The Chromebook Pixel

two_arrows_2For the last few years the Chomebooks have been simple and cheap solutions for those wanting an internet experience, instead of all the trimmings of a Windows based laptop. Google has recently unveiled their Chromebook Pixel, a high end Chomebook that combines stellar screen technology with the cloud centric operating system based around the popular Chrome browser. It’s an attractive chuck of technology and something of an experiment when you consider the competition out there.

Google have stated they are not interesting in seeing this machine fly off the shelves, instead they want to raise the bar of what a Chromebook can be considered to be. The Pixel has some decent specs, maybe not as much as you would expect considering the price tag of £1,049.00 however it does compare more to the Macbook Air than a more traditional laptop.

Chromebook Pixel Specification:

  • Gorilla Glass multi-touch super high-res screen
  • 2560 x 1700 at 239 PPI
  • Intel CoreT i5 processor (Dual Core 1.8GHz)
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000 (Integrated)
  • 4GB RAM
  • 32GB solid state drive (64GB on LTE model)
  • Up to 5 hours of active use (59 Wh battery)
  • Integrated 720p HD camera
  • 12.85" display with a 3:2 aspect ratio
  • 3.35 lbs / 1.52 kg
  • One terabyte Google Drive cloud storage for three years

There are a couple of concerns for the machine. Fristly, two USB 2.0 ports, no 3.0 that can be found on Samsung’s most recent revision. 32gb/64gb SSD pales in comparison to the 128gb on a Macbook Air, whilst the 1tb of Google Drive storage helps ease a little of the loss one can’t quite commit to this being as terrific Apple’s option. Chrome OS isn’t quite there yet, an it isn’t even like comparing Android in it’s infancy to Apple iOS. The Chromebook’s OS is trying to take on Windows 8 and OSX, two incredibly mature operating systems that are at the top of their game.

It does however have a multi-touch screen, is lighter, and a screen that will be nothing short of jaw dropping. Chrome OS will have Google’s 6 weekly updates and you can expect this OS to mature as quickly as, if not more quickly than, Android over the next year.

I want one.
