G1 users may be getting a much-needed update which comes with a virtual on-screen keyboard (similar to the iPhone). This would be a nice addition since users have to slide open the keyboard for all typing purposes. It is slightly inconvenient to slide the keyboard out, especially if you are typing a short response, so this update will eliminate that completely. Call it copying the iPhone if you want, but it’s practical and makes perfect sense. There is not a specific date set for the release, but lets hope it is soon!

Verizon (Vodafone owns 45% of Verizon Wireless) will complete its $28.1 billion takeover of Alltel on January 9. This will add
more than Alltel’s 13 million customers to Verizon’s 66 million to create the largest
mobile network in the US. Both Verizon and Alltel use Qualcomm’s CDMA technology which will hopefully avoid the problems that Sprint encountered when it merged with Nextel in 2005. That merger began the rapid decline of Sprint when it failed to successfully integrate Sprint’s CDMA network and Nextel’s IDEN network.
