Skype now for Windows Mobile Smartphone

Yesterday saw a new Beta Version (v2.2) of Skype launched.

Skype

Smartphone users will be pleased to learn that this version supports Windows Mobile Smartphone and that some 120 new devices are now supported.

Skype For Smartphone

There are a few limitations with this version, for example, at the moment, Skype calls only come through the loudspeaker or a headset. Skype say that they are working on this, but in the meantime, you’ll need to use a headset for the best audio quality.

So far it seems to work perfectly well on my TyTN but it’s early days!

Check out the Skype download page HERE.

ETEN G500 review

Nedge2k over at MSMobileNews has just posted a great review of the ETEN G500.

ETEN G500

The ETEN G500 is was one of the first devices to include a built in GPS unit.

In what will be the last review nedge2k does for MSMobileNews he has this to say of the G500:

“The first thing that strikes you about this device when you get it out of the box is its size. When you see pictures of it, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s huge when in reality it’s a pretty average size. Packed inside the G500 you can find an SiRF Star III GPS chipset (with TMC), 400Mhz Samsung CPU, 1.3MP camera, 2.8” QVGA TFT touchscreen, Bluetooth 2.0, Quadband GSM, 128MB of user memory (256MB on the G500+), FM radio (with RDS!) and a miniSD slot.”

“This phone is one hell of a mixed bag; so many good points but at the same time, quite a few bad ones. It has some really great hardware but then gets let down by poor build quality. It has handy, well thought out applications that get let down by what I hope are just mistakes/oversights.”

HTC P4350 (aka HTC Herald) opens the wrong way?

I was having a conversation with a software developer the other day and he mentioned something about the HTC P4350 that, while I’d noticed, I hadn’t really considered.

    HTC P4350

Take a look at the picture above. Those of you with an HTC TyTN or Orange M3100 notice anything ‘strange’? The keyboard on the HTC P4350 opens in the other direction to every other sliding keyboard device from HTC.

“So what!?” I hear you say. Well from a developer point of view you can no longer make the assumption that when the keyboard is open and the device is in landscape that the keyboard is to the left of the screen, now it could be to the right too!

So should anyone else care? Well as I look at the device I think that the keyboard opening to the right is going to suit me better. As a left handed person it will be easier for me to slide open with one hand.

Is there a good reason for this change or is it just because the designer at HTC is left handed? Any thoughts?

    More O2 XDA Flame photos

The XDA Flame is set to be the next VGA Windows Mobile PocketPC to be released.

    O2 XDA Flame

    XDA Flame Side on

This is a fairly large device which looks similar in size to the HTC Universal, but you may also notice the lack of slide-out keyboard.

The TV out connector sounds interesting, I’d like to see PockekPC screen out put to TV, this could make an interesting device for Powerpoint presentations.

The Flame is a 3G PocketPC Phone with a generous 3.6″ VGA display powered by NVIDIA’s GoForce 5500 GPU for next-generation mobile graphics. I cant wait to see software that can puch this 3D graphics!

    O2 XDA Flame Specification

  • 2.0 Mega Pixel camera

More HTC Cavalier photos and release date

There seems to be something of a buzz surrounding the device that is slated to replace the HTC Excalibur, the HTC Cavalier.

The guys over at Mobinaute have managed to get their hands on a Cavalier and have taken plenty of photos.

    HTC Cavalier

The HTC Cavalier is a bit larger than the HTC Excalibur and the design is more angular and less ‘curvy’ than the Excalibur.

According to Mobinaute the HTC Cavalier will be on sale, in France at least, in March 2007. That’s are earlier release date than we anticipated.

    HTC Cavalier Specification

  • 400MHz Samsung CPU
  • Quad-Band (GSM/GPRS/EDGE) with UMTS (2100/850/1900), HSDPA

    Crossbow on Orange SPV M3100?

It was only a few weeks ago that the first screen shots of Microsoft’s new Mobile OS, codenamed Crossbow, were leaked on the internet. Now according to this thread on XDA-Developers there are HTC Hermes devices out there running the new OS.

    Crossbow on M3100

These low quality photos, presumably taken from another camaera phone, appear to show an Orange SPV M3100 running Crossbow. This has prompted a lot of discussion about the likelyhood of Orange releasing the a ROM update to customers or supplying newer M3100’s with Crossbow pre-installed.

I think it’s extremely unlikely that Orange will provide this as an update for existing M3100 owners, this isnt a simple ROM update, it’s a whole new OS and would be subject to different licensing argreements etc. It’s more likely that the device shown in the photos is a test platform for the new OS.

    HTC Vox photos leaked

File this one under rumour at the moment but images of the HTC Vox have appeared on the web.

    HTC Vox

You’ll no doubt have noticed that no only does the HTC Vox have a slide out keyboard similar in layout to the HTC Magician but there is also an regular Smartphone style keypad on the front. This is the first hybrid device from HTC.

    HTC VOX?

While we realise that the image above is a computer generated concept it would appear that the proportions aren’t quite right if we are to believe the information we have. It’s claimed that the screen will be 240 x 320 but looking at the image this ratio seems more like a square screen.

    HTC Vox Specification

  • Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone
  • Quad Band EDGE/GSM (No 3G!)
  • 2.4″ QVGA(?) 240 x 320 screen
  • 96Mb RAM, 128Mb ROM
  • Bluetooth 2
  • USB and WiFi
  • Qwerty keyboard
  • 2MP Camera
  • 5 way jog bar
  • Information via Coolsmartphone, via MSMobiles, via ce4arab.com.
