Advent Vega gets honeycomb 3.2

advent-vega_feature_0ff975fc-7766-4e23-96ef-c53fa4979bb3Though the Advent Vega ships with a version of Android better suited for mid-range handsets than a decent tablet, for its price you really can’t complain. After Honeycomb was first ported to the budget dual-core tablet back in the Spring, the latest release of the OS has been shoehorned onto the slate, complete with native GPU acceleration. There are still some bugs in this unofficial Android 3.2 build, as should be expected, but weighing your options that seems better than nothing. You can check out the ROM and instructions at the the Tablet Roms site. There is a video demo after the break.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro unboxing video

Mini_pro_Black When Sony Ericsson released their X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro handsets last year they were met with fairly mixed reception. Initially there was a lot of interest the two little devices but as they shipped with Android 1.6 and it became more apparent that updates to later versions of the OS were less and less likely their popularity was somewhat short-lived.

I think it fair to say that Sony Ericsson have learned from the mistakes made with the X10’s.

So now we have the Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro to look at. Originally known as the X10 Mini Pro 2, SE have now dropped X10 from the name. The specification has been updated quite drastically and although the overall size and form is virtually the same they’ve managed to shoehorn in 1 GHz CPU, plenty of RAM, 5MP camera and HVGA LED back-lit display.

Performance is impressive. Check out the unboxing below and see the benchmarks for yourself!

Another BlackBerry Press Event

Screen Shot 2011-08-19 at 09.20.55

Next Tuesday, 23rd August sees yet another BlackBerry press event being held in Central London. What we will see at the event if unknown although if you are a BlackBerry fan you can probably have a guess as we have seen numerous leaked pictures of more BlackBerry 7 handsets. Then again, it could be something unexpected.

We will be at the event so unless we are given an embargo you can expect some news and hopefully video footage later that day.

Roll on Tuesday.

HP discontinues webOS devices!

hp-logo

HP have today announced they will no longer be developing webOS devices, such as the Pre and the TouchPad.

The press release said they would be "discontinuing operations for webOS devices”. This means they will continue to develop webOS as an operating system but will not manufacture hardware.

So, does this mean we will see webOS licensed and appearing on handsets from some of our favorite manufactures such as HTC, Samsung and LG? I do hope so. Since the release of the Palm Pre we here tracyandmatt have all said that the OS was great but sadly let down by hardware.

This news is a real shame but not one that is a total surprise.

BlackBerry helping the UK Police fight crime on our streets

police-blackberry-access-records-0

With the recent riots taking place across the UK, Research in Motion have been getting some pretty negative press due to rioters using BlackBerry Messenger as one form of communication. With the BlackBerry being so popular these days of course BBM will be used, but it will not have been the only form of communication for these thugs. If the BlackBerry didn’t have such a huge market share in the UK then other applications would have got the publicity.

But this article isn’t about that. What interests me is that although the Police are getting stick from members of the press, it is the Police themselves that are using the BlackBerry solution to make policing the streets more efficient.

Several UK Police Forces now use the BlackBerry solution routinely and others are currently trialing it.

As you can see below it is not only specific Police applications that are in use by our Police. They too are jumping on the social networking band wagon.

ZTE Tureis Review

ZTE Tureis ReviewNot released yet to the public of the United Kingdom, the ZTE Tureis is the first phone from the Chinese manufacturer that sports a front facing QWERTY keyboard. Running Android 2.2 with a 800 MHz Qualcomm processor, a 3.2 MP camera and a 2.6″ 320 x 240 screen makes the budget handset look appealing for anyone who misses the Blackberry form factor but likes Android.

ZTE has been famed before for making great budget handsets which sell by the millions but is the Tureis a worthy addition to the company’s line of phones? Does the form factor work well enough with Android or is it dead on arrival? Well, read on to find out!
