Apple limiting what Apps can use GPS on the new iPhone

Having launched the new iPhone and with the new SDK on the way Apple have added in a couple of clauses to curb what developers can do with the GPS built into the new iPhone.  According to Electronista the agreement states that the GPS cannot be used for real time navigation applications.

Looks like Apple are planning to keep the navigation pie all to themselves.  TomTom are known to be working on an application, so the question is do they have an exclusive agreement?

So, what’s the use of GPS if you can’t get real time data out of it?  I think we’ll see the most innovative GPS aware applications coming from areas outside of navigation.  Some sort of "what are people listening to near me" type of app is going to be a good bet!

    QIK for iPhone coming soon

image Qik has a video showing off a demo app for the iPhone, bringing the popular video streaming service to the Apple platform. The iPhone isn’t designed to record video, but Qik has not only made it possible to record, but also stream it to their lifecasting site, where people can watch your handiwork. Much like the video apps from Sling and Flixwagon, Qik appears to be running an unofficial app on a jailbroken iPhone. The demo looks very plain, in terms of UI, but the video streams to the Qik site like any other phone client. Qik expects to get alpha versions of the software out soon.

Apple WWDC Keynote 2008 in 60 Seconds

image Unless you were a bit sad like me and listened to the live audio stream of the full 2 hours of the Steve Jobs keynote on Monday night, you might want to spare 60 seconds to watch this.

Crunchgear have condensed every interesting item in the keynote into this brilliant video for us to enjoy, 2 hours into 60 seconds missing out all the flannel and bull. Wish I had waited for this before torturing myself on Monday.

Vito SMS-Chat now with threaded SMS and Smilies

VITO Technology releases a new version of SMS-Chat. SMS-Chat lets you organize your SMS correspondence into threaded SMS conversations. New version now has smilies. The telephone numbers, hyperlinks or e-mails that you receive in SMS are now more usable as you can simply click it and the necessary application with the data will be called out then. Minor bugs have been removed. SMS-Chat users who liked the bright skin will now have an opportunity to choose the skin they’ve got used to.

    VITO Technology SMS Chat

Chatting at present is a ritual which is hardly possible without numerous smilies showing emotions that people feel and shortenings what stand for so many words. So as SMS-Chat is one of the messengers for chatting we decided to give its users an opportunity to vary their texting with different emoticons. New version of SMS-Chat supports cool animated smilies.

The feature that everybody really likes in the previous version of SMS-Chat is the ability to click hyperlinks to open in browser, to click phone number to place a call and e-mail to send a letter. Now this feature has become even cooler. In previous version you were to click the SMS to call out menu buttons afterward choose the needed action. As far as the new version you only need to click the highlighted text and SMS-Chat will automatically detect whether it should give a ring, e-mail or open the link in the browser. A nice touch, isn’t it?

    SMS-Chat is available for $14.95 at http://iwindowsmobile.com.

SMS-Chat supports English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Norwegian, Danish, Portuguese, and Russian.

MPs urge action as spooky caller ID-faking services hit UK

image Communications watchdogs have today been pressed by MPs to investigate a new service that allows people to fool caller ID systems into displaying a fake number, amid fears it will be abused by ID fraudsters and other conmen.

It’s thought such trickery is currently legal in the UK. The Liberal Democrats have called on regulators to act however, claiming the availablity of such services in the UK could make it even easier to fleece the public and invade privacy.

    T-Mobile disconnects WAP from July

image UK operator T-Mobile is disconnecting its CSD-WAP subscribers from July 9th, suggesting customers might like to switch to GPRS or something a little more 20th century, and disposing of pay-per-minute internet access.

Circuit Switched Data (CSD) was how mobile phones accessed data services in the early days, or at least the technology that allowed them to try. Technically equivalent to a dial-up modem, it allows speeds of up to 9.6Kb/sec, ideal for downloading the latest news and reviews from the Mobile Internet.
