Green Technology to Improve Your Household

gogreen Many people have green aspirations – after all, who wouldn’t want to save the planet. Some people, however, allow worries associated with the potential costs of going green to keep them from realizing their eco-friendly goals. While some green products – like striking smart cars – are expensive, others are highly affordable. Instead of continuing to put off the adoption of green practice, start with something small and affordable, like adding some green technology to your home.

Home Security

You can stay green while keeping your home secure. According to www.securitycompanies.com, do-it-yourself home security systems are viable, green options, thanks to new technology. Companies like FrontPoint Security now offer systems that you can order online or via the phone – saving the gas-sucking drive a salesperson would have to make. You can even install these entirely wireless, drilling-free systems yourself. The billing process is even green with paperless statements.

Xbox at E3 2013

xbox-one-logo-wallpaperThis week starting 10th June is one of the, if not the ultimate week of gaming excitement that gamers across the globe get to enjoy. I’m talking of course about the yearly Electronic Entertainment Expo in LA and this is where we see the latest and greatest announcements from the industry leading companies in gaming.

This year was always going to be one of the best E3’sever simply because we were going to see the biggest console battle between two companies for 8 years ish, the battle is of course between Microsoft and Sony respectively. Both companies have announced their new next generation consoles, the Xbox One and PS4 and to be quite honest before the conferences the talk was all about how Microsoft could ‘redeem themselves’ after the shambles they created after their Xbox One reveal event a couple of weeks previous. To a point I think that Microsoft did redeem themselves by showing some incredible games running in real time on their new console, but the problem regarding the trading in of games and the ‘online check in’ still remains.

Hands on with the BlackBerry Swivel Holster for Q10

blackberry-leather-swivel-holster-for-q10

While belt holsters may not be everyone’s cup of tea they are the ultimate way of keeping your device secure and scratch free. Expansys sent me over the Swivel Holster for the BlackBerry Q10 recently and although I haven’t been using one with my Z10 – my Q10 has been proudly on my belt in the holster for the last week or so.

Like previous BlackBerry holsters this one is made from leather and contain the ‘special magnet’ which turns the Q10’s display off when you place it in the holster. The reverse happens when you remove the BlackBerry; the screen automatically will be on – Magic!

In terms of build quality you don’t get much better. The holster itself is crafted from genuine leather and the swivel belt clip feels solid as a rock. With the holster having the ‘swivel’ feature you can position your BlackBerry Q10 however you most find it easiest to access.

The holster is in stock at Expansys if you want some added protection and will set you back £34.99. It isn’t cheap but it is a premium accessory and money well spent if you are investing in a £500+ smartphone.

You can check out a quick hands on video of the holster below:

Lenovo-IdeaTab-A1000-A3000Lenovo has added a couple of new Android tablets to their line-up. Both are 7-inch tabs called the IdeaTab A1000 and A3000 respectively. Here’s a breakdown of specs:

The $200 Lenovo IdeaTab A1000:

  • Battery 3500mAh unit
  • 16GB, expandable with up to 32GB via microSD
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
  • 0.3 megapixel front camera for video chat and Dolby audio
  • White or black

Lenovo IdeaTab A3000 – Cost of which $229

  • Same 7-inch Display as the A1000
  • MediaTek 6575 single core Cortex-A9 CPU running at 1.2GHz
  • 1GB of RAM memory
  • 16GB, microSD slot supports cards of up to 64GB
  • 3500mAh battery
  • Rear 5 megapixel camera is present on board, along with the 0.3 megapixel front shooter

Lenovo are really churning out the devices this year and the price points are most agreeable. Combined with some decent budget specs these will provide a nice alternative to the Nexus 7.

Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One compared (Part 3)

IMG_3310 Over the past few weeks I have been looking at the HTC One and and Samsung Galaxy S4 and so far I’ve compared the camera performance and expressed my opinion regarding the screens used in each device.

This week I’m turning my attention to the audio performance, specifically the loud speakers and speaker phone. In this respect the winner is far more clear than the previous tests we’ve performed but let’s have a look.

HTC have made a pretty big deal of the speakers that they’ve added to the HTC One, there have been numerous TV commercials and posters to explain what Boomsound is all about. Boomsound is the name that HTC have given the speaker and audio technology they’ve used on the HTC One.

In essence there are two front-facing loudspeakers in the HTC One. These have large acoustic chambers to give a greater dynamic range and more punch while a build in amplifier can pump up to volume. The fact that they are forward-facing is a huge benefit too and furthermore, being stereo mans that watching movies or listening to music with the phone at an average viewing distance yields great sound performance.
