Windows Phone announces the arrival of Instagram

instagram-profiles-now-online-1The arrival of Instagram, which has more than 150 million users around the world, brings one of the world’s most popular social photo apps to what many critics have called the world’s best smartphone cameras.

Instagram can transform everyday moments into shareable works of art. Just grab a picture from your Photos Hub, choose a filter to transform its look and feel, then post to Instagram (or Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Foursquare). As with many other Windows Phone apps, Instagram for Windows Phone will have a Live Tile which updates with data on the Start screen as well as support for fast-resume.

With up to 500 apps added each day, the Windows Phone store has more than 190,000 apps and around 90 per cent of the top 20 ranked apps across all platforms. Windows Phone is also the fastest-growing platform among the leading operating systems according to recent analyst data.

Instagram for Windows Phone highlights include:

  • The full set of Instagram filters including XPro-II, Earlybird, Rise, Amaro, Hudson, Lo-fi, Sutro, Toaster, Brannan, Inkwell, Walden, Hefe, Nashville, 1977, and more
  • Ability to like and comment on other people’s photos and videos
  • Linear and radial tilt-shift blur effects for extra depth of field
  • Unlimited uploads

Instagram leads a wave of popular apps now available on Windows Phone, including Blippar, Vine, 4oD, Angry Birds Star Wars II and Asphalt 8: Airborne.

Google Chromecast demo video

chromecastSeveral weeks ago, Gareth was one of the lucky few to be able to order a Chromecast from Amazon.com and have it delivered to the UK.

We then brought you a video of the install and setup of the Chromecast but Gareth encountered a series of problems when trying to use the Chromecast with both his tablet and his phone and was unable to get it fully working.

So this time we’re bringing you an updated video of the Chromecast in action now that we’ve been able to iron out the issues and in the video below you’ll see Gareth demo some of the features and run through a demo.

Samsung 46″ F7000 Series 7 review (UE46F7000ST)

Samsung 46" F7000 Series 7This month I started my Samsung 46″ F7000 Series 7 review. It has been a while since we last had a TV here to review in the office and a lot has changed since then. Prices have plummeted while screen sizes have increased and the thickness of display panels has dramatically reduced.

Much of this is thanks to LED back lighting technology and no one seems to be using this technology quite as much as Samsung and their range of LED HD TV’s is huge.

The Samsung F8000 is the top end of the Samsung range and has a price tag to match. However, many of the top-end features from the F8000 range can now be found on the 2013 F7000 models. Features such as build-in camera, voice and motion control, micro dimming and a touchpad controller are all added to the F7000 range yet it’s still able to come in at several hundred pounds cheaper than the F8000’s

We are looking at the 46″ version but the range offers sizes from 40 to 60 inches and, at the moment, the 46″ can be found on Amazon for just under £1100.

You do get a lot of hardware for your money there too. This smart TV comes with built in WiFi, integrated webcam, motion and voice control features, 2 bundled 3D glasses and two remote control units.

HTC Desire 500 unboxing video

htc-desire-500-black-en-f01-01 About three weeks ago HTC announced their latest device to have the Desire name attached to it; the HTC Desire 500.

The Desire 500 bring the Desire range up to date with the user interface, HTC Sense 5.0, and features taken straight from the newer flagship models and rolling them in to a much more modestly priced device.

The specification isn’t bad either, a Quad Core 1.2GHz CPU and 1GB RAM, 8MP camera and 1.6MP front-facing camera. There’s even a dual-SIM version available too.

The 500 comes in Lacquer Black and Glacier Blue variants.

Check out the unboxing video below where you can see the Desire 500 in a little more detail and also see the benchmark results.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 unboxing video

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Last week I had my first meeting with the Lenovo as a member of the LNVO INSDRS program. As I blogged earlier, this was an opportunity for me to meet with fellow INSDRS and to get some hands on time with some interesting Lenovo products. Over the coming months I’ll be getting the opportunity to unbox and review many of the Lenovo products and I’m starting here this week with the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13.

The Yoga 13 was released late last year and is a laptop/tablet hybrid Ultrabook. Upon initial inspection the Yoga 13 looks just like any other laptop/Ultrabook. Sure it’s slim and light and has a discrete and attractive appearance but it’s not until you bend the hinged screen back past 180 degrees that you realise that this is something a bit different.

Folding the screen past the 180 degree mark feels so unnatural at first, years of laptop use just tells you that it’s so wrong! However, taking it past that point and all the way around to the 360 degree point reveals the Yoga 13 in it’s tablet format for large, 13.3 inch, touchscreen computing.

One neat thing about the IdeaPad Yoga 13 is that the screen can be positioned in several ways, from conventional laptop style to tablet and tent and stand modes in between. There’s good flexibility there and flipping the screen past the 180 degree point disables the keyboard and trackpad and puts you firmly in touchscreen mode.

In terms of specification there’s a range to choose from with Intel i3, i5 and i7 models, 4 or 8GB of RAM and 128 or 256GB SSD drives. All have a 13.3″ 1600×900 touchscreen display and weigh in at just 1.54kg.

We’ll have a more detailed review soon, once I have had time to use the Yoga 13 more extensively. This will be the first Windows PC that I have owned in quite some time so it may take a little getting used to! In the mean time we have the obligatory unboxing video for  you below.
