Gaming heavyweights Nintendo and Sony are set to go head to head once again in the handheld market with their respective follow-ups to the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable (PSP), both of which are currently due to hit the shelves this year.
Nintendo has the first-to-market advantage as its new 3DS console is set to be released on March 25th, whereas Sony’s new machine, currently dubbed ‘Next Generation Portable’ or NGP, is pencilled in for release at some point during the fourth quarter of 2011.
The 3DS looks set to build on the remarkable success of the Nintendo DS with a number of new additions, chief of which is the inclusion of a display capable of producing 3D graphical effects without the need for the user to wear special glasses. The 3DS’ bottom screen retains the touchscreen technology used to such great effect in its predecessor, while the two cameras introduced in the DSi model also make it over to the 3DS. Further new features include an analogue input ‘nub’, which will allow enhanced control over in-game characters, and both an accelerometer and a gyroscope to allow developers to build motion control into their games.
The last of the 4 billion possible IPv4 internet addresses could be allocated within weeks according to the Internet Address and Naming Agency. The Asia-Pacific region got another two blocks while the rest of the world shared out the rest – the speed at which ISP’s request new addresses means that we could be completely out from a few weeks to a couple of months. Fear not though Tracy and Matt addicts, this is no Millennium Bug – the ‘fix’ has actually been around for a while – IPv6 which has the capacity for each human being to have trillions of addresses.
The issue here is that there isn’t wide-spread adoption of IPv6 quite yet. Windows Vista, 7 and the newer OS X and Linux operating systems all support IPv6 out of the box (though you’ll need an IPv6 compatible router). It’s now up to internet stakeholders to see IPv6 as a requirement rather than an option if the internet is to continue growing at its current phenomenal pace.

Despite being three regulars down and in the midst of a quiet week Gareth and Matt manage to pack a show with all the latest rumblings from the world of mobile technology. James manages to break away from chairing an international conference to drunken slobber in your delicate ear canals. Samsung tease us, Rim pop out a few items, Matt shakes his fist at Orange and Gareth get’s ripped off by Gameloft for a whole £1. £1!!!!!

The original Desire was a massive hit to say the least (and rightly so) and it’s only natural that HTC want to follow it up with a successor. At the moment, this is pure rumour – nothing has been confirmed by HTC yet but evidence is building and it’s MWC in a few weeks time so who knows?
The picture to the right is what pocketnow.com have unearthed, and it looks mighty similar to the Desire, except it has lost the trackpad. What has replaced it is a chrome-ringed front-facing camera. The buttons tell us that this will run Android and from what it looks like, the screen is roughly what the Desire was (just right) or very slightly larger.
Engadget have in-the-wild shots of the new device being used in Taipei, which match up perfectly to pocketnow’s render. All we need now is an official unveiling, but for now, take a peek at those pictures after the break.
Today Google held their media event which was shown live on YouTube. It seems that particular rumour has become true. 30-45 minutes before the event started, going to the Android site (android.com) and clicking on the market link in the bottom right would just redirect you back to android.com. Before then it would actually take you to the Android market promo page.
This has been something that developers have been wanting for a very long time as well as Android users and it is now official, we have web-based Android Market access! This will allow users to buy Android apps and games online from your PC and thanks to ‘The Cloud’ you’ll have it installed via OTA (over-the-air) right to your Android device.
Also announced along with the new web-based Android Market (which is now live) is the native ability for in-app purchases! This means we will start to see lots of Freemium games landing on Android soon. Freemium games are full games you would otherwise pay for, but instead you can download them for free in exchange you have the option of buying in-game items to customize your character, boost your gameplay and all sorts of stuff along those lines.
Sony have pushed out three new cameras – the HX100V, HX9V and the W520, available from March to April 2011. Also on the cards are a line of new accessories, memory cards and an online private photo-sharing service dubbed ‘Personal Space’, accessible from Android and iOS smartphones as well as PCs.
The two HX series CyberShot cameras both feature 16.2MP sensors with a smattering of fancy features from full 1080p video capture at 50fps to built in GPS and compass (for location and shooting direction). Both have a 3 inch wide LCD displays, Carl Zeiss lenses and an interesting ‘Intelligent Sweep’ panorama mode for easy 10480×4096 res panoramic photos.
The Cyber-shot W520 is a new 14.1 megapixel compact with 5x optical zoom and a 25mm wide-angle lense. Like the two HX cameras, images can be taken with Sony’s Sweep Panorama and Intelligent Auto and viewed on the 2.7 inch LCD display.

RIM have this week released another video this time demonstrating the bridge between the PlayBook and a BlackBerry Smartphone. If you are not aware how this works I will explain the basics.
The PlayBook does not (currently) have its own PIN so BBM will not work until the device is paired, via Bluetooth, with a BlackBerry. Once done the PlayBook will then be able to be used for BBM, Calendar, email etc. However, once the connected between the two devices is broken all traces of the calendar and email will not be visible on the PlayBook. Now, although some people may snub this it is certainly great for security. In the unfortunate situation that your PlayBook is stolen your personal emails and calendar will not be accessible by the bad guys as they wont even be on the PlayBook!

Those cheeky chaps at Samsung are once again teasing us about what it is they have to unveil at Mobile World Congress in under two weeks. A short while ago we had the new image appear on samsungunpacked.com that led us to believe a sequel to the Galaxy S maybe coming. Now when you hit the site there is a new video with lots of people holding a mystery phone. As you will see in the video the phone itself cannot be seen as it appears within a glow of bright golden light.
