Twitter on the N900

Got a N900 or thinking of getting one but not sure how well some of the must have features like Twitter work? Fear not, checkout the video below for the full lowdown on how to access the micro blogging site everyone loves to hate.

There’s a local application called Mauku but also a whole host of web services that work on the class leading browser, including Twithive and Hahlu.

Google Phone coming in January!

With Android growing so rapidly we have today had some good news. The word on the street is that Google’s first phone, the Nexus One will be available in January 2010.

nexus 22

Google Nexus One

I do believe that this will be the first device sporting Android version 2.1 which should guarantee a huge number or early sales. Although this device has been manufactured by HTC it is believed that there will be no branding on the handset itself, allowing for a total “Google” experience.

The screen on the Nexus One is rumoured to be a 3.5 inch capacitive OLED display with a resolution of 480 x 800, the same resolution as the Motorola Droid, but will be lighter in weight due to having an onscreen keyboard as opposed to a slide out QWERTY keyboard.

Although the specs have not be confirmed yet we are expecting a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Lets hope so, as if we have guessed right this device could be a serious competitor to the much larger HTC HD2.

Whatever happens, this is a great move by Google and we will be sure to bring you any confirmed news as soon as we get it.

Nokia N900 unboxing video

This is NOT your average unboxing video!

I’ve been trying to get my hands on the Nokia N900 for a while now, many of you have emailed me asking for a review or asking questions about the N900 so we’ve been bugging Nokia for a review model almost daily!

About a week ago I had an email from Nokia asking if I would like to try out one of their new handsets, but the catch was that they were unable to tell me which one they were going to send me! Not a problem I said, we’ll take a look anyway.

The Nokia N900

The Nokia N900

So a few days ago this large, heavy black plastic cube turned up in the office. There were no instructions, no list of contents, just a USB to MiniUSB cable supplied. There was no obvious way to open the box – a little puzzle! 🙂

So first of all we connected the box up to a PC with the USB cable to see what would happen, when Windows reported that it was installing drivers for a USB to Serial bridge and added a serial device on COM4 I thought it would be a good idea to start a terminal connection to it and, well watch the video below to see what happened next.

Red Dwarf app launches

On the 21st birthday of the cult TV series, the official Red Dwarf Soundboard App is now available from the App Store. The app means iPhone and iPod touch users can now carry the sounds of the Red Dwarf crew around in their pocket, as the rest of us are forced to endure them.

There’s no less than 32 iconic audio clips from the TV series, letting users re-live the classic lines over and over again from, you guessed it, "smeg head" to " smoke me a kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast".  There’s also a slideshow of stills for when the audio gets tired, which we reckon will be about 45 seconds after you download the app.

The Red Dwarf Soundboard App is available for £1.19 from the App Store.

Handy Shell v2.0 now available for S60

Paragon Software have released version 2.0 of Handy Shell, a replacement stand-by screen for your S60 smartphones which provides huge levels of customisation and interaction over and above the regular active stand-by screen on your phone.

Based around four different views of your device, the app is called up with the menu key, and takes over the S60 interface for a much more customisable experience. A number of plug-in modules are available including a new “Photos” view for instant access to your media. This sits alongside the existing plug-ins including weather and contacts.

Also added in the new version is the “3D Cube” spinning system for fast access around the four views (each of them is one side of the cube); this is one of the improvements added for touch devices. Read more at Paragon/Epocware.

Nokia’s first capacitive touch screen phone, the Nokia X6 is now available on Orange through Phones4u. The media powerhouse comes with 32gb of storage and unlimited music downloads with the Comes With Music service from Nokia.

A long standing compliant about Nokia devices to date is that they use the less sensitive resistive screen technology, but now that has all changed with the X6. Read a full review at Techradar.

O2 doing 4G in Slough

On O2? Don’t have a decent connection in your area? Then you are going to love to know that O2 is trialling 4G in Slough. The town most famous for …The Office will be not be able to use the network yet since there are no 4G phones on the market as yet. Have a read at the full story below:

You might still be struggling to get a 3G signal on your smartphone, but O2 and mobile modem maker Huawei have just successfully demonstrated a 4G connection — the first in the UK.

LTE stands for ‘Long Term Evolution’ and it’s an enhanced version of the current HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology that most 3G smartphones and USB 3G modems are currently based on.
