02 Germany Announce XDA Glide

O2 Germany announced their latest XDA handset yesterday named the XDA Glide. Looking very much like the very popular XDA Orbit 2 and modelled on what looks like the HTC Touch 3G which we be reviewing early next week, we believe that this is the new HTC Cruise 09 that we’ve been hearing about.

XDA Glide 01

The Windows Mobile 6.1 powered device comes with GPS, TomTom Navigator 7, Car Kit and a Mount holder which suggests (even to me) that this is primarily a SatNav phone just like the XDA Orbit 2.

XDA Glide 02 XDA Glide 03 XDA Glide 04 XDA Glide 05

Specifications wise we can expect it to have:

  • 528 Mhz Qualcomm MSM 7225 processor
  • 256 MB Ram
  • 512 MB Rom
  • MicroSD Slot
  • TouchFlo (2d we think)
  • 2.8 inch QVGA Screen
  • HSPDA
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • A2DP
  • Opera Mobile 9.5 browser

Among the most interesting features of the new O2 XDA Guide there is the footprint function and the dedicated footprint button. The footprint feature lets you send pictures taken with the built-in 3.2 megapixel snapper along with positioning data. On a compatible device, the pictures can be used for navigation and whoever received them will be able to navigate to the photographed location by a single click.

The O2 XDA Guide is about to start shipping by mid-February 2009, price tag still unknown.

State of Palm OS Software Sales Analyzed

1229703695.gifTamsPalm has posted an article linking to a couple of interesting stories over at the CreativeAlgorithms company blog. Justine Pratt, from one of the oldest Palm OS software houses still operating, talks about the possible reasons why Palm OS software sales have plummeted in 2008. Justine says that Palm OS sales dropped below sustainable levels at the end of 2007. The sales dropped even below levels in which support is justified, and some developers responded by offering existing titles for free with no support.

T-Mobile G2 rumours begin to surface

t-mobile-g2 It might be too good to be true, but in fact, the G1 might already be an old deal for T-Mobile, HTC, and Google, therefore, the companies started working on the G2. Only specifications are available, and a mock-up shot. Rumours are said to be “not-confirmed”, so we cannot actually qualify this as a strong possibility. The G2 is said to be in a touch screen-only form factor, and like many competitors, has four buttons. The trackball is going to stay. A 5 megapixel camera will be the upgrade to the current 3.2, while an additional VGA camera will be included, for 3G video calls.

Open Handset Alliance Getting Bigger By The Day

The Open Handset Alliance, which is headed by Google and which develops Android handset platform, on Wednesday announced that fourteen additional companies have joined the association with the aim to assist in further development of the Android, build new devices powered by the operating system or enable infrastructure. By joining the alliance, many new members directly or indirectly confirm launches of Android-based handsets.

The new members of the Open Handset Alliance are: AKM Semiconductor, ARM, Asustek Computer, Atheros Communications, Borqs, Ericsson, Garmin International, Huawei Technologies, Omron Software, Softbank Mobile Corp., Sony Ericsson, Teleca AB, Toshiba Corp. and Vodafone.

“Sony Ericsson is excited to announce its membership of the Open Handset Alliance and confirm its intention to develop a handset based on the Android platform We believe Sony Ericsson can bring a wealth of experience in making consumer focused multimedia handsets with new user experience to the Alliance drawing on the successes of the Walkman and Cyber-shot sub-brands,” said Rikko Sakaguchi, corporate vice president and head of creation and development at Sony Ericsson.

New members will either deploy compatible Android devices, contribute significant code to the Android Open Source Project, or support the ecosystem through products and services that will accelerate the availability of Android-based devices. With these commitments, the Open Handset Alliance will continue to drive greater and faster innovation for the benefit of mobile users and everyone in the industry.

“Asus is a leading handset manufacturer that will soon deliver high quality, innovative Android devices and technology for world class carriers and consumers,” said HC Hung, general manager of personal mobile devices business unit at Asustek Computer.

Open Handset Alliance members’ continued contributions to Android promises to give everyone in the mobile ecosystem a free and complete mobile platform to build Android devices. The new members are expected to add to the momentum of Android device availability, providing developers with a greater opportunity to deploy compelling applications that will reach a global audience. As a result, consumers around the world should benefit from a better mobile experience that features less expensive devices, more compelling services, rich Internet applications, and easier-to-use interfaces.

“Joining the Open Handset Alliance today is a logical step in our mobile internet journey. Working with emerging terminal platforms for smartphones is critical for us to deliver unbeatable customer experiences and accelerate time to market for innovative products and services,” claimed Frank H Rovekamp, global chief marketing officer at Vodafone Group.

This can only mean great good things for Android and Mobile fans alike and I personally look forward to seeing what’s next for this group. Have a look at their site and see just how many people are involved with this project (you’ll be amazed).
