Just the other week HTC officially announced the HTC One Mini, putting to rest all the rumours that had been circulating for several months.
We’ve managed to get our hands on a pre-released HTC One Mini for review and so, as always, we’re starting off with an unboxing and demo video.
So have HTC just followed the rest of the crowd in releasing a ‘mini’ version of their flagships phone or have they come up with something practical? Check out my HTC One Mini unboxing video below, over the next few weeks I’ll be using the HTC One Mini in place of my HTC One and will be keeping you up to date with my findings.
The folks at PocketNow have a video up detailing a ton of new features and improvements on Android 4.3. The video uses a Nexus 4 equipped with the new OS from Google, and amongst the many new features comes a huge battery life improvement. Read on and check out the video to find all the details.
- Auto-complete in the Dialler – this is a clever function that makes you wonder why they haven’t thought of it before. The Android 4.3 stock dialler has been upgraded to include auto-complete within the dialler itself to help you get the right number more quickly. It’s important to note that some devices have this function already, but that was thanks to the specific OEM. Stock Android didn’t have that feature until now.
- New Emoji Keyboard – Google included a this new keyboard as an option for all those super-texters out there who like to add the context of "tone of voice/facial expressions" to their messages with more cute emoticons. To get to it from the messaging app you need to long-press on the space bar.
- Bluetooth 4.0 LE – This is one we heard about previously, but it’s still pretty cool regardless. The newest version of Bluetooth promises much better power efficiency, and should drain your battery far less. This new version also includes a greater range of compatible devices. (This wasn’t truly confirmed in the video, but the Bluetooth SIG has confirmed it.)
- Improvements in the Camera App – "The camera in Android 4.3 fine-tunes the way the previous version worked by placing the items in an arc with the selected item clearly called out above your finger. Also, rotating the device from portrait to landscape and back while in camera mode is now almost instantaneous."
- Better Performance – Apparently, the Nexus 4 is a great deal more responsive when using Android 4.3. It wasn’t really sluggish before, but supposedly the difference is noticeable. This is borne out in synthetic benchmarks as well.
- Significantly Improved Battery Life – Normally with this phone, Android 4.2 offers about 4-6 hours of heavy use before you need to recharge. With Android 4.3, the user was supposedly able to jump that all the way up to 25+ hours!
It’s exciting to think that software tweaks could result in such dramatic improvements. We probably should remain a bit sceptical, but that should only temper our excitement a little bit. Luckily, we are likely to hear all about Android 4.3 tomorrow during Sundar Pichai’s press event and the probable launch of the next-gen Nexus 7.

Last night, some pictures and a video leaked of the next-generation Google Nexus 7 Android tablet appeared on AndroidCentral. This particular version of the device is labeled, ME571K_PR1_SKU2.
Here’s a list of specs that came along with this leak,
- 7-Inch LCD display (unnamed resolution at this time)
- 4 gigabytes of DDR3L RAM (although the final shipping version may only be 2GB – this is unconfirmed at this time)
- 1.2-megapixel camera on the front, and 5-megapixel camera on the back
- Dual speakers
- Android 4.3
- 32GB and 64Gb storage
These specs seem pretty impressive, especially if it ends up keeping 4GB of RAM. We will keep a close eye on this, but in the mean-time enjoy the video:
Samsung have released a boat load of new smartphones lately, from the Galaxy S4, S4 Mini and S4 Active to the Samsung Galaxy Mega that we are looking at here.
Smartphones are undoubtedly getting bigger and they really don’t come much bigger than the Galaxy Mega. With its 6.3″ screen it stands out as being one of the biggest devices on the market and starts to knock on the ‘phablet’ territory. In fact when does a phone become a phablet anyway?
If you are looking for a mobile device that can perform the function of a smartphone and a tablet in one then the Galaxy Mega may well be worth a look. The 720p screen is great for web browsing and video watching and despite being a sizable device manages to remain extremely slim.
Check out the unboxing and demo video below to see the Samsung Galaxy mega in a little more detail. Our thanks to Clove Technology for supply our review unit.
We’ve looked at a variety of waterproof, dust proof and ruggedised phones in the past. Many of them, from the likes of JCB, are pretty basic or non-smartphones whereas those from Motorola may be water or dust proof but they lack true ruggedness.
Here we have something a little different that may appeal to those wanting something rather more robust than your average smartphone while still offering true smartphone features with less compromise.
The CAT B15, supplied to us by our friends over at Clove Technology, is an Android OS 4.1 smartphone with touchscreen, 1GHz dual core CPU, 5 Megapixel camera and built in 4BG storage all wrapped up in a strong IP 67 rated package.
In the video below you’ll get to see the device in a little more detail.
Here’s a short video for all you BlackBerry and Lewis Hamilton fans out there.
Lewis Hamilton recently took a training flight with the Royal Air Force Red Arrows and took his new BlackBerry Q10 along for the ride!
A few weeks ago James treated us to a first look at the new BlackBerry Q10. The version of the handset he had was a pre-release from BlackBerry so I managed to get myself a retail BlackBerry Q10 from the guys over at eXpansys to unbox and demo.
The Q10, with its fixed QWERTY keyboard is likely to appeal to many die-hard BlackBerry fans for whom a BlackBerry isn’t a BlackBerry unless it has a hardware keyboard.
eXpansys have both black and white BlackBerry Q10’s in stock and you can see the full unboxing below.
This week starting 10th June is one of the, if not the ultimate week of gaming excitement that gamers across the globe get to enjoy. I’m talking of course about the yearly Electronic Entertainment Expo in LA and this is where we see the latest and greatest announcements from the industry leading companies in gaming.
This year was always going to be one of the best E3’sever simply because we were going to see the biggest console battle between two companies for 8 years ish, the battle is of course between Microsoft and Sony respectively. Both companies have announced their new next generation consoles, the Xbox One and PS4 and to be quite honest before the conferences the talk was all about how Microsoft could ‘redeem themselves’ after the shambles they created after their Xbox One reveal event a couple of weeks previous. To a point I think that Microsoft did redeem themselves by showing some incredible games running in real time on their new console, but the problem regarding the trading in of games and the ‘online check in’ still remains.

While belt holsters may not be everyone’s cup of tea they are the ultimate way of keeping your device secure and scratch free. Expansys sent me over the Swivel Holster for the BlackBerry Q10 recently and although I haven’t been using one with my Z10 – my Q10 has been proudly on my belt in the holster for the last week or so.
Like previous BlackBerry holsters this one is made from leather and contain the ‘special magnet’ which turns the Q10’s display off when you place it in the holster. The reverse happens when you remove the BlackBerry; the screen automatically will be on – Magic!
In terms of build quality you don’t get much better. The holster itself is crafted from genuine leather and the swivel belt clip feels solid as a rock. With the holster having the ‘swivel’ feature you can position your BlackBerry Q10 however you most find it easiest to access.
The holster is in stock at Expansys if you want some added protection and will set you back £34.99. It isn’t cheap but it is a premium accessory and money well spent if you are investing in a £500+ smartphone.
You can check out a quick hands on video of the holster below:
