What is #Nokiabox?

IMG00095-20100811-1748 Over the past 24 hours bloggers and journalists around the world have started to receive cryptic messages through newspapers from Nokia and WOMworld.

I too received a message through the London Evening Standard in the personal message section. The message simply reads: “Hi Matt Davis, Big things come in small packages. The times is coming when all will be revealed.” certainly cryptic enough!

So what does it mean? Well I’ve heard that other bloggers have now received a small package from Nokia but they are being tight lipped about the contents. My suspicion is that it’s something to do with their new N8 handset. Time will tell of course so watch this space for updates!

Google Holding Mobile Event Tomorrow

Google is going to be holding an event tomorrow in their San Francisco offices at 12PM PST (9PM British Time), where they are going to be “unveiling a couple of cool new mobile features”. The last time they held an event similar to this, they unveiled Google Navigation, which was a great addition to Android. So hopefully they will announce something on par with Google Nav.

The event could be the unveiling of the Google music service which we’ve been expecting since Google I/O. And if this is indeed what is being announced tomorrow, it will be the first step for Google to take a bite out of Apple’s music business, (No pun intended!) and could convert iPhone users locked in the iTunes universe to Android. However, I do not think that it will be the launch of Android 3.0. Mainly because it is to soon after 2.2 was announced at Google I/O.

There are some rumours floating around of them releasing the Nexus Two with Gingerbread 3.0, but again, this is probably not going to happen as we would of seen some sort of leak by now.

An Android Virus!

Sick Android!

It would appear that that some cheeky monkey has created an Android app that can steal cash!

The program poses as a media player but once installed starts sending premium rate text messages. The service being sent messages is operated by the malicious app’s creator, who scoops up the fees. Discovered by Kaspersky Labs, it is believed to be the first booby-trapped application for Android. In a security advisory Kaspersky said that the fake media player was most prevalent among Russian Android users. The risk to Android owners worldwide is believed to be low.

Rather a concern though.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager gets updated

bbdesktop-1

If you currently use the BlackBerry desktop manager for backing up your device etc you may want to download the updated version which will be compatible with BlackBerry 6, version 6.0.

At present the update is only for PC so if you are a Mac user you are going to have to wait.

As with previous versions of BlackBerry Desktop Software, you can manage applications to install BlackBerry Device Software-optional applications to your BlackBerry smartphone (like support for new languages), or remove any third-party apps you may not want to use anymore. Removing or adding an app is just a matter of clicking on the ‘+’ or ‘X’ buttons in the action column, and the Application Summary screen will be updated to reflect what will happen after you select ‘Apply’ for the changes.

Integrated BlackBerry® Media Sync is new in version 6.0. Here are some of the main features:

The First Trojan for Android is Discovered

Well it seems like Android is becoming a PC, as security firm Kaspersky detected a trojan going by the name of “Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a”. This trojan is downloaded  as an Android app and according to  Kaspersky it is the first known Android targeted trojan.

The trojan poses as a media player app but when the app is installed, it starts sending SMS’s to premium rate numbers without telling the user. As the creators of the trojan usually set up the numbers, they benefit from this scam. These types of trojans have been on mobile phones for years, but as far as I am aware, this is the first time it has been put on an Android device.

Kaspersky Lab is supposedly working on Android-specific antivirus software and plans to release it early next year. Even though there are antivirus apps already available in the Android Market, it was supposed to be unnecessary. But I guess it is only a matter of time before we see the 1990s war between the Mac and PC start all over again.
