Samsung launches mango flavoured Omnia W

omniaw2011-08-03800pxThe Mango update for Windows Phone 7 has been on the cards for a while, but second generation devices which actually ship with the Mango update preinstalled are not available quite yet. The Omnia W from Samsung is their first Mango device, which also features some updated hardware. A 1.4GHz processor coupled with 512MB of RAM is under the hood, topped off with a nice 3.7″ Super AMOLED display. One of Mango’s headline features is support for video calling, so the Omnia W has a VGA front facing camera as well as a 5MP snapper on the back, all wrapped in a slim 10.9mm  casing – if you’re not one for the giant phones coming out lately then this may be worth a look, available later this year.

In case you’ve forgotten about what the Mango update brings to the Windows Phone table, take a read of this breakdown. The full press release is after the break.

SAMSUNG LAUNCHES THE OMNIA W

New device will be the first from Samsung to feature the latest Microsoft Windows Phone release

London, UK – September 26, 2011 – Samsung Electronics today announced the launch of the Samsung Omnia W, its first smartphone based on the latest version of Microsoft’s Windows Phone, 7.5 or ‘Mango’. The Omnia W boasts a Super AMOLED display and a wealth of content and social communication options thanks to Microsoft’s various content Hubs.

“We are extremely excited about the Samsung Omnia W. As our first device to feature the latest Windows Phone update, we have ensured that it has something for everyone whether they are using it for personal or work purposes; from the superb screen quality to the huge range of apps and multimedia available,” said Simon Stanford, Managing Director, Mobile, Samsung UK and Ireland. “We are proud to partner with Microsoft and are committed to providing customers with a portfolio of devices that meet every need.”

The Omnia W sports a minimalist contemporary design with a stylish metallic finish. Its 3.7″ Super AMOLED display makes it perfect for watching movies and TV or playing games and looking at apps. The 1.4GHz processor and integrated 14.4Mbps HSPA connectivity mean high-speed data browsing so that videos and pictures can be instantly shared with friends and family.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, Mango, has been developed to offer customers an easy, intelligent and socially connected smartphone experience. Owners can easily connect and share experiences with their friends using a variety of communication mediums, while a superior Web browsing experience is further enhanced with the integration Internet Explorer9 and Bing. Mango’s unique user interface lays out applications in mosaic ‘Live Tiles’ providing the benefits of a user environment usually associated with a larger display within the portability of a smartphone screen.

Six specialised Microsoft applications provide an engaging content and communication experience. The Windows Phone People Hub is integrated with social networking services built-in Windows Live, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, so people can stay in touch with their friends and family wherever they are.

Office Hub makes productivity easier whilst on-the-go. Customers can access Windows Live Sky Drive, which provides 25GB of free storage and means documents and media files can be easily stored and accessed anywhere. It’s also easy to create and edit documents thanks to mobile-optimised versions of Microsoft Office Excel, Word and PowerPoint, and use One Note to share and store voice memos, images and text-based notes.

Access to over 30,000 apps is available from Windows Phone Marketplace, and the Picture Hub, Music & Video Hubs (powered by Microsoft Zune) and Game Hubs are all integrated into the device so people can enjoy the full benefits of social gaming through Xbox live, such as chatting with their friends whilst playing.

The Omnia W also benefits from Samsung’s exclusive apps including Samsung AllShare, socontent can be easily transferred between the device and HDTV’s, monitors and digital cameras. A Video Call app means customers can set up video calls with friends and family; Mini Diary lets them create a personalised digital journal using photos and videos they’ve captured on the phone’s 5MP camera; the Now 2.0 provides them with the latest news; and RSS Time allows RSS feeds for newspapers, magazines and blogs to be downloaded onto the device, providing the option to share interesting articles via email or Facebook.

The Omnia W will be available in the UK later this year. For multimedia content and more detailed information, please visit www.samsungmobilepress.com/.
