Nokia Booklet 3G unboxing video

The Nokia Booklet 3G is Nokia’s first foray in to the ‘proper laptop’ market. Upon initial inspection you might think the price tag is rather high for a device of a similar size to many other netbook style computers hitting the market but there’s a while lot more to consider.

First of all the Nokia Booklet has a built in 3G modem for connectivity on the move without the need for dongles or teathers. It features a 10.1", HD ready, glass screen, HDMI output, 12 Hour battery life, SD card reader and a hot-swappable SIM card slot to name but a few of its stand out features. The built-in HSDPA gives you internet on the move, while WiFi and Bluetooth give you the other now standard connectivity options.

So looking at the Booklet more closely I have to say that I am VERY impressed with the build quality. The majority of the chassis is made of aluminium nicely designed a made too. Then there’s the glass screen which looks beautifully clear, glass adding that extra optical quality that cant be matched by plastic. To be honest, if I were shown this computer minus its branding I think I would have guessed it was a new smaller Apple MacBook.

Oh yes. It’s talents don’t end there, with Nokia’s mini laptop PC also features onboard assisted-GPS and Ovi Maps, a great navigation solution. There is also a single front-facing camera nestled above the 10.1-inch HD screen for video chat, with Bluetooth and a built-in SD card reader also making appearances.

Have a look at my quick unboxing and tour video for more:

Nokia N900 replacing N97?

We reviewed the Nokia N900 recently and were quite impressed with the new Maemo OS, personally I like it better than Symbian. We also reported that the Nokia N97 and N97 mini seem to have been withdrawn from sale, at about the same time that the Nokia N900 hits the market.

Working in London I’ve started seeing posters and adverts for the Nokia N900 popping up all over the place and there are some huge adverts on the tube too so I’m guessing that Nokia are aiming the N900 at the consumer market now. So is the N900 ousting the N97 so that Nokia can sell the more expensive handset or is the N900 filling the void left by the N97 and N97 mini?

My personal opinion is that the N900 is probably filling the void. There have been lots of problems reported with the N97 that Nokia did not, apparently, address when they launched the N97 mini and according to one of our friends at the Carphone Warehouse, the N97’s were probably the third most returned handset just behind the Satio and Aino.

We did also hear a rumour recently that Nokia stated that 90% of the N97 handsets returned had no faults and that the reason for the high return rate was that customers were not able to get used to the user interface!? If that’s true then I think that the average consumer is definitely going to struggle with the N900 as I would have said that was more of an enthusiast phone than the N97’s were!

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Do have a look at our Nokia N900 unboxing (complete with fox) and subsequent N900 demo and N900 review.

HTC Bravo: Europe’s Nexus One?

There have been a few stories on the news wire today about a newly anticipated Android powered device from HTC. I’m talking about the HTC Bravo, which is thought go on sale throughout Europe within the next few months.

HTC-Bravo

The HTC Bravo

If you think that the HTC Bravo looks a lot like the Nexus One then there’s a good reason for that. HTC made the Nexus One for Google and it is believed that the Nexus One was based upon the designs that HTC already had for the HTC Bravo and not the other way around. Does it matter which of these handsets you buy? Well I doubt HTC will care which!

So if the HTC Bravo goes on sale throughout Europe where will that leave the Nexus One? Will we see some carriers taking the HTC unit where others might opt for the Google branded model? Or does this mean no Nexus One in Europe at all? My guess would be that both will be sold.

The HTC Bravo features the same 3.7 inch AMOLED, the same 1Ghz Snapdragon mobile processor, 512MB RAM and 512MB ROM. The HTC Bravo also features a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and will run on the Android 2.1 operating system just the same as the Nexus One.

I’m reviewing the Google Nexus One at the moment so please do have a look at my Nexus One unboxing and demo video and also let me know if I can answer any of your questions!

Acer beTouch E101 unboxing video

Acer have launched a number of new handsets recently from the Android powered Acer Liquid that we reviewed recently to several Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets including the Acer beTouch E101 that we are looking at here.

The Acer beTouch E101

The Acer beTouch E101

The beTouch range includes several handsets, the E101 being the entry level followed by the E100 and then the S200. The E101 and E100 are virtually the same handset but the E100 has 3G where the E101 does not.

The Acer beTouch E101 is very much an entry level device and is probably the best value for money Windows Mobile 6.5 handset on the market. You can pick one up for £150 (+VAT) from Clove Technology. While the E101 is undoubtedly an budget handset don’t be fooled in to thinking it’s overly basic. It has a generous 3.2″ display, a decent amount of RAM/ROM and still manages to squeeze in GPS and Google Maps!

The Acer E101 and the E100 are available in both Black and White, the E100 offering 3G connectivity on top of the specification of the E101.

We’ll be reviewing the E100 over the next week or so and will have the review live as soon as it’s complete. Take a look at the unboxing video below where I’ll take you on a tour of the hardware and briefly dip in to the OS/UI.

Nexus One vs HTC HD2

A few days ago I posted some pictures and comments of the Nexus One vs the iPhone 3GS. That post seems to have gone down rather well and many of you have now asked for for photos of the HTC HD2 along side the Nexus One.

I’ve been using the Nexus One for about 5 days now and I’m still enjoying the experience. It’s a speedy little device for sure. Thanks to Paul I’ve also discovered a different web browser called Dophin Browser, that offers Multitouch on the Nexus One and so adds pinch to zoom functionality. It’s a pretty handy add-on, just a shame that the native applications don’t support multitouch.

So to the HD2 comparison photos.

As you can clearly see from the pictures below, the HTC HD2 is significantly larger than the Nexus One. The screen on the HD2 is 0.6″ bigger at 4.3″ vs the Nexus One at ‘only’ 3.7″. Both are the same 480×800 resolution though and both are capacitive. The Nexus One has an AMOLED screen though which makes the colours brighter and more vivid. The HD2 measures 120.5 x 67 x 11 mm and the Nexus 119 x 59 x 11.5mm. I think the size difference looks and feels more significant that the raw numbers suggest but that may be partly due to the HD2 being almost 30 grams heavier.

Nexus One and HD2 side-by-side

In terms of device ‘thickness’ there’s very little between the HD2 and the Nexus. I fact the Nexus is 0.5mm thicker than the HD2 which does surprise me. Holding and using them both you would think that it was the other way around at least. This, I assume, is probably due to the HD2 having slightly squarer edges than the Nexus.

Nexus One and HD2 bottom view

Nexons One and HD2 side on

Personally I think that this shot best demonstrates the size difference between the two devices. Having used the Nexus one for 5 days now when I pick up the HD2 it starts to feel a little too big.

Nexus-v-HD2-5

So to completed the photo montage of handset comparisons here are a few of all three devices together. So we have Nexus One vs iPhone vs HD2. Looking at the three like this I think that the iPhone is starting to look a bit dated, I’m pretty sure that Apple will be addressing this later in the year! The HD2 is a big beast of a device both in terms of size and specification.

Three MiFi unboxing video

We’ve spoken about the Three MiFi ‘dongle’ a few times in the past on T&M and we had even had a discussion about it on the Mobiletech Addicts podcast a few weeks ago.

The Three MiFi

The Three MiFi

I say it’s a dongle but perhaps this little device doesn’t quite fit that criteria. Essentially the MiFi, made by Huawei, is a small battery operated unit that takes a Three SIM card. The unit connects to Three’s 3G data network and then shares that connection over WiFi so it’s simply a case of connecting any WiFi capable device to it. The unit itself has a preconfigured WEP key that can be altered later so it keeps you connection secure but you can also connect up to 4 devices simultaneously. It’s basically a wireless 3G router.

An excellent bit of kit and we’re writing up a review for you as we speak. I thought I’d just do a quick video for you so that you can see what it looks like and what’s included so please check out the brief unboxing below.

MiFi Specification:

  • Download speeds of up to 3.6MBPS

  • USB cable (mini plug/standard plug)
  • No internal memory
  • Memory card supported, microSD 32GB
  • Dimensions: 86 x 46.5 x 10.5mm
  • Weight: 90g

Nexus One Multitouch video

Since its launch almost two weeks ago there has been lots of discussion about the Nexus One and whether or not it supports multitouch. There seems to be some confusion about multitouch, it’s believed that Google/HTC did not implement multitouch on the Nexus One out-of-the-box due to some kind of patent related legal wrangle with Apple. Not sure if that’s true or not but sure sounds plausible.

The Google Nexus One

The Google Nexus One

As most will know, the Android OS itself certainly supports multitouch and we we’re pretty confident that the Nexus One hardware supported it. Rumour had it that multitouch support had been removed from the US version of the Nexus One, the version that’s shipping now, all together and that we would have to wait until a UK or European version was launched, possibly by a carrier, to see multitouch added.

However, I can confirm that the Nexus One hardware and Android OS on the Nexus One definitely supports multitouch! As you can see from my little video demo below it’s simply that the apps pre-installed on the Nexus One are not multitouch capable, so the pre-installed maps and web browser for example do not support it. BUT, if you want a multitouch web browser there is an option, check out the video below:

Nexus One Multitouch video

So if you are looking for a multitouch web browser you can grab the Dolphin Browser from Android Market, it’s even a free app and not a bad little browser either and not only offers pinch to zoom but also allows you to configure some of your own gesture based swipes.

The Dolphin Browser

Now the hope is that we’ll be able to get our hands on a multitouch enabled version of Google Maps that we can install on the Nexus One and hopefully an image browser too.

Thanks to my mate Paul from MoDaCo for letting me know.

Don’t forget to also check out my extended Nexus One unboxing and demo video. It’s a pretty long one so grab a cup of coffee before you start! 🙂

Motorola Milestone Competition Winner

The competition has been running since the 26th of December and has seen literally thousands of entries. It has taken me the some time to get all of the entries in to one list in Excel and as with other competitions we simply use a random number generator from the internet to randomly select the winner.

So it’s time to announce our winner. Our random number has selected forum member ‘Justin’ who entered via the forum. I’ve already sent you an email Justin but please do get in touch with me to arrange delivery of your Motorola Milestone.

Please join me in congratulating our winner. I’m sorry that not everyone can be a winner but if any of the handset manufacturers wants to give me several thousand handsets to give away I’d be happy to do that! 🙂

As the last few competitions have been so very successful there will definitely be more soon, just keep an eye on the site or Twitter for announcements.

Nexus One vs iPhone

I’ve only had the Nexus One for a few days and have to admit that so far it’s been pretty difficult to put it down, I think it’s fair to say that I quite like it!

After posting my Nexus One video on Saturday I’ve had loads of requests from readers asking how the Nexus One compares to the iPhone, both physically and in terms of functionality. In terms of the functional comparison I thought I would leave that until I publish m Nexus One review, which I am working on at the moment. However, to satisfy your curiosity in terms of the physical differences between the two I thought you light enjoy a few photos.

 Nexus-v-iPhone-5

Looking at the Nexus One and the iPhone 3GS from the front they are of a similar size. The Nexus One is a little taller (119mm v 115mm) than the iPhone and a little narrower (59.8mm v 62.1mm). The Nexus is is also 5 grams lighter than the iPhone. In terms of the screen the Nexus One looks to have a much larger display than the iPhone but in reality the difference is just 0.2″, however, the Nexus One display is much higher res than the iPhone, 800 x 480 pixels for the Nexus against the 320 x 480 of the iPhone. When you look at the screens powered up the difference is clear!

Nexus-v-iPhone-2

Nexus-v-iPhone-1

Nexus-v-iPhone-3

Comparing both devices end-on the Nexus One is slightly thinner than the iPhone, but there’s less than 1mm between them. Despite the very curved back on the iPhone, which helps to make it appear thinner than it is, the Nexus One feels thinner than the 1mm may suggest.

Nexus-v-iPhone-4

Perhaps the reason why the Nexus One feels much thinner than the iPhone could be down to the camera placement. The 11.5mm of the Nexus is measured at the thickest part, which is just at the top by the camera which sticks out a little from the back. As you can see from the image above this makes the Nexus a bit thicker at the top than the rest of the unit so overall the device feels thinner.

So that’s just a few shots of the two devices side-by-side to give you an idea of the physical differences. They are quite similar really, anyone would think that Google were trying to compete with Apple or something! 😛

I’ll be back with my review as soon as I can get it done for you but that said, I’m not rushing it. I want to use the Nexus One for a good few days before I start to offer my opinion. If you do have any questions though, please do post them on any of the Nexus One forum posts and I’ll do my best to either answer them right away or add them to the full review.
