Largest-ever iPAQ expansion announced

HP’s decision to name anything they sell that isn’t a desktop. laptop or printer as an iPaq may be a little confusing already, but thats not stopping them officially annoucing another selection of devices.

This one caught my eye. QWERTY keyboard, scroll wheel, HSDPA, 3mp autofocus camera, fast 520 MHz processor, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi and, AGPS (Assisted GPS for faster GPS fix)! Quite a spec sheet eh, and I’ll be sticking my name on the list to review this as soon as we get a review kit!

Thats not the end of the story though, because HP have also annouced a huge expansion program for the iPaq brand. Heres a brief round up of what we’ve learnt today, and what we’ve got to look forward to:

    Removing the TyTN battery cover

Just a quick video here for you as I’ve had quite a few emails today from people struggling to get the back cover off their new HTC TyTN II. You need to remove the cover in order to insert the battery.

Getting the back of the TyTN II

It does feel like you are pushing the cover too hard when you first do it, it’s pretty stiff.

EDIT: You can see our TyTN II review HERE.

HTC TyTN II first retail unbox!

We strive to bring you the most up to date information about devices and have managed to get our hands on a retail boxed version of the new HTC TyTN II. This could very well be the first unboxing video of the final retail unit!

    HTC TyTN II box

    HTC TyTN II box

Overall the final version looks and feels a lot more sturdy and refined than some of the early demo units we’ve seen and I’m pleased to say that TomTom 6 is included, although this is a ‘Taster’ version whereby you can only download one city map for free. Naturally we’ll have more on the TyTN II as we use it.

    Enjoy the video!

Note that in the video I mention the memory card as being miniSD. It is in fact microSD, sorry for the goof!

No WM6 upgrade for Samsung i600 in the UK?

If like me, you are a Samsung i600 owner, chances are you have been keeping an eye on the Samsung website for your free Windows Mobile 6 ROM upgrade.

You’ll probably know that the ROM upgrades are being released one country/region at a time (starting with the Russian and Dutch ROMS) any futher updates have been released over the past few weeks. We’ve been eagerly awaiting the update for the UK.

Well there could be bad news there. If you were to take a look at the Samsung i600 update page today you’ll find that some country flags have been removed! Now missing from the list are UK, Germany, Greece and Czech.

i600 ROM download before and after

i600 ROM download site before and after

So does this mean no update for us?? Well I spoke to our PR contact at Samsung and have been told that these countries will “Definitely receive a Windows Mobile 6 update” and that the download site is just undergoing a few “Changes”. Fingers crossed then!

For those of you that simply cant wait until the official ROM version there is a work around which involves changing your locale, performing the update and then changing the locale back. You find a full how-to guide here.

HTC release WM6 upgrades for X7500 and S620

Great news for owners of the HTC X7500 (HTC Advantage) or the HTC S620 (HTC Excalibur) – HTC have just released official Windows Mobile 6 ROM upgrades for both of these devices.

    S620/X7500 WM6 Upgrades

    S620/X7500 WM6 Upgrades

As with other upgrades offered by HTC you can download for free from the HTC e-Club site but, if you have not done so already, you’ll have to register for an account using the serial number of your device.

Don’t forget to backup your important data though as the update will wipe everything from your device.

    Samsung Q1 Ultra unboxed

Along with the OQO Model 01 we reviewed earlier this year, we also had a look at the Samsung Q1. The Q1 was one of the first true UMPC devices to be released, it was an interesting product but was not without its problems, the main one being the input method which used on-screen dial keys which, coupled with the relatively low-resolution display, made the Q1 cumbersome to use.

Samsung have addressed these issues and recently released the new Samsung Q1 Ultra. This has a similar look to the original Q1 but includes a QWERTY keypad and a higher resolution, 1024 x 600 display.

As always, we are starting off with a video unbox of the machine.

    Samsung Q1 Ultra unboxed

One point to note however is that the SIM Card socket on this UK model is innoperative. Perhaps it will be anabled with a ROM/Software update in the future?

    Samsung Q1 Ultra specification:

  • Intel®Processor Technology A110 (800MHz)
  • Windows Vista™ Home Premium
  • DDRII 400MHz (1GB)
  • 60GB Hard Drive
  • Stylus
  • 7″ WSVGA (1024×600) TFT Display
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • Wifi: 802.11b/g
  • VGA/Ethernet adapter
  • Battery Capacity: 4000mAh (standard) & 8000mAh (extended)
  • 227.5mm x 23.9mm x 123.9mm
  • 690 Grams

Sandisk first to release 8GB M2 cards

SanDisk Corporation today announced that it is shipping 8-gigabyte Memory Stick Micro (M2) flash memory cards to phone manufacturers and mobile network operators for testing and evaluation purposes. Primarily used in Sony Ericsson mobile phones, the 8GB SanDisk M2 cards are ideal for the growing number of consumers who make their mobile phone—with its built-in music player, digital camera and video player/recorder—the centerpiece of their digital lifestyle.

At 8GB, SanDisk offers the largest capacity M2 card in the world. The new card will allow consumers to listen to more than 2,000 digital songs, or store more than 5,000 high-resolution pictures, or up to 5 hours of high-quality MPEG 4 videos. The announcement was made at IFA, the world’s largest consumer electronics show, where SanDisk is exhibiting at Booth 130, in Hall 15.1 of Messe Berlin, through Sept.

“With the addition of an 8GB SanDisk M2 card, consumers will instantly have the same amount of storage as the largest capacity iPhone,” said Jeff Kost, senior vice president and general manager of the Mobile Consumer Solutions division at SanDisk. “Furthermore, removable cards make it easy to share content you create with friends, ‘sideload’ content and files from a computer and have virtually unlimited storage by simply purchasing more cards. SanDisk is enabling people to get more out of their phones than ever before.”

Retail release of the cards and availability to phone manufacturers and network operators is planned for Q4 2007. Pricing has not yet been determined.

In addition to its Memory Stick Micro M2 cards, SanDisk also offers a broad range of both embedded and removable storage solutions for mobile handset manufacturers and mobile network operators. These include iNAND and mDOC embedded flash drives and microSD, microSDHC, miniSD and MegaSIM cards.
