Samsung S8500 Wave Review

Wave-main

I first got my hands on the Samsung Wave all the way back in February when I was at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Back then it was pretty exciting, firstly because it was the first Samsung phone with the new Super AMOLED screen, and secondly because it has Samsungs own new operating system – BADA.

Five months on is the Wave still as exciting? I should say so but how does this new OS compare with other already established ones and also is the hardware up to scratch?

Read on to find out the verdict.

3 iPhone 4 deal to feature unlimited tethering

apple-iphone-4-now-available-for-pre-order-from-three-ukThree has confirmed that it will be the last of the remaining networks to reveal its iPhone 4 deal and it looks like it could be holding an ace – free tethering! Intrepid phone sleuths have got their hands on a Three carrier update and free iPhone 4 tethering evidence is lurking within it…

iPhone 4 tethering from Vodafone will cost you £5 a month for 500MB, £10 a month for 1.5GB and £15 a month for 3GB. Orange has announced iPhone tethering bundles starting at £5 a month and will give you 3GB worth of tethering data with its £75 a month, 24-month contract. O2 hasn’t detailed its iPhone 4 tethering deals yet but currently charges for the privilege if you’re rocking an iPhone 3GS.

iPhone replacements fail to materialise

iphone02 Staff in O2 are facing down unhappy customers attempting to claim replacements of the iPhone 3G 8GB model under O2’s £15 per month Insure scheme. All reseller channels claim the iPhone 3G 8GB is now completely out of stock, which means O2 cannot deliver on its Insure promise of a 24-hour iPhone replacement. The run-down of stock is a part of Apple’s rebalancing of its iPhone handset portfolio across different price points with launch of the iPhone 4 this week. Some customers have faced “weeks” of waiting, claimed staff.

"I am receiving complaints on a daily basis from angry customers who are waiting for a replacement. There is simply no stock available,” said one staffer. But an O2 spokesperson said: “O2 Insure offers customers a range of policies and, while we promise to assess returned claim forms within 24 hours, sending out a phone can take longer.

“In this specific case, O2 Insure has been waiting for a supply of replacement iPhones to be delivered which has now arrived. As a result O2 Insure will be contacting all customers affected by this delay within the next couple of days to confirm what happens next.”

It is understood Apple is discontinuing the iPhone 3G 8GB, and also the 3G S 16GB and 3G S 32GB models when stocks run down. It will instead launch a 3G S 8GB model.

Apple was unavailable for comment.

LG Viewty GT unboxing video

LG GT LG have just added to their popular Viewty range and have introduced the LG Viewty GT aka LG GT405.

The Viewty GT has a 3″ touchscreen display and is very much geared for web access and social networking. It includes Google Maps, Search and Mail, Skype, Facebook and Twitter right out of the box.

Other features include a 5 megapixel camera (minus flash), GPS, Quad band connectivity with 3G and HSDPA. About the only other thing missing is WiFi.

The GT has it’s own proprietary operating system but has an S-Class user interface overlay so it feels quite familiar and you’ll probably recognise it in the video below.

We’ll have a review for you soon but for now you can enjoy the unbox and demo below.

Samsung Galaxy S demo video

galaxy-video A few days ago I got my hands on the Samsung Galaxy S and recorded a brief unboxing video for you. Having used the handset a little more now I thought it was time to record another video showing of some of the features and installed applications.

So in the video below (presented in HD) we’ll have a look at the setting up a WiFi connection, the web browser, Google Maps, Gmail and SWYPE. For those of you that don’t know SWYPE is a different kind of text entry method, take a look at the video to see how that works.

James and I will be jointly working on the Galaxy S review so please do comment via the forum if you have an questions about the handset and if there is anything specific you want us to make sure we cover.

HTC Wildfire unboxing video

Wildfire-main We first Heard about the HTC Wildfire last month and James was lucky enough to be invited to the HTC press briefing and get his hands on the device even getting time to review a preview video.

Since then the Wildfire has been gathering interest and many now regard this as being the HTC Desire’s baby brother and when you see the HTC Wildfire it’s probably easy to understand why.

The HTC Wildfire is smaller than the Desire, having a 3.2″ QVGA display. There’s also a slower CPU but othe features are similar such as Android 2.1 with Sense UI, 5 Megapixel camera, WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth. On the face of it the HTC Wildfire might seem like HTC’s attempt to win the lower end of the Android handset market and at a little under £230 they seem to have the price about right but have not overly compromised the specification.

We’ll have a full review for you over the next week or so, we’re going to do something a little different with this review so watch this space! For now I hope you enjoy seeing a little more of the HTC Wildfire in the video below. I’ll also have a more detailed demo video for you soon too.
