Essential accessories for your BlackBerry Bold 9900 – video

Clove vector logo

The chaps at Clove have been good enough to send through some BlackBerry Bold 9900 accessories for us to test out and use. As well as the charging dock we have three cases which all are of top quality. We all know we can pick up cheap ones on sites such as eBay, but if you have a £500 Smartphone i would suggest buying a decent branded accessory for the ultimate protection.

You can see the video below and if you fancy checking out the featured items on the Clove site the links are as follows.

Samsung improves bada

samsung-bada-open-mobile-platform

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd, today announced the launch of bada 2.0 SDK (Software Development Kit), an application development tool for Samsung’s mobile platform which is expected to expand the global distribution of bada smartphones. Three new Wave smartphones, powered by bada 2.0, will follow later this year, ranging from premium models with enhanced performance to entry-level devices that focus on affordability.

The expansion of the bada platform follows the success of the seven existing Samsung Wave devices, which have seen significant global sales. They have proved extremely popular in Europe, China and Southeast Asia thanks to their affordability and functionality, whilst the user-experience and touch interface have helped introduce existing Samsung feature phone users to smartphone services and application experiences.

bada 2.0 includes a number of new features, including multi-tasking, Wi-Fi Direct, Near Field Communication (NFC) and voice recognition. It enables owners of smartphone devices to experience advanced services such as mobile payment, transport pass-card recharge and file sharing without Internet networking. Improved support for web applications such as Flash and HTML5, means users can enjoy enhanced web capabilities, and anyone with a smartphone based on bada 2.0 will be able to run any web application developed with Flash or HTML.

Samsung Galaxy W coming to Three – Video

samsung-galaxy-w

We mentioned yesterday about the four new Galaxy phones that Samsung announced. Three were quick of the mark to let us know that they will be stocking the Galaxy W soon.

Running on a 1.4GHz processor, the smartphone is one of the fastest devices in our portfolio.  It’s great at navigation, web browsing and using lots of apps at the same time.

The Galaxy W has a cool design and a 5MP camera which is great for those wanting to take loads of photos on an ultra-portable phone.  There is also Social Hub, a service provided by Samsung, which gathers all your messages, from Facebook, your work email, Twitter, LinkedIn, and puts them onto one page.  For those of you who haven’t already tried this, Samsung’s Social Hub works great on the new Galaxy W.

You can see a short video about the Samsung Galaxy below courtesy of the Three Blog.

BlackBerry Curve 9360 – Hands on video

Screen Shot 2011-08-23 at 12.11.18

I popped along to the press event held by Research in Motion today to check out the new BlackBerry Curve 9360. Running BlackBerry 7 and with some improved specs such as screen resolution, camera and a 800mhz processor this new addition to the Curve family looks to be a huge hit.

With the BlackBerry Curve being the best selling Smartphone in the UK the big question will be ‘is how much is this one going to cost?’ As yet I cannot answer that as it will depend on the carrier but it has to fall in line with the current 3G Curve, the 9300.

As soon as we can get our hands on a review device we will of course bring you an unboxing video as well as the full review but in the meantime you can see my hands on video from today below.

Advent Vega gets honeycomb 3.2

advent-vega_feature_0ff975fc-7766-4e23-96ef-c53fa4979bb3Though the Advent Vega ships with a version of Android better suited for mid-range handsets than a decent tablet, for its price you really can’t complain. After Honeycomb was first ported to the budget dual-core tablet back in the Spring, the latest release of the OS has been shoehorned onto the slate, complete with native GPU acceleration. There are still some bugs in this unofficial Android 3.2 build, as should be expected, but weighing your options that seems better than nothing. You can check out the ROM and instructions at the the Tablet Roms site. There is a video demo after the break.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro unboxing video

Mini_pro_Black When Sony Ericsson released their X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro handsets last year they were met with fairly mixed reception. Initially there was a lot of interest the two little devices but as they shipped with Android 1.6 and it became more apparent that updates to later versions of the OS were less and less likely their popularity was somewhat short-lived.

I think it fair to say that Sony Ericsson have learned from the mistakes made with the X10’s.

So now we have the Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro to look at. Originally known as the X10 Mini Pro 2, SE have now dropped X10 from the name. The specification has been updated quite drastically and although the overall size and form is virtually the same they’ve managed to shoehorn in 1 GHz CPU, plenty of RAM, 5MP camera and HVGA LED back-lit display.

Performance is impressive. Check out the unboxing below and see the benchmarks for yourself!

BlackBerry helping the UK Police fight crime on our streets

police-blackberry-access-records-0

With the recent riots taking place across the UK, Research in Motion have been getting some pretty negative press due to rioters using BlackBerry Messenger as one form of communication. With the BlackBerry being so popular these days of course BBM will be used, but it will not have been the only form of communication for these thugs. If the BlackBerry didn’t have such a huge market share in the UK then other applications would have got the publicity.

But this article isn’t about that. What interests me is that although the Police are getting stick from members of the press, it is the Police themselves that are using the BlackBerry solution to make policing the streets more efficient.

Several UK Police Forces now use the BlackBerry solution routinely and others are currently trialing it.

As you can see below it is not only specific Police applications that are in use by our Police. They too are jumping on the social networking band wagon.

Orange Monte Carlo Unboxing Video

orange-monte-carlo-420x315_2

I did a post the other day about the Orange Monte Carlo possibly being bargain of the year and I strongly believe it will be. Orange had the same success last year with The San Francisco and the Monte Carlo like the San Fran is also made by ZTE.

At £150 on PAYG you get fantastic value for money. Sporting a 4.3 inch touch screen and running Android 2.3.4 the Monte Carlo may not be as well specced as the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation but there is a massive difference in price.

The Monte Carlo is actually the ZTE Skate but you can’t buy that yet so if you want a big Android phone that wont break the bank I suggest giving this one some thought.

Matt has unboxed the Monte Carlo over the weekend and you can see the video below along with a reminder of the devices main features.

Everything Everywhere – East Africa Famine Appeal

Screen Shot 2011-08-12 at 09.38.43

UNICEF is urgently appealing for emergency assistance for the millions of children affected by the drought and food crisis across the Horn of Africa. The situation in the region is worsening by the day, with drought, famine and rising food prices affecting more than 12 million people. Children are most vulnerable, with UNICEF estimating that more than two million children in the Horn of Africa region are affected and a child is dying from starvation every six minutes in Southern Somalia, the worst hit area.

UNICEF is scaling up life-saving efforts by providing malnourished children with life-saving emergency food, access to safe water and sanitation, as well as preventing the spread of killer diseases including measles through vaccination campaigns.

UNICEF is the main provider of life-saving emergency food for children in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti but need more funds urgently to reach children in the worst affected regions as quickly as possible to prevent more children from dying.

Just £5 can help feed a child for an entire week.

Everything Everywhere, which runs the Orange and T-Mobile brands, and is UNICEF UK’s official disaster and emergency response partner, has launched a text donation appeal to encourage customers to help UNICEF save lives in East Africa.
