T-Orange. A New Network?

87235

Orange and T-Mobile are considering building an entirely new UK network following their merger next month, it has been claimed.

T-Mobile has discussed the feasibility of building a network from scratch with Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei in the UK.

Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom, parents of T-Mobile and Orange respectively, are considering purchasing new base stations to cover 900Mhz-26000Mhz bandwidths, enabling GSM, UMTS and LTE coverage.

New base station technology from infrastructure providers Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei use significantly less power than existing sites, and are also much cheaper to build.

T-Mobile was unavailable for comment. Orange said the joint venture will require engagement with infrastructure companies anyway, apparently dismissing the idea of a full re-build.

Android Grows 1100% Year-Over-Year

handset-share-by-category-550x335

Admob just put out another of their oh-so-interesting reports, this time around looking at year-over-year mobile internet traffic from three main categories: (1) feature phones, (2) smartphones, and (3) MIDs. Two things really struck me as amazing. First of all, MIDs enjoyed the largest (percentage) growth as a category, probably because of their limited use and emergence as a product category.

Nokia N8 phone to be announced next month?

nokia-n8-00-leak

It looks like we won’t have to wait long for the Nokia N8 (previously referred to as the Nokia N8-00) to become official as one of Engadget’s trusted sources has revealed that the Finnish company will make its announcement sometime in mid-April. There’s still no confirmation though if the leaked photos of a purported Nokia touchscreen phone that surfaced earlier this week are indeed that of the Nokia N8, but it certainly lines up nicely with this sequence of events. Needless to say, if this latest bit of news is true, then Eldar Murtazin’s prediction of a September release for the Nokia N8 and its new Symbian^3 platform might actually be pretty accurate as well.

INQ 3G Chat review

INQ 3G Chat review INQ have identified a gap in the market for a low-cost handset that focuses on core functionality without trying too hard to be a jack of all trades.  The INQ Chat 3G is the filler for that gap.

Accidentally dialling ‘999’ when a mobile phone is in your pocket is not what I had in mind when taking the Chat 3G for a spin but thankfully this little incident doesn’t detract from what has turned out to be an interesting addition to the world of social mobile.  More about that later though.

From the box through to the instruction cards and the phone itself, everything looks to be geared towards the youth market with it’s bright colours and comic/Manga imagery.  Whilst it’s never going to compete with touch screen smartphones in terms of sheer ability, underneath all the gloss is a capable device that comes pre-loaded with fully integrated social networking applications for the likes of Facebook, twitter, Skype and MSN Messenger.

My review unit came with a 3 PAYG SIM giving free Skype-to-Skype calls and Windows Live Messenger usage.

App store now accepting iPad submissions

apple-app-store-now-accepting-ipad-apps

Apple has just announced that they’re opening the doors to their App Store for iPad-optimized app submissions. Developers who wish to get their apps on the first batch of iPad units on April 3rd will have to get their works in by March 27th. Just to update you guys, the iPhone OS 3.2 SDK is now inbeta 5 form. This announcement may have very little to do with us non-developers who are just waiting to get our hands on the latest gadgets, but we certainly can help the developers out by letting them now which apps we would love to see optimized for the Apple iPad.

Editorial: is iPhone jailbreaking fostering piracy? Oh yes, it is!!!

You gotta be pretty naive to think that iPhone jailbreaking is not fostering privacy.
