Emma’s doing the Race For Life for Cancer Research!

Hi everyone! I’m just going to take a small detour away from reviews for a moment to ask you all for you help!

I took part in Cancer Research’s Race For Life through in Edinburgh last year after finding out that my Auntie was diagnosed with lung cancer. The brilliant news is that she pretty much has been given the all clear! But by taking part in this event made me realise how important it is to continue supporting Cancer Research

The Race for Life was great fun to take part in and an absolutely inspiring event that I was proud to be a part of. So my friends (who took part in this with me last year) and I are going to do it again this year in Glasgow on the 6th June.

So, please dig deep and help us raise as much as we can by clicking on the link below and sponsoring what you can!

Thanks everyone

Emma x

Is this Windows Mobile Seven?

The guys over at PPCGEEKS have announced the below spec which they say is the closest info yet know about Windows Mobile 7.

Zune Phone

Is this what it may look like?

-The User Interface is based upon codename “METRO”. It will be very similar to the Zune HD User Interface with a complete revamp of the “Start” screen. The UI is “Very Clean”, “Soulful” and “Alive”
-Unfortunately there will be no Flash support at the get go as there was not enough time to implement these features.
-Windows Phone 7 will only support application installation through service based delivery. (i.e Marketplace). Application installation via storage card will not be possible.
– No Multi-Task support. Applications will “Pause” when in the background, however will support notifications via push notifications.
-Marketplace will now support “try before you buy” as well as an API
-No NETCF backwards compatibility. This means the original rumour of no backward compatibility for applications holds to be true. That being said, there are high hopes of porting the NetCF to the newer platform easily.
-Microsoft is confident that devices will be ready by September 2010
-Full Zune Integration
-Windows Mobile Device Centre will no longer be used. Zune software to take over syncing via PC.
-OEM Interfaces will not be allowed to run on the device. Say goodbye to Sense UI / SPB Mobile Shell / Point UI / Infinity, etc, etc
-Full XBOX Gaming Integration (Gamer tag, achievements, friends, avatars, merchandising, etc)
-Full support for social networking

Now the Zune is not a bad bit of kit but do I want the same UI on my phone with no option to change it – Hell No!

None of the above has officially come from Microsoft and if it turns out that this is true then I think I may give up all together with Windows Mobile. There must be more to it that this?

James and Matt do podcasts

mta-logo If you have not heard us recently on the mobiletechaddicts podcast then don’t worry as you will be able to listen in future. As from today, both Matt and myself (James) are officially now co-hosts of the MTA podcast along with regulars Gareth Myles and Andy Lee.

So this means that most weeks you will be able to hear the four of us discussing the previous weeks mobile news and more than likely also talking about any good handsets we have been playing with.

To download or subscribe to the podcast click here.  In addition, if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch then the new mobiletechaddicts app is also available. Click here for more details.

While you are over at mobiletechaddicts.com you may as well check out their competition to win one of two Bluetooth headsets.  How about that for a bonus!

Competition reminder!

DSCN0693

The new podcast is out and we are looking for some folks to win these headsets. Send me a picture of you listening to the podcast. When at Mobile World Congress I shall ask the coolest and most prominent person I can find to choose their favourite two photos (To be honest it will probably be the most attractive booth babe.) The two photos chosen will win! Simples.

You can send your photo to [email protected]. Entries should be in by midnight on 17/02/10. I will be posting all photos received so keep them clean 🙂

Best of luck!

HTC HD2 extended battery pre-order

hd2-extended We mentioned the extended battery for the HTC HD2 quite some time ago and you may also recall that we said it would come with a funky kickstand. Images have surfaced on the web and our friends over at Clove Technology have added the product to their site and are offering pre-order.

The battery is 2300mAh, almost double that of the original HD2 battery. It’s supplied with a cover that has its own ‘kickstand’ allowing you to sit the HD2 on your desk in a landscape orientation. Personally I think it’s a pretty ugly looking thing that makes the handset rather chunky but I suppose it depends on how you plan to use your handset.

If you fancy picking one up for your HTC HD2 then head over to Clove and pre-order today. Stock is due in March.

It is always good to have a big battery in a smartphone, so that you can work for longer without having to charge the phone. Larger batteries often mean a larger overall size, which isn’t for everyone.

However, sometimes the need outweighs the shape, aesthetics and weight of the product.  So if this is the case for you and you own a HTC HD2, this extended 2300mAh battery will be ideal.

An official extended battery for the HTC HD2, this 2300mAh battery comes complete with a replacement back cover, that has a kickstand (allowing you to stand the device up – perfect if watching a film).

Vodafone’s Twitter attack

voda

Vodafone is looking into a ‘severe breach of rules’ by staff after an offensive ‘tweet’ was posted on its official Twitter account, Vodafone UK.

The offensive ‘tweet’ was posted at 15:47 and deleted shortly afterwards. Since then, the operator has sent out numerous apologies to its followers on the social networking site. Vodafone reacted quickly to the breach and posted an apology, just under an hour after the original post, which said: ‘We’re really sorry. A severe breach of rules by staff in out building, dealing with that internally. Please keep your faith in us.’

Only this week the operator was used as an example of a company using Twitter for good customer services by BBC programme Working Lunch. Followers of Vodafone UK on Twitter started ‘re-tweeting’ and asking Vodafone what had happened and have speculated that a disgruntled employee created the post.

One follower said: ‘Have I missed something???’

A Vodafone spokesman said: ‘This afternoon an employee posted an obscene message from the official Vodafone UK Twitter profile. The employee has been suspended immediately and we have started an internal investigation. This was not a hack and we apologise for any offence the tweet may have caused.’

LG GW620 (LG Etna) unboxing video

We first broke the news of this new Android powered LG handset back in September 2009 when John managed to unearth some photos of the handset while it was still referred to as the LG Etna. The trail turned cold on the Etna for a while until later in 2009 and at the beginning of 2010 when the handset was announced as reportedly coming to Virgin and T-mobile in the UK and the name here would be the LG GW620.

The LG GW620

The LG GW620

At the moment it looks like the GW620 is going to be exclusive to Virgin and T-Mobile, I’ve not seen anyone offering it SIM-free as yet. (Feel free to tell me if you know any different!) The GW620 looks like a decent handset and the most striking thing for me is the quality of the QWERTY keyboard, it’s really on-par with the HTC Touch Pro2 in that department; large individual keys, good layout and 5 rows – all very impressive.

I’ve had a quick play with this handset already since recording the video below, and quite like it but there are a few niggles. Being only Android 1.5 seems like a real shame when 2.0 and 2.1 handsets fill the rest of the market. 1.5 may have been ok when the handset first surfaced last year but now it’s bit behind the times! There are a few other things to tell you about it but you’ll have to wait for my review! 🙂

Smartphone Survey

A slightly different post, but I am hoping all you smartphone and technology fans could assist a friend of mine in a study.

Currently completing a dissertation at Bournemouth University, he is investigating the relationship between innovation and competitive advantage, in relation to manufacturers of smartphones, with particular focus on HTC.

Whilst he has undertaken a study into secondary data, he does need primary data to be able to draw conclusions and recommendations (this is where you come in!)

I kindly ask that you help him out by completing a very simple and pain free questionnaire which can be accessed HERE.

The study is quite interesting and in a couple of months time, when the study is complete he should be able to send a full copy of the report, that you can read, should you wish. He passes his thanks on in advance.

Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs [Combi Pack] – Review

‘Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs’, or ‘Cloudy’ for short, is an animated film from Sony based on a much loved children’s book.

You may think that a Blu-ray film review is a little unusual for us, and you’d be right. This is the first time we’ve done such a thing but I thought it might make a refreshing change for a Friday afternoon feature here on the site and something that, if popular, we’d like to do more often! So it’s important that you let us have your feedback. You can think of this as our ‘Something for the weekend’ segment.

Matt

cloudy_bd_2ds

It features the voice talents of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Andy Samberg, Bruce Campbell, Mr T and more.

The movie tells the story of young Flint Lockwood, who’s only wish is to become a great inventor. After the death of his supportive mother Flint is left alone with his emotionally distant father and focuses his energies into his inventions, which don’t quite work out as he’d intended them to.

BlackBerry Storm2 on T-Mobile

If you wanted a BlackBerry Storm2 but didn’t want to get one on Vodafone then their is good news for you.

Storm 2 999

BlackBerry Storm2

T

T-Mobile

The Storm2 will be available on T-Mobile UK sometime this month! Vodafone had the initial exclusive on the BlackBerry Storm2, much the same as with the original Storm but that must have come to an end. With BlackBerry sales still growing I wonder if any of the other networks will take it up?

T-Mobile more than doubled its BlackBerry base in 2009, shifting 10,000 units per week in Q4. It told dealers last week the number of T-Mobile customers using BlackBerry devices had increased by 125 per cent during 2009.

More than 2,900 BlackBerry handsets were activated on the T-Mobile network on Christmas day alone!
