O2 Travel – use your mobile worry free when abroad

O2-Logo

Nice, our second roaming post of the day.  O2 today announces the launch of O2 Travel, providing customers with a worry free way to use their mobiles throughout Europe this summer. Available from July to all O2 pay monthly customers, including O2 business customers*, the simple new approach offers 25MB of data per day for £1.99. When making voice calls, customers will be charged a one-off 50p per call, with minutes then taken from their existing tariff.
O2 Travel marks the next step in O2’s commitment to help customers banish concerns over their bill when they get home, allowing worry free tweets, Facebook status updates, and calls home from poolside in the sun. It represents the best value international offer from O2 to date, enabling customers to make their holiday as connected as they wish.

O2 Travel was developed using customer insight which highlights the growing demand for mobile use abroad:
. Mobile internet usage whilst on holiday is growing at more than 100% a year
. 60% of customers who use the mobile internet in the UK also use it whilst abroad
. Facebook, Google and BBC News are the most popular websites to vist while on holiday
. France and Spain are the most popular countries for customers calling back to the UK

With 25MB of data per day customers can keep connected to all their favourite sites, making 2012 the first ever social media connected summer holidays. Gone are the days of showing holiday snaps once the tan has faded: now holiday moments can be shared as soon as you hit the beach.

Samsung announce the Omnia M Windows Phone

Omnia M

It has been some time now since we saw a new Windows Phone from Samsung. The Omnia M is due to launch initially in Europe in the not too distant future and looks to be a pretty sweet Windows Phone.

Sporting a 4 inch Super AMOLED display, powered by a single core 1GHz processor and with a 5 mega pixel camera the Omnia M may well be over shadowed by the Samsung Galaxy S III and Note but it looks to be a nice mid range handset if the price is right.

My only concern is the 4GB of internal storage space. The device appears to not have support for a MicroSD card which puts a huge limit on the phones capabilities.

Still, if it is cheap enough I am sure the carriers will sell plenty.

EU roaming charges set to fall from July

EU

It’s about time this was addressed as us mobile users get ripped off if we travel overseas.  From July 2012 European Union roaming prices are set to be capped thanks to a parliament vote.

After July 1st operators will only be able to charge 29 euro cents (24p) a minute to make a call, 8 cents (7p) a minute to receive a call, 9 cents (8p) to send a SMS message and 70 cents a megabyte (58p) for data usage.

The long term plan is for EU roaming prices to stay the same as domestic which would save many of us a small fortune. The EU also plans to allow consumers to pick a separate operator for roaming without changing SIM cards from 2014.

EU rapporteur and MEP Angelika Niebler said: “Parliament has succeeded in its call for cheaper roaming prices for consumers, and in particular for data roaming.

“In addition, from July 2014, consumers will be able to choose an operator other than their national operator for roaming services. The new rules will also help to open up the market to new entrants and so increase competition.”

Great news all round.

The police pursuit at BlackBerry World 2012 – Video

IMG-20120502-00106

The following text is serious but not nearly as serious as the high (I mean low) speed pursuit that took place at BlackBerry World 2012 between the QNX Porsche 911 and the Dodge Charger Police Enforcer. You must watch this video. It’s a classic!

In anticipation of the the unveiling of RIM’s new QNX-based BlackBerry 10 Operating System, there was a high intensity buzz at this year’s ‘Everything BlackBerry’ show in Orlando, where 5,000 developers, software and hardware vendors, and wireless carrier reps came together to see what the host company had to offer.
Speaking for the first time as CEO at the show, was Thorsten Heins, who told the audience at a packed news conference, that “We’re here to win. We’re not here to just be in the game.” Heins and many other BlackBerry keynote speakers focused attention on BlackBerry 10 – a QNX based operating system that is so much more than just a smartphone OS. BlackBerry 10 is a whole new mobile computing platform that not only drives the BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 tablet, but is also the OS for everything from medical devices to nuclear reactors; from commercial airliners to most of the cars found on North America’s roads.

BlackBerry Curve 9320 UK Carrier Prices

BlackBerry Curve 9320_Black_ENGuk_FrontWith the BlackBerry Curve 9320 launching imminently I thought it may be a good idea to let you have all the carrier prices that have been sent to me in one convenient place. There are not massive differences but some offers are certainly a little more attractive. The other thing to remember if you are picking up the new Curve is to not just go with the cheapest deal but to check you have good network coverage at home/work or school.

I have been hands on with the new device today and I can honestly say it is a massive improvement over the 8520/9300 that have done so well here in the UK. There should be no reason why our teenagers should not stay Team BlackBerry.

The BlackBerrey Curve 9320 is a beauty!

T-Mobile UK  will have the 9320 available free from £15.50 per month on a 24 month plan, or for £149.99 on pay as you go.

Carphone Warehouse will have the handset from free on £20.50 per month contract and SIM free from £129.95 in black.

Orange UK is pleased to announce that it will shortly be offering the BlackBerry 9320 free from £10.50 per month on a 24 month plan, or for £139.99 on pay as you go.

Three are charging a respectable £139.99 on PAYG. All in One 15 costs £15 and gives 30-day access to all-you-can-eat data along with 300 any-network minutes and 3,000 texts. Or All in One 25 costs £25 and offers 500 minutes, 3,000 texts and all-you-can-eat data for a 30-day period.

Vodafone are still to confirm prices at this stage I’m afraid but this post will be updated as soon as they let me know their plan of action.
