I was lucky enough to my hands on the BlackBerry PlayBook for the first time yesterday. Gareth did a demo video at Mobile World Congress but I have been waiting patiently for this great day. To say I was looking forward to it would be an understatement!
So was I impressed? I sure was. Being an iPad user it was definitely strange using a 7 inch tablet but you soon get accustomed. The device I used was not final ROM so we can more than likely see some slight tweaks before the PlayBook goes on sale.
The big question is when will that be. I’m afraid nobody knows for sure. It is imminent but I’m sure it will launch in North America and Canada before other parts of the world.
Check out the video below and feel free to comment on our forum.
Announced at Mobile World congress last month the HTC Incredible S has launched running Android 2.2 but with a promised upgrade to 2.3 coming very soon. The device looks great in black and with it sporting a 4-inch WVGA Super LCD display it is somewhat easier to handle in my opinion than the 4.3 inch Desire HD.
Spec wise the HTC Incredible S does not bring us anything new and amazing that we have not seen on other devices but with the specs it has, bundled with great build quality and HTC’s Sense UI it sure looks to be a big seller.
You can see the unboxing video below along with the Incredible S’s full spec.
Oh, and ignore the part in the video when I say it has a 4.3 inch screen. I got over excited and my mind played tricks on me!
Three have announced today the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Pro on their network. The Android 2.2 device is another front facing QWERTY design that we have seen more recently from the likes of Motorola with the Droid Pro.
In the video below you can see the Galaxy Pro in the hands of a Three spokesperson. Focus is very much on the social hub feature which integrates your social networking apps. A great feature that I have used on other platforms.
I don’t have the full specs for this one but when we do we will let you have them.
Check out the funky video below.
Earlier on this week we announced that Pocket Cinema was available for download to the BlackBerry Torch and I promised to do a short video demonstrating it. I’m a man of my word so here it is.
The application seems to work flawlessly. As you will see, navigating around the app is a breeze. Prices vary depending on the movie but all in all I think this is pretty good value for money. Perfect for taking on an aeroplane for example.
Check out the demo video below:
Earlier this week I managed to get hands on with the Motorola ATRIX here in London. The ATRIX is touted by Motorola as being ‘the worlds fastest Smartphone’. Is it? I don’t know but what I can tell you is that is pretty nippy. Where the ATRIX really excels is when its webtop application is running. This can be one of two ways. Either by docking the ATRIX with a TV and using a wireless mouse and keyboard, or when docked with the laptop accessory that can be purchased. Both are fantastic and as you will see in the video below I was super impressed. I cant think of another phone that currently offers the same experience and Motorola have clearly worked hard to achieve this new option that will be a huge selling tool for them.
See what you think after the break:
The Motorola XOOM was announced in January at CES and also got pricing this week here in the UK. Motorola kindly invited me to pop into their offices the other day to get hands on with the XOOM and what a nice experience it was too. Rather than me mess about with it on video I decided to let an expert give me a demo.
My early impressions of the XOOM are very positive. Honeycomb on a tablet is truly awesome and I kind of fell in love with the new interactive widgets.
Check out our fantastic video below.
Not so long ago digital SLR cameras cost upward of a thousand pounds and were really only the domain of professionals and serious amateurs. More recently the DSLR market has opened up somewhat with entry level models costing hundreds rather than thousands of pounds.
Just the other day blog.IAMNikon.com sent us the new Nikon D3100. Aimed at those wishing to advance from the digital compact ‘point-and-shoot’ camera to something with more control. It packs some features that would be typically found on your average compact that make the transition a little easier. There’s a live view mode with full AF and a guide mode with on-screen help and prompts.
The D3100 even features HD video recording!
Below you’ll see my unboxing video of the D3100 and the AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm lens in a kit. I’m much more used to Canon DSLR’s so please forgive my lack of familiarity with the Nikon. It hasn’t taken me long to get in to it though!
nVidia’s Tegra Zone is now available for you to download off the Android Market. We got a sneak peak at this awesome little application/market back during CES 2011 and it looked and ran pretty smoothly. It had all the options a user would want including multiple screenshots, gameplay videos and HD trailers for each game, behind-the-scenes featurettes and a great looking user interface. You’ll also be able to see what people like us are saying about each game right in the description! Another great feature is that although this is technically another market application, it uses the Google Checkout back-end for payment processing. You won’t need another account to buy games, you can just use your Google account that you already have.
Games that will be available on Tegra Zone initially will be the same ones now available on the Android Market:
- Monster Madness
- Fruit Ninja THD
- Backbreaker THD
- Samurai II: Vengeance (See some of the coolest Samurai Swords here)
- Hardwood Solitaire IV
- Dungeon Defenders: First Wave HD
Also to be available after the release of Tegra Zone very shortly will be Vendetta Online which we know a lot of you Android gamers out there are looking forward to getting your hands on and playing, especially you space MMORPG fans. Other games coming shortly to Tegra Zone include Hardwood Spades and Galaxy on Fire 2. Time for us to get into the thick of things here at GDC 2011!

A few weeks ago we got to see the new Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc at MWC and later at a small event in London. James and I were in attendance and we were able to record a short video of the Arc in action. We were both really impressed with the Arc, it has a wonderful display and feels like a quality piece of hardware.
Sony Ericsson have kindly given us one of their early prototype units to take a look at. In fact we’ve been lucky enough to receive one of only a handful of working prototypes currently in the UK so I’ve spent some time pawing over it in the video below which will hopefully give you a taster of what the Arc has to offer. I didn’t manage to keep the video under the 20 minutes I was aiming for but I hope you enjoy it anyway.
We’ll have a full review of the XPERIA Arc once the hardware becomes final and we’ll have a full unboxing video once we can get our hands on a retail version!
Almost a year ago to the day we reviewed the original Palm Pre on the site. Our summary of the handset was that the operating system was great and showed some real innovation and promise for the future but that the Pre was sadly let down by poor hardware. The Pre went on sale initially on the O2 network here in the UK but sales never really reached an exciting level.
The successor to the Pre, the Palm Pre 2 was announced back in October of 2010 and looked to be a decent step up in both hardware spec and in the newer version of WebOS.
We’ll be looking closely at the Pre 2 over the next few weeks to see if HP’s influence has improved the quality of the hardware and what WebOS 2 has to offer. Our full review will be here soon.
For now take a look at the unboxing video below. You’ll notice that the Pre 2 is fussy when it comes to SIM cards, not only does it insist upon having a SIM card inserted it also must be active in order for the phone to work! So I’ll return with a demo video later too!
