Nokia 3720 Classic unboxing video

We’ve recently had some requests from readers to review some more entry-level handsets as not everyone wants a smartphone. It’s a valid point and not everyone wants a large touchscreen phone.

So I got in contact with Nokia to see what they had that fits the bill. They sent me the Nokia 3720 Classic. To be honest it amazed me what you get with what they consider to be an entry level handset. QVGA Display, FM Radio with RDS, MP4 Video player, instant messaging, email support and Nokia Maps all on a handset costing under £125 seems quite impressive.

The Nokia 3720 Calssic

On top of that the 3720 is built to be robust and is water, dust and shock resistant with an IP54 rating. Pretty handy if you are going to be using it in harsher environments.

We’ll review the Nokia 3720 Classic over the next week or so and will have the review online as soon as we are done. Below you’ll find my 3720 unboxing video which includes a little look at the OS too. Note that the video was recorded on the Sony HDR-FX1000 that we are reviewing at the moment too.

Archos 5 with Android

archos-android-phone

Pushing the boundaries of the PMP, Archos have gone and shoved Android onto their PMP. In the past people have often complained that the OS that Archos package is pretty … unfriendly. I concur, however you can get used to it (after a year). This time around they are turning their Internet Tablet into an extremely user friendly and attractive media companion. Video to follow:

Sony HDR-FX1000 unboxing video

Ever since the Sony released their HDR-FX1000 HD Handycam I’ve wanted to get my hands on one to review. As you are no doubt aware, I record a LOT of video for the website and although I am quite pleased with the results from the Sanyo HD1000 that I use at the moment I wanted to see what a proper high-end camcorder could do.

FX1000_angled_left copy

The Sony HDR-FX1000 HD Handycam

In terms of what I use a camcorder for most, unboxing videos, the main problem with lower spec. camcorders is that in order to get the best picture quality you need to record in fairly bright conditions. Not a problem in itself, however, when you consider that most of the products that I am reviewing/unboxing have extremely shiny screens then recoding in bight conditions so that you can see the device does no lend itself to being able to see what’s on that shiny screen. Recording is often a compromise.

So when thinking about getting a better camcorder for unboxings the HDR-FX1000 sounded like a good choice. Thanks to its 3 CMOS chips and the large Sony G Lens the FX1000 performs very well in lower light conditions. Whether or not this makes any difference to me in practice remains to be seen but I’m hoping for a big improvement in the video quality of my unboxings!

I’m going to spend the next few weeks reviewing the HDR-FX1000. I’ll be using it to record some videos and I’ll be sure to mention which videos I used the FX1000 for. I should have my review online in a few weeks time, it’ll probably take me that long to work out what all the buttons do. Have a look at the FX1000 unboxing video below for a quick tour of the camcorder and to see what’s included.

BlackBerry Curve 8520 Gemini unboxing video

It’s been a good few months since we last looked at a BlackBerry. That was the BlackBerry 9500 Storm which has in itself seen pretty mixed reviews. This Curve 8520 (Gemini) is RIM’s latest and greatest addition to the successful and popular Curve range.

The BlackBerry Curve 8520 Gemini

The BlackBerry Curve 8520 Gemini

The Gemini certainly has the BlackBerry look with a QWERTY keyboard that could be from any number of other handsets in the range. However, ROM have added some new features to the 8520 that you wont find elsewhere. First of all there’s the optical optical trackpad instead of a trackball or D-Pad and then, on the top of the unit, there’s three additional media control buttons right where you’d need them.

Personally I think that RIM have done a decent job with the design and I like the rather understated black finish more than the typical silver of other curve models.

James is finishing up the review of the BlackBerry Curve 8520 Gemini at the moment and we’ll have the review for you in a day or two. In the mean time have a look at the unboxing video. If you have any questions of comments be sure to share them with us using the forum link at the bottom of this post and we’ll do our best to respond.

Palm Pixi Videos

9525_158210250478_32915930478_4025145_6305443_a

PreCentral.net has a hands on video with then Pixi, I’ve attached both videos below. Thin, touchstone, 2mg cam, 8gb, 3.5 headphone jack, removable back covers. Looking quite a bit like a cartoon flattened Palm Treo Pro without most of the nicer lines the Pro had. It’s kind of bland and the screen looks like it could have been bigger, but obvious the gesture zone need to take up a certain amount of space. Specs and vids after the break

Shopsavvy coming to Windows Mobiles

shopsavvy

ShopSavvy is a popular Android app that allows users to scan the barcode of any product using their device’s built-incamera. After the barcode is scanned, the app will quickly search the internet for the best prices and list the results. This is a great way to compare prices while you’re out shopping. With a little convincing, you could probably even use it to get some stores to price match certain products.
I’m sure most Windows Mobile users are well aware of such shopping apps available on other platforms. Aside from ShopSavvy for Android, the iPhone app store also has a plethora of these apps available to users. Unfortunately, barcode scanning apps are hard to come by for Windows Mobile. There’s Barcorama, but its interface is dull and development seems to have subsided for it. So where’s the Windows Mobile love?

O2 XDA Venn unboxing video

O2 released the new XDA Venn last week here in the UK but it’s not a totally new handset. The Venn has been on sale for a while in the USA as the Pantech Matrix Pro on the AT&T network and is also known as the Pantech Mustang 2. For those of you unfamiliar with the Pantech or the Venn it has a unique trick up its sleeve in that it has a dual slide action with both a numeric keypad and and full QWERTY keypad.

The O2 XDA Venn

The Venn is one of the few Windows Mobile Standard devices available at the moment so there’s no touch screen here. It’s a fairly well featured handset though with 528mHz Qualcomm CPU,  128mb RAM, 256mb ROM and quad band connectivity. However, there is a glaring omission in my opinion, the total lack of WiFi connectivity is a real shame as this is something that’s become pretty much standard on most handsets now.

We’ll be reviewing the XDA Venn this week and will have the review online shortly, so for now sit back and take a look at the unboxing video below.

O2 XDA Venn unboxing video

  • Qualcomm 528mHz CPU

  • 2.4" QVGA (240×320) transflective display
  • Quad Band
  • GPRS, EDGE, 3G, HSDPA, HSUPA
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • MicroSD memory card support
  • 2.0 megapixel camera
  • GPS(?)
  • Weight: Dimensions: 106 x 51 x 21mm (H x W x D)
