O2 answers some iPhone 3G questions

image Since O2 went live (or as discussed here, dead) with online ordering of the new iPhone 3G they have provided some details on what you need to order and also answer some questions on upgrading, activation, returns and warranty. Full details can be found after the break and it makes interesting reading especially the part about activation at home.

What do I need to buy an iPhone 3G?

To purchase an iPhone 3G with a Pay Monthly tariff you need to be over 18, pass a credit check and have a bank account for the monthly Direct Debit payments. You’ll also need an email address you access regularly because your bills will be sent to you by email.
To purchase an iPhone 3G with a Pay & Go tariff online you need to be over 18 and have a credit or debit card to pay for iPhone.
To finish the activation process you’ll need to connect your iPhone 3G to your Mac or PC via iTunes so make sure that you have a broadband connection and that your Mac or PC meets the minimum specification required for iTunes below.
Mac system requirements

  • USB 2.0 port
  • Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later
  • iTunes v7.7 or later

Windows system requirements

  • USB 2.0 port
  • Windows Vista; Windows XP Home or professional with Service Pack 2 or later
  • iTunes v7.7 or later

How do I activate my iPhone 3G?

Once you’ve purchased your iPhone and chosen your tariff, you’ll need to finish the activation process using iTunes. Before you activate, if you’ve got contacts, music or photos on your old mobile that you want to keep, transfer them onto your computer. For more information go to
When you’re ready to finish activating iPhone 3G there are 3 simple steps:

  1. Go to on your computer, then download and install the latest iTunes.
  2. Connect your iPhone to a USB 2.0 port on your computer (but not on your keyboard) using the cable included in the box. iTunes will open automatically.
  3. iTunes will guide you through activating and synching stuff like your contacts and podcasts.


How do I upgrade to iPhone?

Existing iPhone customers upgrade to iPhone 3G for free*
To thank you for being an iPhone fan, we’re offering you an early upgrade to the iPhone 3G. You won’t have to wait until the end of your existing contract either, all you’ll need to do is agree to a new 18-month minimum term contract.
This special early upgrade offer is only available online until 11th October 2008.
O2 Pay Monthly customer upgrades
Existing O2 Pay Monthly customers can also upgrade to iPhone 3G. We’ll contact you when you’re eligible for an upgrade and talk you through the best options.
You can upgrade to iPhone 3G online, in one of our high street stores or by calling one of our upgrade advisors.

Can I return my iPhone?

If you’re not entirely satisfied with your iPhone purchase, you can return it within 14 days or receipt and will be eligible for a full refund or exchange. To return the iPhone, please contact Customer Service. You’ll then need to send the iPhone back to us and ensure the following:

  1. Securely package your iPhone with its original accessories so that they will not become damaged in transit.
  2. Affix the Goods Returns Authority label on your despatch note to the outside of the package ensuring no other addresses are visible.
  3. Take your parcel to a post office and obtain a proof of postage. This should be retained with the despatch note.
  4. Please retain the despatch note for your records and as your proof of purchase, as it will assist you if you need to contact O2 at a later date.

Please note

  1. Purchases cancelled due to a change of mind must be returned within 14 days of the date of receipt.
  2. Your iPhone must have no visible signs of customer damage.
  3. If your iPhone goes missing in transit, it will only be credited if a valid proof of postage can be produced.
  4. O2 reserves the right to issue a partial or zero credit if your iPhone and accessories are incomplete or damaged.
  5. If eligible, you can expect your credit within 30 days of the date of return.
  6. If you bought the iPhone with a Pay Monthly tariff and use the SIM card in these 14 days, you’ll have to pay for the pro-rated line rental amount and any charges outside of your allocated allowance.


Does the iPhone 3G come with a warranty?

All iPhones come with a 1 year limited Manufacturers warranty. If your iPhone experiences technical issues within a year of purchase, then the product must be returned to the point of purchase with a valid till receipt or other proof or purchase to enable repair, replacement or refund as appropriate. If you buy online, the easiest way to organise a repair or exchange is via Apple online, alternatively contact customer services.
