HTC Touch Sprints across the pond

Big news for HTC, and their aging mass-market device – the HTC Touch

Although the device has been available worldwide for a considerable time now, including the US, it has until now failed to make a connection with a operator.

However, shortly Sprint will be offering the device exclusively, with the device subsidised depending on contract terms. Heres the blurb:

With an easy finger swipe, Touch by HTC, exclusively from Sprint, offers both business and personal essentials with an easy-to-use interface

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. and BELLEVUE, Wash. — 10/17/2007 — Combining a dynamic touch screen experience with industry-leading network speeds, Sprint (NYSE: S) and HTC Corp. (TAIEX: 2498; “HTC”), today announced the upcoming availability of Touch by HTC, a full touch screen wireless phone integrating Windows Mobile 6 with advanced entertainment features. Operating on the Sprint Mobile Broadband network, the stylish Touch by HTC brings together email and other essential business applications with Sprint’s exclusive multimedia content including over-the-air music downloads, live TV and more.

With a nearly 3-inch display, Touch by HTC features integrated TouchFLO technology, developed by HTC, leveraging smooth navigation through menus with a finger swipe. In addition, the innovative TouchFLO cube brings a 3D cube interface allowing quick access to entertainment, communication tools and a “Dial-by-picture” photo caller ID screen.

Touch by HTC leverages the broad functionality of Windows Mobile 6 with Outlook Mobile for smooth email integration, Office Mobile, Windows Live and the ability to run thousands of third-party applications. It also allows users to surf the web with Internet Explorer, send and receive emails, chat on Messenger and send files to their own web space through Windows Live. The home screen provides one-touch access to email, text messages, calendar appointments and contacts, as well as current weather conditions and forecasts for hundreds of cities around the world.

Versatile and compact, Touch by HTC provides quick and easy access to Sprint-exclusive content, including:

  • Sprint Music Store(SM), powered by Groove Mobile, which allows users to browse and wirelessly download full-length songs directly to their phone from a selection of more than 1.8 million songs
  • Sprint Exclusive Entertainment (SEE), the industry’s only made-for-mobile sports and entertainment video programming network
  • Sprint TV(SM) with more than 50 channels of live and on-demand video and audio.
  • More than a dozen streaming radio stations , including Sprint Radio and SIRIUS
  • On-Demand with up-to-date information on sports, weather, news, money and more customized by zip code.
  • (Standard data charges apply to all downloads from Sprint.)

“Our customers appreciate the ability to have one device that seamlessly balances both personal needs and business demands,” said Danny Bowman, vice president of product development for Sprint. “Touch by HTC is unlike any other wireless device because it brings together the power of Windows Mobile with easy access to our entertainment applications. This attractive device easily lets you watch news as it happens, respond to email, download your favorite songs and stay connected with the office, family and friends.”

“This device provides a broad set of consumers with the benefits of a smartphone with the style and ease of use they demand,” said Peter Chou, chief executive officer of HTC. “Touch by HTC presents a new, more intuitive touch experience that simplifies access to the most commonly used smartphone features such as dialing, messaging and Web browsing. It also improves the video and music experience with the addition of Sprint TV and the Sprint Music Store.”

“People want an easy-to-use companion in a mobile phone, freeing them up to leave the office or home and get more done while on-the-go,” said Pieter Knook, senior vice president, Mobile Communications Business, Microsoft Corp.” The Sprint Touch is the result of the strong relationship between Microsoft, HTC and Sprint and offers customers a fun user experience, the power of Sprint’s network and the ease-of-use of Windows Mobile which makes it easy to browse the Web, send email or enjoy your digital entertainment.”

Touch by HTC offers MicroSD card slot that supports up to 4GB – a 512MB card is included with the device. Additional features include a 2.0 MP camera/camcorder with up to 5X zoom, advanced stereo Bluetooth and Voice-activated dialing.

Touch by HTC measures 4.0″ x 2.4″ x 0.6″ and weighs just 4 ounces. This device will be priced at $249.99 with a two-year subscriber agreement and a $100 mail-in rebate. Standard data rates apply for music and other content downloads.

Touch by HTC will be available on November 4 in all Sprint channels including www.Sprint.com and 1-800-SPRINT1. Customers can register to be among the first to purchase Touch by HTC at www.sprint.com/touch.

First HTC Touch Dual review live

CoolSmartPhone.com have just gone live with what is probably the first full review of the all new HTC Touch Slider.

There are two versions of the HTC Touch Dual, one has a 16-key phone-style keypad with number keys and the other has a 20-key QWERTY style keypad (similar to the Blackberry or Sony P1i) where each key has two letters associated with it. This review deals with a pre-production version of the 20 key variant

Hopefully, we’ll be getting our hands on a 16 key production review device shortly, but for a head start, head over to CoolSmartPhone’s review

    T-Mobile announce Pay-Per-Day Mobile Broadband

T-Mobile recently made some changes to their ‘Web-n-Walk’ mobile data services and have now announced a new ‘Pay-per-day’ mobile broadband service:

Pay-per-day mobile broadband launches for the first time in Britain as T-Mobile launches laptop surfing for never more than £4 a day. From November 1st, the mobile operator, who has pioneered Internet on the move, will offer new and existing customers the chance to get super fast Internet access without a contract. The operator has also slashed prices on its pay monthly mobile broadband tariffs, web’n’walk Plus and Max to enable mobile broadband users the chance to go mobile for less.

Customers can for the first time experience a high speed Internet connection wherever they are via a T-Mobile USB modem and their laptop, without the monthly commitment. Unlimited browsing allows customers to take full advantage of the internet, the way they like at any time, without the constraints of a fixed line, for no more than £4. Customers will be notified if they are using web’n’walk Plus Daily regularly enough to benefit from an upgrade to web n walk Plus or Max contract, which is now only £20 or £35 per month for unlimited web browsing!

T-Mobile has also confirmed that it will be permanently cutting the cost of its web‘n’walk Plus and web’n’walk Max price plans. The web’n’walk Plus package, which allows you to browse, email, download, stream and instant message, has been slashed from £29 a month to never more than £20 a month. Meanwhile, web’n’walk Max, which provides all the same benefits of web’n’walk Plus as well as Internet calling services like Skype, has been cut from £44 a month to never more than £35. The new web’n’walk tariffs are available to all existing customers as well as new customers available from now.

Richard Warmsley, Head of Internet on the Move, T-Mobile, said:

“We know consumers value the flexibility of mobile broadband, accessing the internet for all the reasons they love, whenever they want, wherever they are. Now they can try this just £4 without the constraints of a fixed line. When they are ready, we’ll happily recommended a monthly mobile broadband plan, that gives them even more value at our new reduced prices.

Our experience shows that customers want clear and simple price plans that offer value for money, and that is why we are offering flat-rate unlimited price packages and have further improved the value of our web’n’walk Plus and Max packages.”

Also within the portfolio of mobile broadband services, T-Mobile offers the largest worldwide Wi-Fi network, with over 1,200 HotSpots in key locations across the UK and 21,000 worldwide. The network offers the fastest 3G across the UK with speeds of up to 3.6mb per second, increasing to 7.2mb per second later this year.

    Key features:

  • T-Mobile the first operator to offer unlimited* pay-per-day broadband available to anyone, across in the UK
  • Web’n’walk Plus Daily gives unlimited broadband Internet access for never more than £4 a day
  • Web’n’walk Plus reduced from £29 to £20 a month
  • Web’n’walk Max from £44 to only £35 a month
  • The tariff is subject to a ‘fair use’ policy but as yet we don’t have the details from T-mobile as to what they consider fair use. It seems like a decent option for those that don’t need to use mobile data every day.

Orange release the HTC TyTN II

I know a lot of people are very keen to get their hands on the TyTN II and have been waiting for the device to be released by their favourite operator. O2 and T-Mobile have the TyTN II available already.

I’ve had a few emails about this today and according to the information I have, Orange now have the HTC TyTN II in stock and will commence shipping on Monday 15th October, quite a lot earlier than we anticipated.

I’m just seeking confirmation from our contacts at Orange and will let you know!

EDIT: Orange Business Customer Service department confirm that you can now order the unit and that the device only price is £300 + VAT.

Orange confirm the HTC Touch Dual

We’ve just had confirmation from Orange that they will indeed be carrying the HTC Touch Dual here in the UK.

    HTC Touch Dual

    HTC Touch Dual

As we all know, there are two versions of the HTC Touch Dual, one has a 16-key phone-style keypad with number keys and the other has a 20-key QWERTY style keypad (similar to the Blackberry or Sony P1i) where each key has two letters associated with it. My Orange contact informs me that Orange will only be stocking the 16-key number pad style version of the device, possible as they feel that the 20-key version is too complicated.

It’s probably worth pointing out, once again, that neither version of the Touch Dual will come with WiFi, HTC have confirmed that none of the European versions of the Dual will have WiFi capability. We’ve no idea why they would choose to exclude this feature which has now become standard on most devices, I’m sure that this omission will prove to be a problem for many.

It would seem that the folks over at MoDaCo have received a similar tip-off from Orange so we are thinking that the information must be accurate.

Finally, the rumour is that the HTC Touch Dual will be arriving on the Orange network in the middle of November.
