Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-804 Review

Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-804 Review

I am sure, like me, you have always been told to never judge a book by its cover, or in this case never judge a Bluetooth headset by its box. Well the later statement would be extremely difficult given the fantastically creative packaging for Nokia’s smallest ever headset – the BH-804. Packaging which will have gadget fans gleaming and environmentalists screaming.

BH804_boxThe Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-804

If you have not yet experienced the wonderful treasure chest of goodness otherwise known as the packaging yet let me direct you to Matt’s recent unboxing video.

What’s in the box?

  • Nokia BH-804 Headset
  • Lanyard carrying strap
  • Additional rubber earpiece covers (x2)
  • Ear loop
  • Mains charger (micro USB connection)
  • Adaptor cap (to connect mains charger to the headset)
  • Desktop charging stand

Nokia BH-804 Specification:

  • Dimensions: 42 x 13.6 x 6 mm
  • Weight: 7.2g
  • Operating keys: Answer/end/power
  • microUSB charging connector
  • Operating range (maximum): 10 m
  • Operating time (maximum): 4 h
  • Standby time (maximum): 150 h
  • Charging time (maximum): 1 h
  • Compatible Nokia chargers: Nokia Travel Charger AC-6/DC-6
  • Bluetooth 2.0 specification with EDR
  • Hands-Free (HFP) Profile 1.5 and Headset (HSP) Profile 1.1

The headset.

The headset comes in at 42 x 13.6 x 6 mm and just over 7g so not only is it the smallest but also one of the lightest I have ever seen.

Personally I have never really been a fan of Bluetooth headsets. I can just about see their purpose but the thought of having a small tusk like item sticking out of my ear all the time is not an idea that has been particularly appealing. But, I have to say even I couldn’t help but be impressed by the BH-804, it is sleek, stylish, and surprisingly comfortable.

The idea behind the size of the device is to give the wearer the impression that they are not wearing a headset at all and just enhance the experience of wearing one. For that reason it does come just as it is with no over ear loop attached. However, even after switching the different sized earphone covers around I still found myself reaching for the comfort and security of the bundled over ear loop.

BH804_2

But, to take the grand total of good old fashioned clichés in this review to two. ‘beauty is only skin deep’. However, I am pleased to announce that the BH-804 does not disappoint on substance. Sound quality is fantastic and although I have limited experience of Bluetooth headsets I have sampled a few in the past, none of which compare quality-wise to the BH-804. This increased sound quality I imagine is largely due to the enhanced audio quality with digital signal processing (DSP) which is used for background noise cancelation which, I have to say although it is not as effective as being locked in a chamber of silence it does do the job cutting out the most obvious and somewhat distracting sounds of the world. I experienced little to no muffling and clarity was excellent with no need to sound like a broken record demanding everything be repeated through miscommunication.

The device is simple to use with just two buttons to get your head around and connecting the headset to your Bluetooth enabled mobile device is as simple as well connecting a Bluetooth headset to a Bluetooth enabled device in other words ‘simple’.

The device comes with a claim of 150 hours standby and around 4 hours talk time which is more than acceptable and should leave with few problems. As for charging the device, this is handled via micro USB either through the simple USB charger or via the included desk dock and Nokia claim just 1 hours charge should be sufficient to fulfil the above stated battery life.

Conclusion

Overall, the Nokia BH-804 is an extremely accomplished item. It is sleek, sexy and stylish, and although Bluetooth headsets are very much something you either love or hate, if you are in the love bracket, the BH-804 is certainly worth a look to give you that polished look of sophistication on the move.

T-Mobile USA Working on Two Android Devices

Written by on April 11, 2009 in News with 0 Comments

T-Mobile USA are working on two Android-based non-smartphone devices, the first being a data-enabled home phone to be followed by a 7-inch touchscreen tablet.  According to documents obtained by the NYT, the two devices will launch early in 2010 and be intended for in home use rather than mobile use.

Details on both devices are very sparse at present.

The home phone is said to have a recharging dock, together with a separate base station that would handle data synchronization.  It sounds similar to the Verizon Hub or perhaps iriver’s WAVE HOME.

As for the tablet, that’s described as a small laptop without a keyboard, using a 7-inch touchscreen for control.  As well as basic internet access – the NYT suggest checking the weather – it could be used as a touchscreen remote for other devices in the home.  No specific availability details have been revealed, but the home phone is expected to launch in early 2010, with the tablet following “soon after”.

Acer DX900 unboxing video

The Acer DX900 is one of the first, if not the first Dual-SIM Windows Mobile handsets to be sold here in the UK. The DX900 will allow you to combine your work and personal mobile numbers in to one handset which means that many will be able to carry one instead of two phones!

This is the first handset to be released by Acer since they acquired E-Ten last year. There is a lot about the DX900 that reminds us of earlier Glofiish products.

The Acer DX900

The Acer DX900

The Acer DX900 allows you to have uninterrupted access to two separate phone services, for example; one for business and one personal, or one for calls and another for data, in a single device. Frequent business travelers can use local SIM card and home SIM card in the same device at the same time.  International business and cross boarder travelling becomes so much easier with this device from Acer.

The DX900 features support for both high-speed 3.5G (UMTS/HSDPA) and 2G (GSM/EDGE) communications, as well as GPS and Wi-Fi connectivity, a high-resolution VGA display, and a 3-megapixel auto-focus camera.

We’ll be reviewing the DX900 over the next couple of weeks so for now we hope you enjoy the unboxing video:

Windows Mobile answer the Facebook questions

image We reported a while ago that the Windows Mobile Team were asking for questions on their Facebook channel and they have eventually got round to answering some of the questions thrown at them. Unfortunately there is no order to the questions and answers so we have put them together to make it easy to follow. As expected a lot of “we can’t comment on that at this time” answers but there is some interesting information none the less. Take a look after the break, there are quite a few questions.

SanDisk Sansa Express unboxing video

SanDisk Sansa Express unboxing video

Over the past few years we’ve looked at and reviewed almost all of the media players in the Sansa range from SanDisk from the original e260 onwards. However I noticed one model missing from our review list; the Sansa Express.

The SanDisk Sansa Express

The SanDisk Sansa Express

I’ve been extremely impressed with all of the models in the Sansa range and still use the original e260 to this day. They are all simple to use with an intuitive user interface but the one thing that has always made these media players stand out is the phenomenal battery life. I can use my e260 for 2 hours per pay and I dont have to charge it for WEEKS!

The Sansa Express is at the lower end of the model range. It’s pretty small, not much bigger than a regular USB memory key and in fact that’s exactly what it looks like. Because of its diminutive size you wont be able to watch video on this model but there is a decent OLED display on the front so that you can look through your music list and see what’s currently playing etc. There’s even a built in FM radio.

The Express comes in several different capacities, we are reviewing the 1GB model. However the nice thing about the Express is that it had a MicroSD card slot so that you can increase the storage space available and it will support up to 8GB SDHC memory cards.

I’ll be spending the next few weeks using the SanDisk Sansa Express on my commute and will be back with a review soon. Have a look at my brief unboxing video for mode details:

  • Direct USB connector-No cable needed
  • New sleek, compact design
  • With this MP3 player you can enjoy music & FM radio
  • Built-in Mic for Voice Recording
  • Four-line, bright OLED screen
  • Digital FM tuner, with FM recording
  • Simple to use controls for fast device interface navigation

Huawei’s first Android phone

Huawei’s first Android phone has been confirmed as due for launch on T-Mobile later this year.

Showcased at the Mobile World Congress event earlier this year, the OEM offering had been scheduled for a third quarter launch, but with whom was not known.

Now a Huawei spokesperson has confirmed the device will join the G1 in T-Mobile’s Android-based line-up: "I can confirm that Huawei will be releasing the third Google phone on T-Mobile this year".

The handset, said to be "low-cost", will boast a 5-megapixel camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack and Wi-Fi connectivity.

So far the T-Mobile G1 is the only Android phone available in the UK, although Vodafone and HTC are to offer the rival "Magic" from May.
