Skype and Nokia announce Skype for Symbian

skype_logo You may well have seen this morning that Skype and Nokia have announced Skype for Symbian, which allows over 200 million Nokia smartphone users access to the service. Users can now use Skype on the move, over either a WiFi or mobile data connection (GPRS, EDGE, 3G) and it’s downloadable for free from the Ovi Store, Nokia’s one-stop shop for mobile content.

Lee Williams, the Executive Director of the Symbian Foundation, has just offered further comment on this announcement:

O2 rejigs again

Following the last press release whereby O2 decided to rip off their customers they have pulled a bit of a U-turn following a backlash from dealers.

O2 was to do away with their 18 month and 36 month SME contracts by the end of March to include a 12 month fixed line promotion with all 24 month deals. Now, following a upset from the dealers, O2 has reversed its decision and will retain all its original packages at least until the end of the year.

The new tariffs will be available through it’s business gateway.

Could this be the BlackBerry Storm3?

bb-slider-2_4I spotted this today over at bbleaks.com   

While the pictures are not confirmed, as RIM have made no announcements they do look pretty real. If this is close to what RIMs first BlackBerry slider will look like them I am certainly excited about it.

This could be what BlackBerry users have been waiting for. A big touch screen with the added bonus of the hardware QWERTY that so many millions of BlackBerry users love, including me.

Could this new slider also be launched with OS version 6.0 and maybe the forthcoming new BlackBerry web browser?

Apple suing HTC?

apple-htc_4 You may have seen the news today that Apple have issued a press release today announcing that they have filed a lawsuit against HTC for alleged patent infringement. The press release goes on to state that 20 patents related to the iPhones user interface, underlying architecture and hardware have been infringed.

These kind of allegations are not uncommon in the mobile industry however I have just received the following official statement from HTC regarding the issue:

Apple Sues HTC for Patent Infringement

Apple® today filed a lawsuit against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware.

"We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it," said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. "We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours."

Apple reinvented the mobile phone in 2007 with its revolutionary iPhone®, and did it again in 2008 with its pioneering App Store, which now offers more than 150,000 mobile applications in over 90 countries. Over 40 million iPhones have been sold worldwide.

Dell Inspiron 11z Review

inspiron_11z_open The line between laptop and ‘netbook’ has been blurring for a while now and the Dell Inspiron 11z sits firmly in the middle ground of the two and could be argued to be either.

Extending the Dell range that started with the Mini 9, then the Mini 10 and 10V, the 11z shares it’s predecessors styling but then instead of it’s smaller brothers Atom processor they crammed in an Intel® Pentium® Dual Core Processor ULV SU4100 and, as the name suggests, the screen size is bumped up to an 11.6" 1366 x 768 HD TLF WLED screen.

This little machine promises to pack a punch above it’s light weight.

Does it have what it takes to lift it from the rest of the pack?
