Samsung Galaxy Beam unboxing and demo video

samsung-galaxy-beam-2012 Remember the Pico Pocket projector that we reviewed a few years ago? Well what happens when one of those mates with a mobile phone? You get offspring that look like the Samsung Galaxy Beam of course!

We never got to play with the original Beam announce a in 2010 (the i8520) and to be honest I don’t even know if that made it to market in the end, maybe it was a little too soon but this new model Galaxy Beam (i8530) is on sale now and you can pick it up from the chaps at Clove Technology.

The Beam has quite a decent specification even without the projector; rocking 768MB RAM, Dual Core 1GHz CPU and 5MP camera. It may not be top of the range but add in the DLP projector and we’re looking at a whole new proposition.

The nHD projector (where the hell did nHD come from?!) is 15 lumens and 640×360 pixels. It doesn’t sound too bright and really it isn’t but get a reasonably dark room and the little LED powered projector does a half decent job. How practical that is within real world environments is perhaps questionable. I’m not sure that rocking up to a meeting with this little device in tow and asking for the lights to be turned off and the blinds closed would really cut it nor can I see it working so well with your mates in the pub.

One disappointment is in the OS department, the Beam ships with Gingerbread 2.3.6 which I hope would see an upgrade in the very near future.

Anyway, check out the unboxing a demo video below and see for yourself.

Lenovo ThinkVision USB monitor unboxing video

lenovo-thinkvision-lt1421-14-usb-powered-169-8ms-led Are you someone that’s always on the go with your laptop or someone that has to do presentations for a small group of people? Them perhaps the Lenovo ThinkVision monitor is worth a look.

Lenovo have come up with a monitor that not only connects to your PC to get its display but is also is totally USB powered, so in terms of portability you only have to carry the screen and no other power adapters etc.

You may think that a portable USB monitor would have limited spec but in fact the ThinkVision is a 14″ display with 8ms refresh rate and 1366×768 pixels. Great for laptop power users that simply must have two displays.

Less than one inch thick (2.1cm) and at 839g the LT-1421 will slip into your laptop bag without weighing you down. The 14.1 inch LCD screen is very bright (adjust using the rocker) with 200mi, and has a good screen resolution (1366 x 768 pixels) so it will nicely match your laptop screen. It’s got a matte display so the viewing angles are very good even at over 45 degrees and has a simple but sturdy fold out arm to prop it up and change the tilt. To stop your screen getting scratched or damaged it comes with a case, like the Lenovo ThinkPad laptop lid, which does add weight but retains the quality build and sleek Lenovo satin black finish, but the cover also doubles as a stand! The Y cable has two USB ports but you’ll most likely only need to use one, the second port is in case your notebook is not powerful enough to deliver juice to the ThinkVision monitor.

Check out the unbox below for a little more detail or head over to eXpansys to order one now!

Nikon D3200 unboxing video

intro-001 A little over a year ago I got my hands on the Nikon D3100 to review. Up until then I had been very much a Canon fan having had a Canon 350D, 450D, 40D and then a 50D. I never really had much interest in Nikon.

The D3100 though, was something of a turning point for me. Having it in for review ‘forced’ me to take a proper look. Although I didn’t dispense with my Canon gear the D3100 really impressed me as being a simple to use and light-weight digital SLR and it became a camera that I would carry for casual photography, anything more serious I would stick to the Canon 50D and the plethora of Canon lenses I have.

One nice thing about the D3100 was the ability to record HD video (720P) and to have a degree of auto focus whilst in record mode. This is something that the new Nikon D3200 extends being capable of 1080P video recording and improved autofocus.

The D3200 looks almost identical to the D3100 that is replaces but there are lots of feature changes, not least in the sensor department as this has now been increased to an impressive 24.2 megapixels. Amazing for an entry-level DSLR!

If you want to see a little more of the D3200 check out the unboxing video below.

Huawei Ascend P1 unboxing video

Huawei Ascend P1 Until fairly recently the Huawei name was relatively unknown yet they have quickly managed to establish themselves as the smartphone manufacturer that makes some of the best value and entry-level models on the market. You’d never call them a luxury brand.

Perhaps with the launch of the Ascend P1 Huawei are looking to change things a little though as this latest launch from them combines some high-end specs with an attractive, slim design.

It features a 1.5GHz dual core processor and a stunning 4.3 Super AMOLED screen. With an 8 mega-pixel camera and high quality 5.1 Dolby sound also included. This high specification has been enclosed within an elegant slim design, which has been created for ease of use, as much as looks. It has a comfortable width of 64.8mm, making it easy to be held within in your hand.

The latest version of Android, 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) has been included. This means that you have the most up-to-date features of the Android platform, and benefit from a smooth and interactive user experience. Huawei has added a stunning 3D user interface to the Ascend P1 making it easier to navigate between applications. It also shows off the power of the 1.5GHz dual-core processor.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 unboxing video

samsung-galaxy-note-101-n8000 With screen sizes ranging from 5 inches through to 10.1 inches Samsung, thanks to it’s Note and Tab range, seem to have a tablet size to suite everyone.

This week Samsung sent me over their new 10.1″ Note to have a look at. Unlike the Tab range, the note come with a stylus-like S-PEN allowing handwriting and drawing on screen.

The specification looks decent overall. a 1.4GHz quad core CPU and Mail GPU coupled with 2GB RAM and either 16, 32 or 64GB of internal storage. The screen res is also pretty decent at 1280 x 800 pixels which may be far less than the iPad, with the same size screen, but is high enough for 720p video playback.

Check out the video below to see more.

BlackBerry Music Gateway Unboxing Video

BBMusic_Gateway_02-e1338877766306

If you use a BlackBerry 7 and love your music device the Music Gateway may well be your perfect accessory. We first saw the device at BlackBerry World back in May of this year but the gadget is now on sale in North America and I presume the UK launch will happen at any time as RIM sent me one.

Essentially you connect the BlackBerry Music Gateway to your sound system and then pair your BlackBerry smartphone with it via NFC. Your BlackBerry then acts as a remote control and streams your music from your phone – simple.

  • Connections Made Simple – Using NFC, simply tap your NFC enabled BlackBerry to connect to the BlackBerry Music Gateway, or connect via standard Bluetooth for universal connectivity of any Bluetooth enabled device such as smartphones, tablets and computers

  • Enjoy Wireless Freedom – Stream music from your BlackBerry smartphone, BlackBerry PlayBook, or any other Bluetooth enabled device. BlackBerry Music Gateway connects to any existing home stereo equipment or car stereo using the RCA or 3.5mm cables included in the box

  • Wireless Remote Control – Use your device as the remote for complete control of playback, track changes, and volume.

  • Multitasking – Access other applications or surf the web while playing music. Music automatically pauses when an incoming phone call is received and continues when the call is ended without skipping a beat.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs HTC One X (video)

samsung-galaxy-s-iii-vs-htc-one-x-640x480 It’s not the first time that anyone has compared these two flagship devices, nor shall it be the last, of that I am sure. However, despite the fact that these two superphones have been on the market for a little while now it still remains one of the questions that’s asked of us most often; ‘Which is better, the Galaxy S3 or the HTC One X?’.

The answer isn’t straight forward and opinion is very much divided. As per my tweet a few days ago, I’m going to be using the Glalaxy S3 and the One X for the next month and I’m going to decide which one I like best and why.

So for the sake of a recap and to compare the two side-by-side as well as doing a benchmark please have a look at the HTC One X vs. Samsung Galaxy S3 video below.

olloclip iPhone 4 & 4S lens system unboxing

olloclip There are a few companies out there that have started making clip-on lens systems for the iPhone 4/4S and I’ve personally tried out a couple of the cheap (sub £10) options out there. To be honest, they weren’t much good, the worst one didn’t work at all really!

The folks over at eXpansys sent me over the Olloclip quick-connect to have a look at. The nice thing about the Olloclip solution is that it’s a full 3-in-1 lens system providing wide angle, fish eye and macro facilities within one neat package that simple slides on over the corner of the iPhone 4/4S. The soft plastic gives enough to ensure that there is no risk of scratching the phone whilst providing a reassuringly tight fit.

This system may not be the cheapest but it works really well and the lens optics are excellent.

Compatible with the iPhone 4 and 4S, the Olloclip is an attachable, high quality 3-in-1 lens for your iPhones camera. Just slide it onto the corner of your iPhone with your choice of lens and you’re ready to start snapping better quality images.

It features a macro, fish eye and wide angle lens that create sometimes stunning and sometimes hilarious pictures. The wide angle lens broadens your iPhones frustratingly narrow view (expands native viewing angle by 2x). The macro lens (focal distance of 13mm/.5″ providing 10x macro shots) will capture tiny details up close. For the sk8rs and hipsters, the fish eye lens gives a 180 degree view which offers a quirky perspective of your subject.

The Olloclip is indifferent to shooting video or using apps (Face Time, Instagram, Hipstamatic), is smaller than a car key and is made from light-weight aircraft grade aluminium so it won’t weigh down your pocket. It comes with a nifty carry case that doubles as a cleaning cloth, making it a great gift or toy for anyone.

Check out the quick video below.
