A cool bit of software

I have just stumbled on a fantastic piece of software for Windows Mobile 6.5

Its called “Tell Me” from Microsoft and will allow you to carry out many tasks using only your voice!

microsoft

Microsoft

I think the best two features of “Tell Me” are the voice to text messaging and voice activated dialling. I will be able to text while driving!

In addition you can say pretty much anything to your phone and “Tell Me” will look for it using the Internet.

“Tell Me” looks absolutely amazing and there is already a beta version for Blackberry available.

If anyone has the chance to try it before I do on WinMo 6.5 please use the forum to air your thoughts. I await eagerly!

Full details can be found at www.tellme.com/you including a video.

A New Operating System – By Google!

Google currently has an Operating System (OS) for mobile phones called Android. Now Google is developing an (OS) for PCs. It will be known as the Google Chrome OS.

Google Chrome OS will be aimed initially at small, low-cost netbooks, but will eventually be used on PCs as well.

Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by the middle of 2010.

"Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS," the firm said in its official blog.

The operating system, which will run on an open source licence, was a "natural extension" of its Chrome browser, the firm said.

The news comes just months before Microsoft launches the latest version of its operating system, called Windows 7.

So, it looks as though Microsoft may have another competitor in their OS market.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Firmware Update

Today Nokia released new firmware update for the 5800 XpressMusic. Being quite a major release it brings improvements in a number of areas. According to Nokia it should improve the performance and the user interface as well as add some new applications.

The new firmware version brings in the Mobile Dictionary and Application Update Apps to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. The first one offers you voice playback and text-to-speech, supporting 38 languages.

As the name suggests Application Update manages the new updates for your installed apps, making them easy to keep up to date.

The Popular Nokia 5800

The 5800 XpressMusic new firmware revision also brings two new camera features. The first is the burst mode, which allows the primary camera to take multiple photos with a single key press. The second is enabling the secondary camera to take photos. Up until now it could only be used for video-calling.

As usually lots of bug-fixes and performance improvements complete the change log. According to Nokia the 5800 XpressMusic handsets that get the new firmware should have faster user interface and greater download speeds.

Considering the enormous popularity of the 5800 XpressMusic it’s hardly surprising that Nokia are rushing to fix all those irritating bugs that plague its first S60 full touch handset. Despite some hardware issues it had recently, the handset is selling in volumes, making it quite likely that this is not the last firmware update it will see.

Resco Backup v2 for PocketPC released

I’ve been using Resco Backup for a while now and was pleased to learn that Version 2 had just been released. As I swap between devices on a very regular basis, having the ability to back everything up quickly and easily is great. What’s more, being able to put that backup on a memory card and then move between devices is extremely handy!

MainBasic

When using mobile devices, data loss is inevitable: operating systems can crash; devices can break down, get lost or be stolen. In most cases, the value of the device is small compared to the value of the data on it – think how you would feel if you lost your calendar, your contact database and irreplaceable pictures of your friends and family…

So far, backup programs were limited to protecting you from system crashes and operating / programming errors by keeping multiple copies of your data on an external memory card. When that card is lost, your data is gone – which leaves you with a single point of failure.

Backup version 2.0 is among the few backup programs which can save your PocketPC’s data from both crashes and theft / hardware damage. Our Palm OS experience has taught us that the safest place for your data is off the device – which is why Resco Backup 2.0 allows you to move your data to a remote FTP server automatically.

But what happens to your data while your device is lost? Resco Backup is the only program which has an answer to this question: we have a desktop tool which allows you to use your data without accessing your device!

Look up contacts, read your SMS or extract files – even if your device is out of reach!

Power users will be happy about our Registry Diff tool: if your PocketPC has crashed after installing an app, find out what evil deeds it committed!

Cutting a long story short: if you want to keep your data safe, installing Resco Backup 2.0 should be your #1 priority! A free trial version can be downloaded from Resco’s web site (http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/backup/downloads.asp) – the full version costs 19.95$ and is available at Handango’s exclusively (MobiHand release will follow in the near future)!

Mobile Banking from Lloyds TSB

Lloyds TSB have launched a new mobile banking application that introduces a simpler access method that does not require the use of a WAP browser. Once the application is installed and set up all you need to access the service is a 4 digit pin code.

Current Account

Lloyds TSB mobile banking

Within the Java based application you can view your balances, a mini statement of the last five transactions and transfer money between your own accounts. Transferring money to third-party accounts should be supported in later versions.

We had a demo version of this new application on a Samsung U900 Soul and the navigation was simple if a little clumsy as everything needs to be selected by scrolling through with the arrow keys. This includes when you wanted to ‘OK’ after viewing the mini statement you need to scroll down all the transactions to get to the ‘OK’ rather than pressing the OK button.

In my option whilst the actual application has been made simpler to access there are still improvements to made to the functionality.
