App Store launching with 500 iPhone applications, 25% free

image Steve Jobs told USA Today that the Apple App Store will launch with "more than 500" applications Thursday night for the iPhone and iPod touch. Of these, 25% will be free and 90% will cost $9.99 or less. "This is the biggest launch of my career," said Jobs, adding, "When IBM introduced the PC, it was good, but it didn’t take off until people started discovering the software." It’s these apps then, that Steve says will "dramatically differentiates the iPhone" from Treos and BlackBerrys. Indeed, while consumers are focused on the launch of the iPhone 3G device, it’s the App Store which has analysts in such a tizzy.

image The Pentagon will issue hand-held lie detectors this month to U.S. Army soldiers in Afghanistan, pushing to the battlefront a century-old debate over the accuracy of the polygraph. The Defense Department says the portable device isn’t perfect, but is accurate enough to save American lives by screening local police officers, interpreters and allied forces for access to U.S. military bases, and by helping narrow the list of suspects after a roadside bombing.

O2 blames Apple for short supply of iPhone 3G

image O2 has blamed Apple for the "disappointing and frustrating experience" many would-be iPhone 3G owners had to put up with when the carrier began taking advance orders for the handset this week.

In an email said to have been sent to one consumer who complained about the near-collapse of O2’s ordering system, O2 Sales Director Steve Shurrock laid the blame at Apple’s door, specifically the Mac maker’s alleged inability to get sufficient stock in place to meet demand – despite O2’s requests for more.
