Raspberry Pi ‘lite’ version hits the shelves

raspberry-pi Here at Tracy & Matt towers we’ve been using Raspberry Pi’s for a while now, they are a good development platform for hardware controllers etc. Although I still prefer the MBED platform.

The Raspberry Pi has been hugely successful, mainly because its reasonably cheap while still packing a punch when it comes to hardware performance. It can be used for movie streaming and even runs several versions of Linux.

As if the current version was not cheap enough a new lightweight or ‘bare-bones’ version has just gone on sale.

The new Model A has the same CPU and footprint as the B model but has less memory (256MB), no Ethernet and just a single USB socket.

The Model A goes on sale today at a variety of outlets for just £16. If you are looking for something to tinker with for a DIY project they are definitely worth a look!

Twitter: have you been compromised?

twitter_fail_whale_wide This week Twitter confirmed that they are the latest high-profile victims of mass-scale hacking. Over 250,000 have had their accounts hacked. Twitter said that they will be emailing owners of those accounts that have been affected.

So what should you do?

My advice; should you receive an email claiming to be from Twitter regarding your account and password, do NOT click any links in it. Instead go directly to the Twitter website and change your password. If you are in any doubt it’s probably a good idea to go ahead and do this anyway!

Twitter has advised all users to "ensure they are following good password hygiene" – not only on the social networking site but also elsewhere on the internet.

Their advice is as follows:

"Make sure you use a strong password – at least 10 (but more is better) characters and a mixture of upper- and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols – that you are not using for any other accounts or sites. Using the same password for multiple online accounts significantly increases your odds of being compromised."

It is believed that email addresses, account info and encrypted passwords have been stolen by an unknown hacking group. Despite it being encrypted passwords that have been compromised it is possible to crack this encryption, especially if your password is a simple dictionary word. Now might be a good time for you all to go and reset your passwords on Twitter and even other high profile sites!

BlackBerry Z10 unboxing video

Z10 T

BlackBerry 10 has been on the cards for some time and the first device to hit the shops will be the all touch BlackBerry Z10. We were lucky enough to get an early review model and first impressions are fantastic. Both the hardware and the new OS from RIM are first class and I am pretty sure that millions of other users will soon agree with me.

BlackBerry 10 was officially announced across the world earlier today and the devices will be in store here in the UK tomorrow. With around 9 million UK BlackBerry subscribers already BlackBerry 10 is sure to grow the numbers, maybe not overnight but in time I am confident it will give the iPhone and Android handsets a run for there money.

You can catch a quick unboxing video of the BlackBerry Z10 below and stay tuned over the next few days for some more in depth videos.
