HTC P3600 Rom update with GPS

Good news for those of you that have an HTC P3600. As you will know, HTC shipped your devices with the GPS unit disabled. This was due to some initial problems with the GPS chipset not playing nice with the GPRS. However, HTC have now worked out the issues and have made a new ROM update available to you. Futhermore they are giving you the chance to test the GPS with a demo version of Tom Tom Navigator 6!

HTC P3600

Up until now, the only way to enable GPS on your P3600 was to use unofficial rom builds from other operators.

There are a few other enhancements in the new ROM:

03 April 2007,

O2 Ireland launches the XDA Orbit

O2 Ireland have launched the XDA Orbit.

    XDA Orbit

The Irish version of the XDA Orbit, which is based on the HTC Artemis, ships with CoPilot sat nav software, whereas the German version includes Tom Tom.

    Here’s the official press release:

O2 Ireland today announced the launch of the latest addition to its Xda range, the Xda Orbit. The new PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) is the first Xda in O2’s range to offer built-in GPS and seamless door-to-door satellite navigation, in an ultra slim, stylish portable device. Using the latest technology, the Xda Orbit also features a 2 Megapixel camera, MP3 player, radio and WiFi functionality, whilst combining the latest Windows Mobile® OS 5 software – offering mobile Internet and email in the same easy-to-use format as Microsoft® Office on a desktop.

Billy D’Arcy, Head of Business Sales & Services, O2 Ireland, said; “The new O2 Xda Orbit provides our customers with a truly mobile office that offers the latest product innovations, both in terms of satellite navigation and O2 Xda software. Our partnership with ALK Technologies to bundle the CoPilot® Live™ sat nav software is an important development for our customers and will give them the ultimate navigation experience directing them to their chosen destination quickly and safely. With its slim features and lightweight design, the O2 Xda Orbit is the perfect compact device for both business and leisure users, and adds to our already strong portfolio of Xda devices.”

CoPilot Live navigation software is supplied on an easy-to-install memory card that has complete maps of Ireland and the UK preloaded. Detailed routes are calculated in seconds and turn-by-turn directions are provided on-screen and spoken, all the way to the destination. There’s a choice of map views, including ‘non-distracting driver-safety’, ‘itinerary’, ‘where am I?’ and 3D ’bird’s eye’ view. If a turn is missed CoPilot recalculates the best new route in seconds. Users simply type in the chosen destination on the large 2.8 inch full colour TFT LCD touch screen and the O2 Xda Orbit will direct them to their chosen destination quickly and safely.

In addition advanced features enable real-time Internet tracking whereby users can let others view their location via the internet. Ideal for pedestrians as well as car travellers, the O2 Xda Orbit makes dedicated navigation systems unnecessary.

With its WiFi and GPRS features, the O2 Xda Orbit is ideal for users on the go; it provides seamless synchronisation with Pocket Outlook. Offering the ability to open, edit and send Microsoft Office Excel Mobile, Word Mobile and PowerPoint Mobile attachments quickly and easily, it is a true mobile office device. Users also benefit from secure and cost-effective real-time email delivery, with Microsoft’s Push email solution enabling them to work securely from any place at any time. Synchronisation of the Xda with a desktop computer also means both calendar and contacts are always completely up to date.

The Orbit combines a 2.0 Megapixel camera including video capability, FM radio (87.5Mhz–108.5Mhz) and MP3/AAC player, whilst enabling customers to view and play Windows Media Player 10 Mobile. It also offers quad-band functionality, supported by a battery life of up to 200 hours standby and 5 hours talk time. In addition the device features Bluetooth support allowing integration with car kits and hands-free headsets.

The Xda Orbit is available exclusively from O2, priced from €272 ex VAT.

    Orange SPV M700 windscreen mount

Since we posted our Orange SPV M700 review I purchased a few M700’s for work colleagues. All the devices came from business customer services and arrived at the same time. Strangely, some of them had a windscreen mount included in the box but others did not. The mount is pretty good, has a suction pad on one end and a flexible ‘arm’ to position the device where you want it.

    Orange SPV M700 Mount

Now when I asked Orange Business Customer Services why some had them and some didn’t they said that the mount is not supposed to be included, it’s not something that they advertise as being included and that we are lucky to have them at all!

So the question for all of you out there that already have an M700 is ‘Did you get a windscreen mount and car charger in the box with your device?’ I’m curious to know if more are shipping with or without. Let us know by leaving a comment below.

HTC Census appears on FCC site

A new HTC device, the Census, has just appeared on the FCC site.

    HTC Census

The unusual thing about this device is that it lacks voice capability and is a data only handset. Naturally not a great deal is known about the Census at this stage but you’ll notice from the image above that a fingerprint reader is included. With the lack of keyboard or keypad it obviously includes a touch screen.

    HTC Census Specification:

  • 416Mhz Intel Bulverde
  • 128Mb ROM, 64Mb RAM
  • Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC Phone Edition AKU 3.5
  • 3.5″ QVGA (240 x 320) TFT display
  • GSM9850, GSM1900
  • ED-VO, GPRS
  • Built in GPS
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • WiFi: 802.11b, 802.11g
  • 1.9MP Camera
  • 3000 mAh battery
  • SD Card slot
  • RJ11 Connector for phone(?)
  • 153 x 79 x 29mm
  • 350 grams
  • Don’t let the images above deceive you in to thinking that this is a small smartphone device – the screen alone is 3.5″ which puts the HTC Census in the same league as the older (circa HTC Blue Angel) handsets. Also look at the weight – 350g!?

No idea when (or IF) the device will see release but another thing you’ll notice, if you take the time to look at the manually on the FCC site, is that the screen shots all show Windows Mobile 5!

Oh and the Windows Mobile 6 Professional OS means that the 503G includes a touch screen.

    UBiQUiO 503G Specification

    Parrot PHOTO VIEWER 7″ review

The Parrot PHOTO VIEWER 7″ is the bigger brother of PHOTO VIEWER 3.5″ that we reviewed last year. We liked the 3.5″ version as its compact size meant that it could easily sit on one of the desks in our office and allow us to upload the photos from our mobile phones via bluetooth.

Since then we have been looking to buy a larger photo frame that we can have in our lounge so were keen to try the PHOTO VIEWER 7″.

The Parrot Photo Viewer is unique in that it uses Bluetooth technology rather than a USB cable or SD card in order to upload and display pictures. Parrot have aimed this product at people with camera phones, giving them the ability to transfer their favourite photos from their phone to display them on the photo frame. Since the launch of the PHOTO VIEWER 3.5″ Parrot have done some work with the firmware running on the PHOTO VIEWER 7″ and have improved the bluetooth connectivity. The 3.5″ version suffered some problems in this department, often requiring a power cycle to get things working again. The 7″ does not seem to suffer the same problems.

    Parrot PHOTO VIEWER 7"

At just 22.2 x 17.6cm the frame isn’t huge. It’s slim too measuring just 2 cm deep. However these dimensions include the frame, the LCD screen has an effective diagonal of just 7 inches and has a resolution of 720 x 480. This is a reasonable high resolution for an LCD of this size and therefore images look very sharp. The backlight is bright and evenly lit and can be adjusted to suit your needs. There is also a light sensor on the frame so that when the room is completely dark the frame goes in to a sleep mode where it simply displays the time. This is a nice idea if you are using the frame in a bedroom for example. You can turn this feature off though if you wish.

Available in 10 frame designs the frame can be used in either portrait or landscape and what’s more, the frame has a built in sensor that can tell which way is up and rotate the images on screen to suit; a pretty cool feature.

    Parrot Photo Frame Designs

The photo frame is powered by the supplied mains adapter. There is a switch that allows you to turn the unit on and off. One thing that is did find strange and somewhat annoying is that, having chosen a black surround for my photo frame, I’m still stuck with a white adapter and power cable!

    Parrot Power Cable

Uploading images via Bluetooth is dead easy. On my HTC TyTN I simply browse through the images I have saved and choose the one I want to send. Selecting beam file brings up a window where I can search for devices in range. Once the Parrot Photo Frame is shown on the list I click send and a few seconds later the picture is displayed on the screen.

    Parrot Bluetooth

Transferring files from a PC is equally simple but gives you the added benefit of being able to send more than one picture at a time.

The Parrot Photo Viewer will accept jpeg images in a variety of sizes and will automatically scale them to fit the screen. That said, it is a good idea to resize large images on the PC before you transfer them to save space as the frame has only 128MB of Flash RAM available for images. 128MB Should be plenty of room for hundreds of images, however you can’t necessarily fill this all up as even if you are below the memory limit the frame will not accept more than about 500 images. This should be ample for most people though!

The photo frame has a built in menu system that allows you to change various settings, review and delete stored images alter the backlight brightness, etc. The on screen display is really intuitive and is accessed by three buttons on the rear of the frame. You can also alter how frequently the images are changed from 5 seconds up to a few hours. The one thing that we thought was missing from the slide options on the 3.5″ model has now been added to the 7″ so that you can now display your images randomly.

    Photo Viewer Rear Buttons

The Parrot Photo Viewer is mains powered and comes with a slim power adapter. I would like to see a battery power option for this as it really is the ideal size for passing round to show people your photos. When most people see it for the first time they immediately want to pick it up.

The box for the Parrot Photo Viewer is also impressive and is ideal for anyone purchasing it as a gift for someone.

    Parrot Photo Viewer Box

    High-quality display
Featuring a high-resolution LCD screen with 720 x 480 pixels and 262 144 colours, the Parrot PHOTO VIEWER 7″ benefits from the TFT technology to guarantee you the highest level of rendering in terms of colours and sharp details.
It comes on during the day and switches off at night
An LCD screen gives off light, which can be a pain if you want to put it on your bedside table. The Parrot PHOTO VIEWER 7″ features a sensor that switches off the frame when the light level drops.

    Technical and commercial specifications

Parrot PHOTO VIEWER Bluetooth® wireless photo viewer

    • High-resolution LCD TFT screen with 720 x 480 pixels
    • 262 144 colour display
    • Effective LCD size: 7 inches

    • Bluetooth profiles supported: FTP, OPP and BIP
    • Receives pictures from up to 10 metres away
    • Pairing: not required with this product
    • Software updates by Bluetooth

    Dimensions and Weight

    • Width: 22.2 cm Height: 17.6 cm Depth: 2 cm
    • Weight: 358 g (not incl. frame)

    Processor

    • Samsung 2412 Microprocessor
    • Memory : Flash = 512Mbits – SDRAM = 128Mbits

    Conclusion
I like this Parrot PHOTO VIEWER 7″ we have it sitting in our lounge at the moment. The images are very sharp and clear and colours appear very rich. The firmware is a great improvement over the old 3.5″ version. If you are looking for a digital photo frame then consider this one!

Sim Unlock Orange SPV M700/HTC Trinity

I while ago I used IMEI Check to have my Orange M3100 Sim Unlocked so that Tracy could use it with her T-Mobile SIM.

Since I posted my Orange SPV M700 review about a week ago I’ve had a few emails asking if it’s possible to Sim Unlock the M700 so that it can be used on other networks. The simple answer is YES!

Florin at IMEI Check has come up trumps again and is now able to provide SIM unlocking for the HTC Trinity and Orange M700 (Although I did think the HTC Branded devices were unclocked anyway!?). The service costs £20.

I really do recommend IMEI Check, the service is really fast and efficient. Have a look on their website to see what they have to offer.

    JAVOscreen iPod screen protector review

Big thanks to Chris for this JAVOedge JAVOscreen review.

Once again, having only recently purchased a 2nd generation iPod Nano I was anxious to keep it looking pristine.

    JAVOScreen

I was very impressed with how easy it was to fit the protectors. They are nice and thick making it easy to apply them without getting troublesome air bubbles. It also means you can remove them for cleaning, something you can’t do with thinner screen guards. A cloth is provided so that you can clean the screen before applying. One of the cool features of the protectors is that they are anti-reflective making it easier to see your iPod screen in daylight. Although the protector is thick it does not blur the screen. The pack also comes with a protector for the clickwheel.

    Key Features

  • Keeps screen clean and protected
  • Anti-reflective
  • Scratch proof
  • Dust repellent and washable
  • Re-positionable
  • Durable
  • Overall: I am very impressed and feel confident the JAVOscreen will protect my iPod screen and clickwheel from being scratched.

You can buy the JAVOscreen screen protectors from http://www.javoedge.com/reflexeshop/productCatalog/getProduct.do?poid=1012&pbmId=5606.
