Verizon merges with Alltel now America’s largest network
Verizon (Vodafone owns 45% of Verizon Wireless) will complete its $28.1 billion takeover of Alltel on January 9. This will add more than Alltel’s 13 million customers to Verizon’s 66 million to create the largest mobile network in the US. Both Verizon and Alltel use Qualcomm’s CDMA technology which will hopefully avoid the problems that Sprint encountered when it merged with Nextel in 2005. That merger began the rapid decline of Sprint when it failed to successfully integrate Sprint’s CDMA network and Nextel’s IDEN network.
