HTC Sensation demo video

Sensation As always HTC put on a great show at their press event today. I managed to shoot a few minutes of video of the HTC Sensation. It’s only a brief demo but does cover some of the best features of the flagship superphone.

Obviously we hope to get a review unit soon and we’ll have more video as soon as possible. I’ve also got a video of the press announcement uploading at the moment too and will have that live for you later today.

The HTC sensation – HTC’s new flagship smartphone

HTC Sensation_Left Today at a press conference in London HTC have officially announced their latest flagship smartphone, the HTC Sensation. The Sensation will be HTC’s first dual-core smartphone.

I’ve been lucky enough to play with the HTC Sensation already and can tell you it really is an awesome phone. The screen is a 4.3" super-LCD capacitive touchscreen running at QHD, 540×960 resolution. This is a true 16:9 aspect ratio which is great for watching movies. The screen is slightly recessed with interesting curved edges. This doesn’t just look good but also protects the screen when the handset is placed face down. However, the screen is made from Gorilla Glass so damage should not be a big problem.

The Sensation has an ultra thin form factor and despite the 4.3" screen is physically slightly smaller and lighter than the Desire HD.

The processor is a dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260 running at 1.2ghz, this coupled with 768MB RAM, 4GB ROM and Gingerbread 2.3.3 should keep things running pretty smoothly.

The latest version of HTC Sense, 3.0, has new 3D and cube-like widgets. This is a great effect and really adds some visual interest to the home screen. It certainly helps to show off the QHD screen too.

There’s a new 8 megapixel camera and an all new ‘enhanced camera experience’. The main new feature here is the instant capture function, the photo is taken the instant you press the button so that you don’t miss those precious moments.

Thanks to the improved power of dual-core video can be captured in HD at 1080p resolution while the live touch focus allows you to get creative by touching on the area of the screen that you want to be in focus while recording is in progress. HTC also include a basic video editing application so that you can crop/trim you video before sharing via YouTube etc.

HTC have made enhancements to the lock screen too. Rather than just simply unlocking the phone and opening at the home screen there’s a new feature that allows you to unlock and launch one of four specific applications. You can customise which applications live there but you could for example unlock straight to the camera app or maybe to your email account.

Also on the lock screen you can place live widgets so you can have Twitter updates, email or weather updated live on the lock screen if you so desire.

HTC Watch is HTC’s movie delivery service. You can buy or rent movies from within the Watch application and once download starts you can commence watching the movie within 10 seconds while the rest of the content downloads in the background. In practice I guess this will be dependent upon connection speeds. Movies will can either be purchased in-app or via carrier billing depending upon the carrier setup.

There’s obviously so much more to talk about with the HTC Sensation so I hope to have some hands on video online shortly after the press conference finishes.

The full specification and more images can be found below. We’ll have our HTC Sensation Review online as soon as we can get our hands on one. I can’t wait!

HTC Desire S review

DesireSSo far this year HTC have announced 6 new products and here we are looking at the first, the HTC Desire S.

Many have said that HTC’s latest Android handsets are simply a refresh of last years models and while the HTC Desire S may not be a revolution the look and feel is fairly different to it’s predecessor. The screen size may indeed have stayed the same but it has now been switched to an S-LCD rather than AMOLED panel. In practical terms though the difference is hard to spot.

Perhaps the most noticeable change is that the physical buttons below the screen on the Desire have been replaced with the touch sensitive kind and the optical trackpad is long gone too. This shaves a few millimetres off the length of the handset.

The Desire S has been built quite differently to last years Desire. In fact the difference is from the ground up in that the body has been constructed from a single piece of machined aluminium in much the same way as we say with the HTC legend. This makes the handset really robust and have a cool-to-the-touch finish that you only get with metal.

Read on for the full review and to see how this years HTC Desire S shapes up to last years model as well as handsets from competitors.

Acer Liquid Metal unboxing video

LiquidMetal-main Acer have done quite well with their Android powered handsets that they sell under the liquid brand. Starting with the Acer Liquid itself about 18 months ago then moving to the Liquid E and then a special edition Liquid E Ferrari model.

Overall we’ve been rather impress with the Liquid handsets, they offer great features whilst not breaking the bank. The other great thing about them is that Acer are pretty quick to release updates for their handsets, the Liquid started life as Android 1.6 but soon went to 2.1

This latest Liquid Metal model comes with Android 2.2 Froyo (and update will be available soon), 800MHz CPU and 512MB RAM. What I like most about the Liquid Metal is that you get a 3.6″ capacitive screen that’s 480×800 pixels where other handsets at this price point have HVGA displays.

Check out the unboxing video below, Patrick’s full review is just a few days away.

Importing video in to iMovie for iPad – how to video

imovie_ipad_gallery1_20110302 Since the iPad 2 was announced a little over a month ago one of the things I was most looking forward to using was iMovie for iPad 2. iMovie was demonstrated at the iPad 2 press event and it looked like it would be an ideal way for me to do video editing while out ‘on the road’ as I’m frequently at various product launches recording video but to get the video edited while away from home requires me to take along my Macbook a well as my camera and cables etc. iMovie on the iPad looked like it might be a great way to bridge the gap while still enabling me to travel light.

So I started to play with iMovie last weekend and frankly I was instantly disappointed! I record almost all of my videos on a Sanyo XACTI camcorder, the video quality is good, the cameras are nice and small and recording to SD card makes life easy. So I put the SD card in to the camera connection kit for the iPad and plugged it in.

It takes only a few seconds for the thumbnails of the recorded videos to appear and just a little longer to import the video in to the iPad. Once the videos are imported I can see them in the recent imports and they playback quite happily on the iPad itself. The frustration starts when you launch iMovie and cant see the videos you’ve just imported!

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc (retail) unboxing video

Sony-Ericsson-XPERIA-Arc I’ve recorded a few videos of the XPERIA Arc already but previously I’ve only been able to look at a prototype build. I few days ago though I was lucky enough to get my hands on the final retail version of the handset and as promised I’ve recorded an unboxing video which you can find below.

Hardware-wise there’s no difference between this and the earlier version that I looked at but the retail version does have the latest ROM build which is a bit more fluid than the prototype, probably because it’s no longer set up for debugging.

We’ll be reviewing this XPERIA Arc over the next few weeks, as I said before, we really prefer to review final hardware.

One thing to note from the video below, the Micro HDMI cable was not included in my box but it will be bundled with the Arc when it goes on sale later this week.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play unboxing video

Play-Angled Rumours of a Playstation phone have been circulating for months so it wasn’t too much of a surprise when Sony Ericsson officially announced the XPERIA Play last month at MWC.

The Android-powered Play has a large capacitive touchscreen display which, at 4″, is going to be great for both gaming and video play back. There’s also a 1GHz Snapdragon to keep the game play fluid.

Of course the real trick up the sleeve is the sliding screen. Whereas on other handsets you might expect to see a hardware QWERTY keyboard under the display, the XPERIA Play as a Playstation-style control pad complete with two analogue controls.

In the video below you can see my unbox the play before taking a tour around a few bits of the OS and UI and then having a stab at a couple of the pre-installed Playstation games. I think we are the first to have our hands on a fully boxed XPERIA Play too!
