HTC Says Windows Mobile and Android both to stay

HTC’s CEO Peter Chou yesterday said, when delivering the company’s Q4 2009 figures, that even with a 30% year on year sales rise caused by the Nexus One they would be sticking with the Windows Mobile Operating System as part of their portfolio.

google_android_logo

“We continue to believe both Windows Mobile and Android offer unique experiences to different consumer segments in their respective ecosystems”

This news came on the same day that we posted news of the HTC Diamond 3 and will I’m sure it will prove to be music to WinMo users ears.

windows-mobile-logo-thumb-300x277-77862

Speaking directly about the partnership with the Google Brand Chou said:

“Our partnership with Google on the Nexus One shows our strength in innovation. It’s very good for our brand”

The data released by HTC shows that they shipped a staggering 11.7 million mobile phones in 2009 without breaking it down by phone or by operating system.

Looking back at the history of HTC and seeing how they have developed from a company who manufactured devices only for other company’s / carriers under the name Hong Kong and Taiwan Computer Corp. into a market leader under the brand name HTC (no abbreviation) and their own mobile’s makes for really interesting reading. Have a look at a profile on the company if you have some time.

Nokia X6 – Comes With(out) Music

For those of you that wanted the Nokia X6 but just found it a little bit out of your price range then this post will come (maybe) as great news.

Nokia have now confirmed that they will be releasing a Pink on White, Black on Black and Yellow on White X6 without the “Comes With Music” subscription.

Excluding the fact that it has no “Comes With Music”, the biggest difference from the original X6 is the size of the internal memory. The Original X6 came with 32GB and the new version comes with just 16GB (massive drop).

Original X6 in the Blue on Black Colour Variant

Not to fret over the memory size though as it’s expected there will be a significant price drop when it’s released later this quarter with the WH-500 headphones instead of the WH-701 headphones that came with the original X6.

This new variant of this Nokia favourite will also feature the new Ovi Maps with free drive and walk voice guided navigation as well as the Michelin and Lonely Planet guides.

Matt has already played with the original X6 so why not have a look at the Unboxing Video before making your mind up

Motorola Enzo or is it Backflip?

Rob over at phandroid.com just got himself a nice scoop on the new Motorola (we will call it) Backflip, so we thought we would share it with our community too.

The “going straight to AT&T” Moto Backflip is another Android based handset but the first one for the AT&T network.

Motorola Enzo 3
Moto Enzo / Backflip

Apart from the name what else can we tell you? Well the handset model number is MB300 and it will come with an older revision of the Android O/S which is the 1.5 Cupcake release. Apart from that info here is the specifications that are rumoured.

Motorola Backflip Rumoured Specifications:

  • Yahoo Search (Weird?)
  • AT&T Nav
  • AT&T Music
  • AT&T Mobile App store
  • Google Maps
  • Android Market
  • 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7201A
  • 512 MB ROM
  • 256 MB RAM
  • 3.1 inch display 320 x 480 (HVGA)
  • 5 megapixel camera with LED flash
  • WiFi / Bluetooth 2.0 / GPS
  • OS Android 1.5 with Motoblur
  • GSM 850/900/1800/1900 W-CDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100
  • Reverse flip keyboard
  • Rear directional touchpad

I’m not sure if I like the idea of the camera being on the QWERTY keyboard and not on the front of the phone but hey, what do I know? The other point to note is that the backflip will always have a visible QWERTY as its at the back of the phone which means the screen flips out to join it (bizarre if you ask me).

Motorola Enzo 4 Motorola Enzo 5
Motorola Enzo 1 Motorola Enzo 2

I have to admit though that the spec list does look ok and that it would be interesting to have a “wee shot” of it.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness Released

Like most mobile phone manufacturers Sony Ericsson have decided to release a nice novelty based phone just before Chrsitmas.

You may well be asking what the novelty of a phone that will cost around $990 (ÂŁ676) would be? Well the answer is that the Pureness has the Concierge Service which the Vertu phones have at a fraction of the price. Not only that but it also has a transparent screen which in itself is a huge novelty.

Sony Ericsson Pureness 1 Sony Ericsson Pureness 2
Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness

The name “Pureness” comes from the fact that SE have stripped out all the unnecessary things from both form and function and left only the essential phone functions.

SO what does this little baby have then (apart from the obvious)? Well it has a 1.8″ monochrome display capable of video streaming and viewing and. well that’s really it but on the brightside the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness comes with a 12-month membership to the Pureness concierge service which is available 24/7 via phone or email and it can get you perks like room upgrades in hotels, a VIP welcome, free champagne, discounts, tickets with better seating and so on. Point to note though as the service is country dependent.

Why not have a look at their microsite for some more details?

Google Nexus One Specification Leaked

Where would we be without the ROM hackers of this world?

The techy intelligent folk over at These Are The Droids have managed to break down the 2.1 rom system files only to find some of these features:

  • Proximity Sensor
  • Ambient Light Sensor
  • Accelerometer
  • Magnetic Compass
  • WiFi
  • Stereo FM Speaker
  • Noise Cancelation Chipset
  • OpenGL ES 2.0-capable graphics
  • Auto-focus camera with LED flash (which shows that I was right on the money)
  • Possible Snapdragon Processor
  • 802.11n wireless chipset

If the phone really has the features above then we can be certain that the phone will top speeds of 1GHz for processing and gaming fans now have an i-Phone similar device  as far as graphics go.

On another note, if you have not yet seen the start-up video that has been floating around then here it is.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2: DELAYED

Those of you looking to get your hands on the new Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 will now need to wait until somewhere around the first week in January 2010 according to the official Sony Ericsson Xperia blog.

sony ericsson xperia x2
Xperia X2 Delayed Release

The Xperia X2 is the company’s second Windows Mobile smartphone and although not directly the reason for the delay they have said that there were some issues when they started to integrate it with some of the network specific apps. According to the blog posting the changes are all minor and include things like extending the battery life and speeding up aspects of the software.

If you cast your mind way back to the X1 release it also faced massive delays before hitting the market so who knows where the future of Windows Mobile and Sony Ericsson lies.

TeliaSonera launches the first 4G network in Scandinavia

For a lot of people in a lot of countries 3G is still the most amazing thing since.. well, sliced bread but now if you live in either the Sweden or Norwegian capital cities (Stockholm and Oslo) you can get yourself this new spangled 4G 100mbps network.

OK, I hear you ask when we are getting it but don’t get too excited because there aint even a phone on the market yet that can make use of this new network, although I’m more than positive that they will come very soon (maybe not at the top speed though). Although the handsets aren’t there yet they do offer the connection to laptop users through Ericsson in Sweden and Huawei in Norway.

So what’s next? Well Finland will have their 4G network up and running in Q1 of 2010, and O2 is already testing theirs in the UK, with the disappointment there being that they aint allowing me to test it for them.

Only time will tell and I for one can’t wait for the time when we can have a mobile network 10 times faster than that of HSPA enabled 3G networks of today.

Google’s Mystery Clock

Not sure if anyone has seen it yet but when you go to http://www.google.com and leave the search field blank then click I’m feeling lucky you get hit with a countdown clock.

google

With basic mathematics it looks like this is the countdown to New Year in seconds however there are some weirder theories out there like the countdown to Nexus One or even the Countdown to the End of the World.

I’m sure you will have your own theory on it and we would like to hear them.

What’s Nexus for Android?

The simple answer is the HTC Nexus One which will be released, unlike the rest of the Android handsets on the market, directly under the Google brand name.

NexusOne
Front View Powered Off

So what do we already know? Well not a huge amount to be perfectly honest but we do know the it will be released on the Android 2.1 software release along with some nice new 3D elements for the app tray, more home screens and a new “preview all” home screens grid at the bottom of the home screen.

NexusOneQuick NexusOneHome
New Menu Style & Grid View of Home Screens

From the pictures alone we can see that the it works on T-Mobile (the Rumoured Partner) and that it has WiFi (which is kinda obvious).

NexusOnePowered
Home Landing Screen

The design is very much like a number of the latest HTC Handsets with the flush buttons on the LCD although for me it has the downside of having no QWERTY in there. From the back I’m not 100% sure if it’s a self portrait mirror or a flash, let’s hope and pray that it’s the latter.

NexusOneBack
Nexus One Back (Includes Free Post-It)

Only time will tell but the rumours estimate a release in the early part of 2010.
