Apple has been rapped by authorities after it was ruled that an ad for the original iPhone breached regulations. A TV ad showed a user scrolling through various web pages before a voiceover said: "You never know which part of the internet you’ll need…Which is why all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone." However, two viewers said the claim was misleading because the iPhone does not support Flash or Java applications, both integral to many web pages, meaning some site sections or whole sites could therefore not be accessed.
This really is sad news, Smartphone and Pocket PC magazine has always been great read for Windows Mobile enthusiasts and is the only quality glossy printed magazine of its type. To make matters worse it is being replaced by iPhone Life magazine, talk about rubbing salt in the wound of Windows Mobile users. HTC Corp, a global leader in mobile phone innovation and design, today announced the introduction of the HTC S740, a slim, compact, and stylish smartphone that provides the perfect combination of a traditional 12-key phone design with HTC’s signature sliding QWERTY keyboard for optimal messaging. The HTC S740 will be available across Europe from September 2008. Pictures after the break.
According to msmobiles HTC are set to release a new Windows Mobile smartphone. It is the first Windows Mobile smartphone a without touch-screen made by HTC for a long time. It goes on sale next month (September 2008) in Europe. Looks like a nice device based on the Diamond theme, if you do not want a touch screen device but does lack a few features like autofocus, 3.5mm headest jack and only a QVGA screen. It’s not upon us yet however there is a good review of the device over at Smape. Pictures and facts galore. Is it worth reading? Very much so. There is an alarming moment when one discovers the lack of hardware 3D acceleration, horrible thoughts of Tytn II sluggishness spring to mind. the GUI looks nice and the hardware does seem to deliver the goods. Best of all it contains a comparison with the Touch Pro, even down to a table of specs. Check it out.
The guys over at crowdedbrain have managed to get a preview Nokia N96 to take a look at and they have posted a couple of videos showing the device in action. Will the N96 be a good enough upgrade to the N958 GB? At this stage they say not quite. As the DVB-H service is not available in the UK till 2009/2010, by the time this comes out the next model will be released, so the only real advantage is the 16GB of storage and the various design tweaks. The Cell Phone Junkie Show #117 has just been released. The Treo Pro officially announced, Skyfire is open for download and new firmware for the iPhone is released, just some of the subjects up for discussion this week. Full show notes after the break.
Samsung Singapore just made its first ROM update for the SGH-i900 Omnia Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional smartphone available which can now be downloaded from the web.
This self-service ROM update (no more service center returns) should include new functionalities like new widgets for Samsung’s custom Today screen and a brand-new Hanyu Pinyin text input method for typing in Chinese characters as well as several bug fixes. Other changes and enhancements are unknown yet because Samsung doesn’t published a detailed change-log.
