Sprint announce the Kyocera Echo – with dual screens!

Echo-300x284

The Kyocera Echo is possibly the weirdest phone I have ever seen. And why do I say such things? Well the Kyocera Echo is a dual screen Smartphone. It is a weird concept but it is happening. Over in the States (Where else would such a device be born) Sprint has just announced this dual screen handset. Think of a Nintendo DS form factor that is a phone, that doesn’t have game cartridges and runs Android.

Now why would you need two screens? That was my first question when I saw the first pics go up on the internet but the manufacturer Kyocera is saying that the point of these two screens is for “Simultasking.” Not multitasking, “Simultasking.” Apparently you can use two different apps on each of the screens or you can use both screens for the same app which could be useful when using Maps or something similar.

The two 3.5″ capacitive screens seem the only outlandish thing on the handset. As the Echo has the now standard 1Ghz Snapdragon Processor, 720p video recording and 5 MP. There is no dual core processor, no 4G radio and no point in being in my opinion. Granted it is an industry first which was advertised by Sprint and two screens could be seen as innovative in some peoples eye’s but not in mine.

Well, even if this handset is appealing to you, you can’t have it because it is on the Sprint network which is CDMA and won’t be coming to the UK as far as we know. My honest reaction, thank god!

Toshiba Tablet gets its own site

ScreenClipHaving made a real hash of the Toshiba Folio, Tosh have are stepping up to plate again in true do or die fashion. Toshiba Tablet is the cunningly titled tablet from Toshiba. This Honeycomb experience will feature a 10.1″ capacitive multi-touch screen running at 1280×800,16:10, 720p. the innards boast Tegra 2 from Nvidia, two cameras (2mp front facing and 5mp rear,) Wi-fi, USB, mini-USB, HDMI, full-SD card support, and 3.5mm headphone jack.

One of the big differences here is the ability to change the battery. You might need a screwdriver but having that option will shoot this straight to the top of many folks lists out there. Nice one Toshiba.

You can check out all the details on the rich website www.thetoshibatablet.com.

Huawei S7 Slim appears

huawei-s7-slim-550x362

Huawei’s made a good impression on the tablet market with the S7. What appeared to be lacklustre on paper turned out to be worth much more than the sum of it’s parts in reality. At the time it was mentioned that a capacitive version was on the drawing board and on Twitter today the unveiled, the Huawei Ideos S7 Slim.

Rest assure, if this is at Mobile World Congress, I’ll fine it and provide more info on it.

Are you the biggest BlackBerry fan? If so you could win a BlackBerry Torch!

Screen shot 2011-02-07 at 13.42.12

Those nice people at RIM are giving away a BlackBerry Torch to one lucky winner via a Facebook competition. The idea is to find the biggest BlackBerry fan here in the UK and the way you can enter is to visit the Facebook page, upload a photo of you and your BlackBerry and say why you think you are the biggest fan.

Now although I think I am possibly the biggest BlackBerry fan I am not allowed to enter. RIM have kindly asked me to be one of the judges!

The competition is open now and all entrees must be in by at 23:59 GMT on Sunday 6 March 2011.

So be creative, be original and most of all be lucky. Oh, and keep it clean!

If you don’t already follow BlackBerry UK on Facebook click here, like them and get your entry in.

Nokia E7 coming soon the Vodafone

Screen shot 2011-02-07 at 11.02.44

Nokia’s E7 has appeared on the Vodafone ‘coming soon’ page. The device was announced back in September but has been delayed due to various reasons. I first got hands on with the E7 last year and although Symbian may not be my OS of choice the device seemed very sturdy and a bit of a power horse with its slide out full QWERTY keyboard. You can see the video here.

We will of course let you know when the handset becomes available via Vodafone.

Next HTC Desire 2 flagship smiles for the camera, again

htc desire 2

Only a few days back, we caught wind of a render and a couple of blurry in-the-wild shots of the next Android flagship phone from HTC. The Desire 2, as it’s been called is running on Android 2.2.1 with HTC Sense and a mobile01 user has submitted clear pictures of both the front and back. There’s not much other information that you can’t see from the pictures. It’s evidently got a camera flash and a small hole which looks like it could be a second mic. The unibody design is typical HTC, very Nexus One like. If this doesn’t get announced at MWC this February, I’ll eat my hat.

See the back of the phone after the break.

BlackBerry music apps – Something for the weekend?

Media BB6 screencaptured1284710825008_2

With the weekend here I thought I might just mention a few music apps that you may find handy if you are a BlackBerry user.

Now we all know that media was never the strong point on a BlackBerry before BlackBerry 6 but since the OS update things have improved immensely.

There are a great selection of music apps within App World from podcasts, to radio, to creating music on a BlackBerry. Have a look at the few I have selected after the break or head on over to App World from your BlackBerry and see what you fancy.

iPad 2 display – thinner, lighter, same resolution?

ipad display9to5mac.com claim that they have the screen that’s intended for the next generation Apple iPad. The new display is said to be over a millimetre thinner (actually more substantial than it sounds) and lighter too with a thinner bezel. This would correspond with earlier rumours that the new iPad would be thinner and have a smaller bezel.

That wasn’t the only rumour – the iPad could supposedly be going in the same direction as the iPhone 4 – a doubling of screen resolution to an insane 1536 x 2048. That would of course require a pretty monumental amount of processing power and ram, but a commenter on 9to5mac may have crushed your dreams already of a super-HD resolution 10 inch display – he used the serial number (P097X02-SLN1) and an unverifiable method to identify it as an LG Phillips 9.7-inch XGA 1024 x 768 H-IPS display.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the iPad’s screen stayed the same and instead get a 3G to 3Gs-like upgrade; but would you still buy one if it did?
