Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini review

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini reviewIn much the same way as phones went touchscreen in the recent past, it’s now becoming a trend for mobile manufacturers to add ‘mini’ on the end of the model names, then put them through the most minor of changes and call it a day. The X10 mini however is probably the only phone that really deserves the title of ‘mini’ – Sony Ericsson has made some serious changes and ‘X10 Tiny’ would probably have been a more appropriate name.

Whatever they chose to call it, the design also reflects that it is very much the little brother of the original beefy X10. Sony Ericsson showed off both the X10 mini and the X10 mini pro back at MWC in February, where their tiny form factor combined with Android caught many people’s hearts. On the face of it, a small touchscreen may not seem to make sense for sake of usability, and so in the review we’ll find out amongst other things whether having a 2.55″screen and not many buttons is a good idea. The X10 mini is the first of the two to hit the market here in the UK, but can a tiny little phone make a large impression?

HTC Ace – let the rumours commence

htc-quietly-brilliant-logo1_thumb Don’t you just love the internet for it’s ability to spread rumour and speculation? There are always new phones and other devices rumoured and HTC seem to be running a close second behind Apple when it comes to speculation about new and as-yet unannounced handsets.

About a month ago someone messaged me through the site to say that they’d heard that there was a new device coming from HTC called the HTC Ace. They asked if I knew anything about it, at the time I knew nothing and having asked HTC, drew a blank.

We forgot about the Ace for a little while, device names get mentioned all the time and frequently come to nothing. Then about a week or so ago a few more questions about the Ace came my way. More enquiries to HTC but still nothing confirmed, no surprise there.

So this is what we have heard about the HTC Ace, which I must point out is pure rumour at the moment but I’ve had it from a few unrelated sources.

Question: What do you get if you cross the HTC Evo with the HTC Incredible?

Answer: The HTC Ace!

The HTC Ace will be a new Android 3.0 powered smartphone, running a dual-core snapdragon CPU. It will be a large touchscreen device, 4.3″ AMOLED like the HTC HD2 or EVO but styled more like the HTC Incredible. An 8 megapixel camera with flash. GPS and all the other nice bits that we’ve come to expect from an HTC Handset.

Obviously we’ll try to find out more and will have our ear very close to the ground and we’ll post more as we get it!

Samsung S3370 unboxing video

S3370The Samsung S3370 is part of their Corby range but this new low end touch screen device is now packing 3G so web browsing etc wont be quite as frustrating.

Running Samsung’s, now so familiar, TouchWiz UI the S3370 will be a low cost, lightweight basic phone although it does support a vast range of features including email, Bluetooth, 3G, music player, 1.3mp camera with smile detection and integrated social media applications such as Facebook and MySpace.

As I write this I am not sure how much the Samsung S3370 will retail for but I would imagine it will be inline with previous Corby phones and therefore on PAYG should sell for around the £75.00 mark.

Lets unbox and see what we get for our money.

giffgaff goody bags half price

Screen shot 2010-07-05 at 16.26.57

If you have not heard of giffgaff before then now is the time to listen up. To cut a long story short giffgaff are a UK mobile operator (runs off the O2 network) who have some rather attractive deals permanently and at the moment things are even better as their goody bags are half price.

This is how it works. Order a free sim from them. Buy credit and then buy a goody bag. At the moment £5.00 will get you 100 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet. How about that for good value.

I have been using giffgaff for a couple of months now as my review device sim card and have had no issues with them at all. Matt is the same. He has a giffgaff sim in his iPad. Why wouldn’t you for those prices. Online topping up is simple. Their website is user friendly and easy to navigate.

Head on over to giffgaff and get yourself a sim card.

The HTC Vision

HTC Vision

There is a certain photo floating around the internet now and it is of the forthcoming HTC Vision. We must remember that HTC have made no official announcement about this device so I expect that the photo we see here will be a prototype of the Vision.

What we can tell you though is that HTC will release a device like this in the future. We get to here secret stuff here at tracyandmatt. Shall I tell you what else is coming soon from HTC? No, that would spoil things!

Anyway, the Vision looks to be a great device. Essentially a HTC Desire with a slide out QWERTY keyboard and we all know how good HTC are at those. Just look at the Touch Pro 2. That one still has the best keyboard to date if you ask me.

Keep your eyes peeled for more news on the HTC Vision in the future. We are in for an exciting quarter 3 from HTC!

Samsung Galaxy S (i9000) Review

Samsung Galaxy S Review main

The Galaxy S is without doubt the highest specced device Samsung has produced to date. With it running Android 2.1 and with an expected upgrade to 2.2 in the coming months it is perfectly placed in a market where the Android platform is growing on a daily basis.

With recent Android flagship devices being released by the likes of HTC and Motorola and also the new Apple iPhone 4 is the Samsung Galaxy S a contender for top place?

Only one way to find out and that is to read on.

My T-Mobile BlackBerry – an update

t-mobile_logo_large If you listen to the Mobile Tech Addict podcast that I co-host you may have heard me talking about the problems I had with the T-Mobile BlackBerry that I bought Tracy for her birthday. It’s at times like these that I’m glad that I make most purchases on my credit card. For those of you not in the know here’s a quick recap:

I bought Tracy a BB 8520 for her birthday from my local T-Mobile store. I bought it on the 7th June and put it away for Tracy’s birthday on the 17th. Come the 17th I gave Tracy her gift but within a few minutes she realised that it was faulty, the optical trackpad didn’t work. So we took the BB back to our local T-Mobile store to get it exchanged. However the store manager refused to replace the handset as he said we’d had it more than 7 days and that I would have to deal with RIM to get it replaced under warranty. Despite explaining to him what my consumer rights were and that I was fully entitled to a refund or replacement he still refused and asked me to leave the store!

Froyo 2.2 OTA update this morning

thumb_tall_frf91-ota

Froyo madness never ends.  Woke up this morning to an Android 2.2 OTA update. It’s another very small update (900k) and if you can’t wait for it to come OTA you can grab the update direct from Google HERE.  Not sure exactly what this has done to improve the OS but rumour has it they have jiggled around with the Wireless N feature.

I have noticed that the marketplace has been fixed and I can finally download all the apps I purchased.

As soon as we know more, or have a link to a version for non-stock users, we’ll sing out. [Handy-FAQ.de (in German), XDA Developers]
