Nokia Lumia 1520 unboxing video

lumia-1520Nokia have managed to produce an extremely popular range of Windows Phone devices with the Lumia brand and the Lumia 1020 certainly drew a lot of attention last year when that launched with its whopping 40MP camera.

Eager to break in to that interesting “phablet” market, Nokia announced the Lumia 1520 late in 2013. Since then the 1520 has turned out to be pretty popular for those wishing to combine the size of a tablet with the functionality of a phone while not wanting to carry two devices.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 has a glorious 6-inch full HD IPS LCD screen that really does look the business. Couple that with the 2.2GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB RAM and 16GB of on-board storage, the specification starts to add up and throwing in a 20MP camera doesn’t hurt either!

As always, I’m kicking off with the unboxing and hands-on video before we crack on with the review.

Special thanks to Clove Technology for our review unit.

The Nokia Lumia 929 hitting in December

lumia_929_leakAnother Windows Phone looks like it will be making its way into store fairly soon. Unconfirmed reports of the Nokia Lumia 929 have been floating around for a while, however, this leak seems a little more concrete the the previous ones.

A new photo of the unannounced Windows Phone was leaked by Falorin in a forum  at WPCentral. The device looks to be white and has a 2510mAh battery. In addition the 929 is expected to feature a 5-inch, 1080p display, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a Snapdragon 800 processor, and the same 20MP camera found on other Nokia Windows Phone models. The rumour is that this will hit shelves in mid December.

Accessing your favourite apps is now even faster with an additional 3rd column of user defined live tiles on the home screen. Getting more productive

”The application and graphics performance provided by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor allows Nokia to continue creating new and innovative imaging experiences for consumers.” said Raj Talluri, senior vice president of product management for Qualcomm technologies, Inc. “The advanced integration level in the Snapdragon 800 processor means less individual components inside the phone translating to lower power consumption and smaller overall motherboard design, this lets Nokia to package all Windows Phone experiences into a beautifully designed product.”

Telling stories better on a large screen

With its 20MP camera and ZEISS optics, Nokia PureView remains at the forefront of the 1520 experience. The 1520 includes Nokia’s latest imaging innovations such as Nokia Camera which integrates the most popular imaging modes – ProCam, SmartCam, and video – into one seamless picture-taking experience. These features are enhanced by exciting new applications such as Nokia Storyteller and Refocus. For the first time PureView imaging meets HERE maps with the launch of Nokia Storyteller merging the two signature Lumia experiences together. Re-live memories in a new, dynamic, and interactive way that integrates pictures with HERE location information into a chronological photographic journey on a map. Zooming out of a picture reveals tagged points of interest and contact information, user reviews and even driving directions. Viewing the images on the map makes memories truly come alive with auto playback of video, animated images and sequential movement in a still picture.

Conor Pierce, VP of UK & Ireland for Nokia said, “The Nokia Lumia 1520 is a stunning device, everyone who tries it instantly falls in love with it which is why it has already received great reviews. Aside from its unrivalled camera I also see it being hugely popular in the B2B space, where productivity really matters.”

Windows Phone announces the arrival of Instagram

instagram-profiles-now-online-1The arrival of Instagram, which has more than 150 million users around the world, brings one of the world’s most popular social photo apps to what many critics have called the world’s best smartphone cameras.

Instagram can transform everyday moments into shareable works of art. Just grab a picture from your Photos Hub, choose a filter to transform its look and feel, then post to Instagram (or Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Foursquare). As with many other Windows Phone apps, Instagram for Windows Phone will have a Live Tile which updates with data on the Start screen as well as support for fast-resume.

With up to 500 apps added each day, the Windows Phone store has more than 190,000 apps and around 90 per cent of the top 20 ranked apps across all platforms. Windows Phone is also the fastest-growing platform among the leading operating systems according to recent analyst data.

Instagram for Windows Phone highlights include:

  • The full set of Instagram filters including XPro-II, Earlybird, Rise, Amaro, Hudson, Lo-fi, Sutro, Toaster, Brannan, Inkwell, Walden, Hefe, Nashville, 1977, and more
  • Ability to like and comment on other people’s photos and videos
  • Linear and radial tilt-shift blur effects for extra depth of field
  • Unlimited uploads

Instagram leads a wave of popular apps now available on Windows Phone, including Blippar, Vine, 4oD, Angry Birds Star Wars II and Asphalt 8: Airborne.

Nokia Lumia 1020 unboxing video

Nokia Lumia 1020 unboxingSince its announcement in July of this year, the Nokia Lumia 1020 has created quite a stir. There’s pretty much only one reason for this; the 41 megapixel camera.

At 41 megapixels (38MP effective) not only is the sensor on the Nokia Lumia 1020 the highest pixel count on a mobile phone, but it’s among the highest pixel counts of any camera on the market and even many high-end Digital SLR cameras don’t go that high.

So what of the rest of the 1020, have there been huge compromises elsewhere in order to accommodate that huge sensor? On the face of the answer is no. The rest of the phone specification seems to be pretty good too with a large AMOLED screen, 1.5GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB RAM and a host of other to of the line features, if there are compromises it’s not that obvious.

In the unboxing video below you’ll get to see what accessories come with the Lumia 1020, have a tour around the hardware and I’ll take a look at the OS as well as having a quick play with that amazing camera.

HTC 8S Review

HTC 8S Review The smartphone marketplace is crowded to say the least, but when Microsoft launched Windows Phone 8 it brought about something different than the rivals already had (iOS, android and blackberry) and although Microsoft partnered with Nokia to create smartphones and exclusive applications for Nokia phones, they decided in their wisdom to make HTC their official brand/launch partner.

And I have one of the devices in question for review, the Windows Phone HTC 8S which is the lower end device that HTC launched alongside its windows phone flagship the 8X.

Want to find out more about this little device and whether it can compete successfully in the marketplace? Well then please do read on, but first please take a look at the HTC 8S unboxing video from Matt.

HTC Windows Phone 8S unboxing video

HTC Windows Phone 8S It’s been a while since I last did an unboxing video so I was pretty pleased to get hold of HTC’s latest phone, the HTC Windows Phone 8S.

While the name may be a bit of a mouthful the phone itself isn’t too much of a handful with a 4″ display and carefully curved back in a textured finish this is a phone that’s easy and comfortable to hold.

HTC have made this one available in a variety of colours and this red one that we are looking at looks quite smart and stands out from the crowd. It’s quite festive too!

The 8S is the first Windows Phone 8 phone that I’ve had the chance to use in earnest so I’m looking forward to the next few weeks of testing. Initial impressions are that it runs really smoothly and rapid at most tasks despite the processor clock speed seemingly a little slow, on paper at least.

Check out the video below which covers the basics of the hardware before delving in and reviewing some of the OS and UI features.

HTC Titan Review

HTC Titan ReviewThe Titan is one half of the newest phones released by HTC with the latest version of Windows Phone 7 but this is the most interesting device. Mainly because of the gargantuan 4.7 inch screen, a fast 1.5 GHz processor and Windows Phone 7.5. There is no doubt that it certainly impressive on paper but how does it perform in real life? Has HTC been too ambitious with the screen size? Should you choose the Titan over anything else? Read on to find out!
