Sony ACX-2 Case for DSC-QX10/QX100 and Xperia Z1

ACX2-2Having recently acquired a Sony Xperia Z1 for myself and already owning a DSC-QX10 Lens I decided to get myself a case for the Z1 which would allow me to attach the lens to the camera without the need to use the slightly chunky mount that comes with the QX10.

Sony now produce cases that will allow their two lenses to the Xperia Z, Z1 and Z Ultra in black and white finishes. The price for the Z1 is quite expensive for what is (without the lens attachment) quite a basic case at £25 from the Sony website.

I decided to give it the case a try anyway and when I received it I was quite pleased to note that the case actually solved one of my criticisms of the Z1 and Z Ultra, namely the glass construction and slim profile make both devices very slippery.

The fit of the case onto the Z1 is, as you would expect from an official accessory, perfect and the lens attaches quickly and effortlessly. I was really impressed and decided that the Z1 with the case would be my every day device for my week long holiday overseas.

The ease of attaching the lens to the phone made this my goto camera for the whole holiday and I found that i did not take my DSLR out of the safe once on the whole trip.

The case did have one major downside however! You may have noticed that the photos of the case and camera that I have shown so far are taken from the Sony website. The reason for this is that on the second day of my trip, whilst sitting and having lunch I heard a “crack” noise from my pocket. Upon inspecting the case, two corners had broken off and there was a crack down the back of the case.

A quick web search reveled this to be a fairly common occurrence and that the normal response upon contacting Sony is to be offered a refund rather than an exchange.

I managed to baby the case through the rest of the holiday but I will not be seeking a refund and I will, in fact, be purchasing a second one.

The reason for this strange course of action is that during my research into the cracking problem, I discovered that many people have successfully removed the camera connection from the case and have attached it to an alternative case which is more durable. This is my plan as well and if I’m successful I will post up the results.

Here are some shots of the damage to the case and how the camera looks when it is attached. It is an exceptionally good idea that was let down by the execution.

The wake of Flappy Bird

flappy-bird-ebay-iphoneApparently the hysteria around is Flappy Bird reaching new levels as someone put an iPhone 5 up on eBay for sale with the game installed on it. Now that in itself isn’t a big deal, however the fact that it sold for $94,000 is. Sure there have been crazier things that have happened on eBay but $94,000 for an iPhone with a free game on it is pretty insane.

This obviously reeks of rubbish, perhaps it has been targeted by a community to drive up the price and create a headline. This is further fueled by speculation that eBay took it down due to the listing broke some of the rules eBay has for posting listings. This isn’t confirmed at all though, only a rumour.

A quick search has yielded even weirder auctions going on related to Flappy Bird including Iphone 4s with the Flapster installed for a Buy It Now price of £1,000,000.00. A rare piece of paper with flappy bird written on it for £20,000.00. An Apple iPad Air 16GB for £1,350.00 with that Bird game installed and an another auction currently sitting at £6100.00. I would have linked these auctions however they probably won’t be there for much longer and I wouldn’t want to tempt you away from you hard earned cash as you know you couldn’t resist a slightly beaten up iPhone with a copy of a free game that people really only got annoyed at.

The uncoming HTC Desire 8 leaked

htc-new-desire-leakA new leak seems to point at a possible HTC Desire 8 debut in the coming weeks at Mobile World Congress.

We have recently seen another unreleased HTC smartphone was revealed on Wednesday in a freshly leaked image with isn’t the much anticipated HTC One 2. Engadget managed to find an image of the HTC Desire 8 and this would look to be an upcoming mid-range Android phone from HTC that would likely debut in the coming weeks.

The phone will reportedly include a 5.5-inch display, a 13-megapixel rear camera, an impressive 5-megapixel front-facing camera and those stereo BoomSound speakers everyone loves so much.

As for when it might be unveiled, Engadget states March 18th as a possible launch date. That would make sense for Mobile World Congress as a launch platform.

iPhone 6 going bezel-less?

iphone 6There are plenty of rumours about the forthcoming iPhone 6 out there at the moment, some of which also contradict others. However, there does seem to be a growing consensus that the iPhone 6 may have a larger, bezel-less screen.

Certainly there have been suggestions that the iPhone 6 could come in 4.7″ and 5.7″ variants which also seems to be becoming more credible.

The latest rumour to suggests two versions of the iPhone 6 comes from the South China Morning Post who claims an Apple insider has revealed details and that the new iPhone 6 will go on sale in September, later than many industry analysts believe.

It has also been suggested that Apple may ditch the existing Gorilla Glass screens in favour of Sapphire screens which are claimed to be virtually “indestructible”.

The last rumour, for today at least, relates to the iPhone 6 cameras. Claims from the news site Nikkei, say that Apple and Sony are in negotiations at the moment and that Sony may in fact be the supplier of the front and rear facing camera components for the iPhone 6. There have been further claims that the rear camera could be a 13 megapixel shooter and have a built in optical image stabilizer.

Another pathetic swipe at Chromebooks by Microsoft

Screenshot 2014-02-11 11.24.17

Microsft have put together another advert for their new budget Windows 8 laptop built by Asus.

Honestly, the laptop looks quite nice, however, the content of the add is anything but. Singling out the Chromebook as an online only device, users of the Windows laptop can achieve so much more without an internet connection… like Chat!  The only real factor on display is that Microsoft must really be concerned about the Chromebooks and perhaps lends more substance to the likes of Samsung ending their Windows laptop production run and Dell preferring Windows 7 over 8 as a option.

Lovely to see that Google does not feel the need to retaliate, just let Microsoft embarrass themselves.

HTC M8 to have 2 Cameras

HTC-One-2-M8New images of the HTC M8 leaked by nowhereelse.fr yesterday reveal not one, but two rear facing cameras. Initial thoughts were that one of the sensors would actually be a fingerprint reader but, despite the blurry nature of the shots from nowhereelse.fr it’s quite clear to see that both have lens elements in them. One appears to be the same as the Ultrapixel sensor on the HTC One while the other looks to be quite different. There’s also a dual LED flash evident that looks to be very similar to the two-tone version we have on the iPhone 5s

So why two cameras?

There are lots of theories at the moment including being able to take 3D photos. Personally I think we’re looking at a 4MP Ultrapixel camera that’s the same as the HTC One which will be ideal for low-light and fast action photos. And then I suspect that the other camera will have a much higher pixel count but have a smaller pixel size, so less light sensitivity. The cameras seem way too close together to give much of a 3D image separation.

Another theory is that the two cameras will work simultaneously and may or may not have the same pixel count but that together they will offer better IQ and light sensitivity, both images captured on each being combined with some clever interpolation software to push the boundaries and offer a best of both worlds solution.

Whatever they are we look set to find out in a few weeks time!

HP and Asus announce Chromeboxes

hp-chromeboxHP has just announced a Chromebox! We have heard rumblings of Chromeboxes in the past however, one has yet to appear on a shelf nearby. ASUS also announced its own Chromebox this week and it seems both devices will be competing against each other fiercely. So, we should really be getting used to seeing them.

Specs and features are very similar between the HP and ASUS desktop Chrome OS unit, but it doesn’t seem like HP is offering a lower-end device.

  • 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor (Chromebox for Meetings version)
  • HDMI, DisplayPort and four USB 3.0 ports
  • Bluetooth
  • Wall-mountable (VESA)

Three USB 3.0 ports, HDMI and DisplayPort adapters, and a VESA wall mount will feature as standard across the range.

In a nod to their Chromebook line-up HP are offeriung four different coloured designs will be available, all with artsy fartsy names: Smoke Silver, Ocean Turquoise, Snow White and Twinkle Black.

We don’t know much else about other specs for now. We are not even sure what kind of processor the regular version will have, but it will be a Haswell processor. If we base it on ASUS’ hardware, though, it should be either an Intel Celeron or i3 processor.

HTC M8 Mini mentioned in new leak

HTC-One-Mini-900x600Only yesterday we were talking about the anticipated replacement for the HTC One, the HTC M8. Today there’s a new rumour about the M8’s little brother, the HTC M8 Mini.

In a tweet yesterday the omnipresent tipster, @evleaks, posted the following tweet:

HTC M8 mini (mem_ul): SD400 (1.4GHz x4), 4.5″, 720p, 1GB/16GB (+microSD), 13MP/5MP, a/b/g/n/ac, BT4.0, KK4.4.2, Sense6.0, buttons on screen.

Claiming that the HTC M8 Mini will have Quad-core Snapdragon 400 at 1.4GHz, 4.5″ 720p display, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage, MicroSD card slot, 13MP primary camera and 5MP front facing camera, Android KitKat 4.4.2, HTC Sense 6.0 and Wifi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac.

This sounds like it’ll be a pretty awesome phone in its own right and the 13MP camera perhaps calls in to question the claims from some sources that the M8 itself will have ‘only a 4MP sensor’.

However, in my mind a device with 4.5-inch display is really pushing it to be called mini!
