was an XpressMusic phone, now what’s special about this device is that it is Nokia’s first ever Touch and Type phone with an alphanumerical keypad as opposed to the QWERTY on such devices as the new C6, but what is also very interesting about the X3-02 is the fact it’s Nokia’s first touch screen phone to have Symbian Series 40 which suggests that they strongly believe that this device will do well in the market.

The handset has a relatively small touch screen display at 2.4" and it’s also resistive so we shall have to see if it is good enough to waistband the pressure from other devices in the market at the moment.

As usual the full review will be online in the next couple of weeks hut for now take a look at the below unboxing video and enjoy.

LG Optimus 7 unboxing video

Optimus7-main Yesterday another parcel arrived here in the office and to my excitement it was another Windows Phone 7 handset for us to review. This time we have the LG Optimus 7 (aka LG E900), LG’s first WP7 handset.

The Optimus 7 is currently exclusive to Vodafone here in the UK which may limit the uptake somewhat but it’s likely that it will end up as a SIM-free handset in the coming months.

The LG is one of the larger WP7 handsets sporting a 3.8″ WVGA capacitive touchscreen. As with all the other WP7 handsets out there at the moment there’s no user upgradable memory, no memory card slot so you are limited to the 16GB of internal storage which isn’t too bad.

I’m working my way though the review at the moment and have to say that, despite my earlier reservations about WP7, I’m really starting to like the platform.

For now you can check out the unbox and quick demo below and I’ll be back soon with more!

HTC Desire HD (retail) unboxing video

DesHD If you’ve been paying close attention you’ll know that James has already had his hands on the HTC Desire HD for about a week and recorded an unboxing video of the plain-white boxed PR version from HTC.

However, yesterday I got my hands on the full retail version of the HTC Desire HD from our friends over at Devicewire.com and thought I would record my own unboxing video of the retail package and have a quick look at the hardware.

Over the next week James and I are going to finish up our full review of the Desire HD and we’ll have that online for you shortly. There will be some more demo videos for you too. In the mean time if you would like to ask us any questions please do so via the forum and we’ll do our best to either answer directly or via the review.

Nokia N8 unboxing video

Nokia-N8 Nokia recently announced a new wave of handsets and among those announced was the Nokia N8. We’ve finally managed to get our hands on a new N8 to review and I’m starting here, as we always do, with the unboxing video.

The Nokia N8 is the first Symbian3 handset that we’ve looked at so I am looking forward to trying it out, comparing it to earlier versions of Symbian (I’m still using my C6) and also to other handsets that we have in reviewing at the moment. I think this must also be the first Nokia handset to have a built-in, non-user replacable battery. I guess it works for the iPhone but I wonder if this will be a point of contention for Nokia.

The N8 has a fab 12-megapixel camera with a proper xenon flash which is a real boon. Couple that with the capacitive AMOLED touchscreen this could be a winner.

Full review coming up over the next week or two but for now here’s the unbox and a brief demo.

Garmin Asus nuvifone M10 unboxing video

M10 The Garmin name is synonymous with GPS and satellite navigation and this new nuvifone M10 couples Asus’s phone expertise with Garmin’s proven GPS navigation technology. It should make for a formidable integrated navigation device.

Asus have crammed in a 3.5″ WVGA touchscreen which is ideal for displaying the detailed 3D maps, all of which comes pre-installed as part of the package. There’s 4GB of internal memory as well as a MicroSDHC memory card slot. The nuvifone M10 is also the first fully converged Location Based Services (LBS) smartphone with integrated GPS.

You get everything you need to use this device in-car too, a cradle and windscreen mount and car charger.

It seems a little odd to have another Windows Mobile 6.5.3 handset on the market though, especially with WP7 hitting the market this week. So to find out whether or not that all matters you’ll have to wait a week or two for the full review. For now you can check out the unboxing video below.

Toshiba Mini NB250 netbook unboxing video

NB250 It’s been a while since we looked at laptops or netbooks but with a seeming ‘new wave’ of these devices hitting the market, presumably to because we are nearing Christmas, we thought it was about time to have a look at what £250 can get you these days.

First-up we are looking here at the Toshiba Mini NB250. This one has been on the market for a little while but as the price has now come down a little this appears to be, on the face of it, a good value netbook. With a run-time of 8.7 hours (claimed) it could be ideal for students.

In the video below you’ll see me unbox the NB250 and have a quick look around the hardware. Over the next few weeks we’ll have a review of the NB250 for you. If you’ve already made your mind up to buy one IT247.com have just dropped the price of this one to just £254.99
