REDFLY Finalist for 2009 Andrew Seybold Choice Award

We’ve spoken about the Celio Redfly Mobile Companion a fair bit recently after we reviewed the product last year. Last month Memphis Police department announced that they just deployed 1,200 of the Redfly units as an alternative to in-car laptops.

Today more great news for Celio as the REDFLY Mobile Companion has just been named finalist for 2009 Andrew Seybold Choice Award.

Celio Corp today announced that its flagship product, the REDFLY Mobile  Companion, has been named a finalist for the 2009 Andrew Seybold Choice  Awards in the category of Most Innovative Mobile Service. The category  winner will be named April 1, 2009, at the 19th Annual Andrew Seybold  Wireless Dinner at CTIA Wireless 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“We’re honored that the REDFLY Mobile Companion has been named as a  finalist for such a prestigious award by a wireless industry veteran  with credentials like Andrew Seybold,” said Kirt Bailey, president and  CEO of Celio Corp. “Andrew’s influence in the mobile and wireless  industries runs deep, and his acknowledgement of the REDFLY and its  technology as an innovative product reinforces Celio’s vision of  providing solutions that enable the smartphone to become the primary  mobile computing device.”

The REDFLY Mobile Companion has a large screen, full QWERTY keyboard,  touchpad, and USB, VGA and media ports, enabling people to use their  smartphones like a laptop. The REDFLY has no OS, storage or processor,  but uses the smartphone’s computing power to give users the ability to  interact with the smartphone’s familiar user interface or access remote  PC and company applications on an 800×480 resolution display.

The total cost of ownership of the REDFLY is significantly less than  that of a laptop or netbook because the REDFLY does not require any  additional software, wireless subscriptions or IT management. This tool  significantly increases productivity and efficiency of mobile workers.

unboxings.com Site Launched!

Regular visitors to the site will know that we always start device review with an unboxing video which invariably includes a quick tour of the product. Just hit the link videos link up at the top of the page to see how many videos we already have.

Love them or hate them there’s no denying the popularity of unboxing videos, YouTube is full of them and even my own YouTube profile has over 3.8 million views.

A few months ago Paul (from MoDaCo) and I were talking about unboxing videos and at the time we said ‘we should really do something with our videos’, as we both have a number of them on YouTube and sitting on a few of the other video hosting services.

After a couple of months of talking about it we finally did something and Paul and I are now pleased to announce the launch of our new site unboxings.com

unboxings.com

We are both uploading our unboxing videos to the site (there are still some more to go on) but the site will act as one central place to have a look at past and present videos in, we hope, a cleanly laid out site. Between us we unbox new ‘toys’ every few days so there should be new contnt added fairly regularly.

Of course we’ll still have videos and reviews here on tracyandmatt.co.uk but unboxings.com will be a place to see only unboxing videos!

Please do let us have your feedback. Paul and I are keen to know what you think of the site and the concept itself and why do you think unboxing videos are a love or hate thing??

HTC Touch Diamond vs Diamond2

It may have only been announced a few weeks ago but the lucky guys over at CNet Asia have already managed to get their hands on the HTC Touch Diamond2.

I’m still a big fan of the HTC Touch Diamond so when I heard about the Diamond2 I was pretty pleased to hear that the updated (or ‘refreshed’) version wouldn’t be much larger than its predecessor. So if like me you are wondering what the two will look like side-by-side then take a look at the photos the CNet guys managed to take.

diamond2-vs-diamond

As you can see from the image above, the Diamond2 is a little longer than the Diamond. This is mainly because of the WVGA (480×800) screen in the Diamond2 vs the VGA (480×640)  screen in the Diamond. In terms of the width the two are the same.

sc003

Notice that the back of the Diamond2 is now flat. Gone are the facets of the Diamond, thank goodness! They were nice to look at but totally impractical!

sc004

The Diamond2 is a little thicker than the Diamond, looking at this photo perhaps 3mm more? I’m guessing that this is because of the now built in memory card slot on the Diamond2 that was missing from the Diamond?

HTC Touch Diamond2 pre-order

Desperate to get your hands on the new HTC Touch Diamond2? Me too!

Although the HTC Touch Diamond2 was only officially announced by HTC last week at MWC there has been a terrific demand for information relating to the handset and its release date. We may not know exactly when the Diamond2 will go on sale but but most are predicting that it will hit the shops by the end of March!

As with previous new HTC handsets we expect that the demand will be high and initial shipments will be limited, so if you want to reserve your’s now so that you get it on launch day then why not pre-order the HTC Touch Diamond2 from Clove Technology?

Clove are offering pre-order now and although the final price has not been set in stone it’s expect to be a respectable £360 (£414 inc VAT). Head over to the Diamond2 product page on the Clove website to find out more and if you are feeling flush then buy me one too!

Overview of the HTC Touch Diamond2

The HTC Touch Diamond – Now improved!

When you first see and start exploring the HTC Touch Diamond2, you’ll be struck by its brilliant looks and amazed by the intuitive controls.

In today’s world, a conversation can take many forms, from voice to text … but there’s always a person on the other end. The HTC Touch Diamond2 arranges your conversations by people, not just by how you speak with them.

When looking at your contacts, you now can see a history of your conversation in whatever form it took place. It doesn’t matter if you get asked about a recent email while you are talking on the phone or if you’re in a café reminiscing about a friend’s recent text – all your interactions are neatly laid out for viewing and follow-up in a tree of communication with that person.

One indisputable fact about smartphones is a big screen on a small phone is good. That’s why HTC have stretched the Touch Diamond2’s display to its very limits, whilst keeping the same compact size. Enjoy videos, websites, photos and any other images on the ultra sharp wide screen display. The high resolution screen will reveal every minute detail in the most vivid way.

Improvements on the Touch Diamond2 include an extra 0.4" on the display, now 3.2".  A microSDHC card slot and bigger battery add to the reasons why this device is so good.  There is even a G Sensor, FM radio and zoom function for photos and web pages.

The Touch Diamond2 helps you keep connected with friends, business partners and world events, it also helps complement who you are. The Touch Diamond2 is your perfect companion.

    Toshiba TG01 now official

A few weeks ago we spoke about the Toshiba TG01 as images of the handset had started circulating about the internet and there were lot of rumours relating to its specification etc. However Toshiba have now made the TG01 official thanks to a press conference at MWC and subsequent press release (which I almost missed under the deluge of PR emails!).

The TG01 looks like an exceptionally well designed Windows Mobile handset, it’s very thin at under 10mm yet has enough room for an extremely fast Qualcomm Snapdragon processor running at 1GHz and also 512MB ROM and 256MB RAM. I don’t think the TG01 will be a slouch but because it has a 4.1" WVGA display it certainly wont be one of the smallest handsets out there.

Price and availability are yet to be confirmed but obviously I’ll be trying very hard to get my hands on one!!

    tg01

Toshiba Corporation, today announced the new Toshiba TG01 – a super-slim, highly powered, multimedia-focused, mobile device ideal for the consumer that demands high-quality performance on the move – and raises the bar for mobile handsets. The Toshiba TG01 will be available across Europe in Summer 2009.

“I am thrilled to announce the launch of TG01 in Europe, the market that we position at the center of our Digital products strategy,” said Hisatsugu Nonaka, Corporate Senior Executive Vice President of Toshiba Corporation. “The TG01 is the future, a truly mobile device that satisfies consumer demands for total mobile connectivity, something most of today’s handsets fail to do. Our challenges was to provide an innovative product that goes beyond today’s needs to anticipate tomorrow’s capabilities. In creating the TG01, we’ve integrated the very best of our mobile and LCD technologies in an attractive, premium quality multimedia handset with internet access capabilities. TG01 represents Toshiba’s commitment to excellence in an exciting new category, and we look forward to launching it in the global market.

Featuring an enormous 4.1” Wide-VGA (800×480) touch-screen display, the TG01 comes with image  tuning technology fostered from Toshiba’s LCD TV ”Regza”. Using advanced picture-definition technologies taken directly from the company’s acclaimed range of LCD TVs, the TG01’s delivers greater colour image control, ensuring that the display is bright and vivid, with pin-sharp processing for fast-moving video playback.  Add support for a wide range of popular video formats and it’s clear the TG01 sets new standards for portable entertainment on a mobile device.
Toshiba’s TG01 is the world’s first mobile device with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon™ chipset. Snapdragon uses a custom processor design to deliver an industry leading combination of 1GHz computing and high-power efficiency. By offering processing performance, immersive multimedia, built-in GPS, and high-speed 3G connectivity integrated into a single chip, Snapdragon enables the TG01 to be a groundbreaking, super slim device that is immensely powerful.

”Toshiba’s TG01 device leverages Snapdragon’s unprecedented capabilities to deliver a truly innovative user experience with nearly twice the processing power, more advanced multimedia, and thinnest form factor compared to today’s smartphones.” said Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice president of Qualcomm.  “We are pleased to be working with Toshiba to  deliver Snapdragon™ in the TG01 to the industry, demonstrating how evolutions in wireless technology are redefining what it means to be mobile.”

"The next generation of mobile computing is being defined by the user experience and by new devices that offer fast processing, rich graphics and intuitive software,” said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, chief executive officer of Qualcomm. ”The TG01 leverages Snapdragon’s unprecedented capabilities to take a leading role in this device category.  We look forward to our continued collaborations with Toshiba in their efforts to deliver the most exciting mobile computing experience possible.”

Built around Windows Mobile®, the TG01 lets you enjoy your favourite multimedia and web content as well as work efficiently.  Featuring Internet Explorer® Mobile, the TG01 delivers a mobile browsing experience on par with what you’d expect from a desktop computer, with support for even the most graphically rich web sites and the ability to easily complete web transactions, such as banking or social networking site updates.  With Microsoft Office Outlook® Mobile it’s also easy to manage your personal and professional email, as well as contacts and calendar.

“Windows phones bring customers closer to the people and information they care about, whether they are communicating by phone, email or through instant messaging,” said Andrew Lees, Senior Vice President, Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft Corp. “Toshiba’s TG01 embodies our principle of helping people get more done when they are mobile; we are pleased to help introduce their new mobile internet phone.”

The large touch-screen and Toshiba’s custom-built, three dimensional user interface provide users with easy-to-use navigation between different applications.  Innovative gesture operations also make it easy to carry out everyday tasks without even touching the screen – a simple shake when the device is ringing, for instance, will automatically activate an incoming call, while an integrated tilt sensor allows users to switch between open applications just by tilting the device to the left or right. Also coupling with floating touch pod and zooming bar makes TG01’s one hand operation easier, and being 9.9mm1 thin makes sure it can fit into a slim pocket unnoticed – packing more technology into less space than before.

As a communications device, the TG01 also sets new benchmarks for others to follow.  Providing users with access to a selection of social interaction platforms, including Windows Live Messenger (MSN®), as well as connectivity to GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 3G HSPDA/HSUPA, and support for Bluetooth v2.0 and WiFi makes it easy and simple to keep in touch.

Integrated GPS and A-GPS technology allows the TG01 to double up as a fully-fledged satellite navigation system, providing clear and graphically rich information.  The same graphical proficiency allows the TG01 to double up as a capable mobile gaming platform, with the high-resolution wide-screen display and touch-sensitive screen combining with an in-built G-sensor to provide high quality gaming on the move.

“The TG01 is quite simply the next step in cutting edge mobile technology that will enable us to deliver mobile content at unprecedented levels of speed and quality, and will help to firmly establish Toshiba in EMEA as a leading partner for Network Operators that want to deliver value-added services and convergence.” said Hidehito Koka, General Manager, Toshiba Mobile Communications Division, Europe.

Toshiba’s TG01 will be available in two colours, with consumers able to choose from a subtle deep black or a vivid white. Pricing and network availability will be confirmed at a later date.

    Toshiba TG01 specification:

    • Size:  70mm x129mm x 9.9mm

    LG Arena press release

Although we mentioned the launch of LG’s new flagship handset, the LG Arena, a few days ago we didn’t managed to get our hands on the full press release. So to rectify that, and for your reading pleasure here is the full announcement:

    LGArena_KM900_PressPhoto

LG Electronics, a worldwide technology and design leader in mobile communications, today announced the launch of LG ARENA(LG-KM900) at the World Mobile Congress 2009. ARENA is a fully loaded multimedia phone that offers an exhilarating audio and video experience made possible by LG’s intuitive new 3D S-Class User Interface.

ARENA, LG’s new flagship model for 2009, is packed with top-of-the-line multimedia features and a totally new 3D UI of the next generation. It is the first and currently the only multimedia phone for the global market to use Dolby Mobile from Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB) to deliver an exhilarating surround sound experience for video content and enhance the sound of music content.

“What really makes ARENA special is its intuitive 3D S-Class UI, which is unlike anything that has appeared on a phone before,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We surveyed consumers and found that they were unhappy with current interfaces. They wanted a simple, fast and fun way to use multimedia and other features, but also an experience that was dynamic and interesting. We’ve done this so well with our brand new S-Class UI that it will set new standards for handsets in both functionality and fun.”

The intuitive 3D S-Class UI – S for superior – makes its debut with ARENA and will be featured in other premium LG models launching later this year.

    3D S-Class User Interface

    Intuitive

Intuitive and life-like touch-based 3D menus take the fuss out of searching through contacts and multimedia content. Reel Scrolling lays out menus as if they were on a film reel, providing icons for each choice that are so easy-to-understand no further explanation is needed. Dragging a finger across the S-Class UI’s 3D reels allows users to scroll through entertainment options.

In ARENA’s camera mode, an intuitive on-screen dial, similar to those found on many high-end standalone camera, makes it easy to customize shot settings for picture-perfect results.

    Fast

ARENA’s S-Class UI was designed from the very start to leverage the advantages of touchscreens to eliminate unnecessary menus and steps. At its core is a cube layout that provides four customizable home screens that provides fast access to all features by flipping the cube with the flick of a finger. With multiple faces, the cube allows for four times more shortcuts than a single screen, making menus easier to access.

    clip_image007

Also created with fast access in mind are ARENA’s Elastic Lists, which make it easier to browse through contacts and other catalogued information. When touched, list items stretch like a rubber band to provide more detailed information, options or easy editing. This eliminates the extra step of switching to a new screen, saving time and making it easier to browse to other choices as well.

Fast yet smooth 3D transitions between menus are made possible by the perfect pairing of LG’s S-Class UI and a powerful AMD processor.

    clip_image010

    Dynamic and Fun

Colourful graphics give ARENA a sense of dynamism and fun found in no other phone. ARENA’s dynamic graphics are especially evident in the phone’s Floating Image Gallery. When held upright, the phone displays photos neatly in rows. But turn the phone on its side and the photos cascade off the screen and reappear much larger. Sliding a finger from top to bottom, shows photos taken on different days. Dragging a finger from left-to-right shows photos taken on the same day.

Going one step further, its Tactile Analogue Alarm Clock and Radio Tuner make it almost feel like moving a clock’s hands or turning an actual dial.

    Multimedia Features that Come Alive

The S-Class UI is the perfect 3D gateway to enter ARENA’s amazing multimedia environment, which includes immersive audio and razor sharp video for the perfect portable entertainment experience.

ARENA is the first multimedia phone for the global market that uses Dolby Mobile to enhance the listening enjoyment for both video and music content. The technology, developed by Dolby Laboratories, the global leader in entertainment technologies, unleashes the power of surround sound for movies and video and delivers rich, resonant sound for music. A range of equalizer presets to fit all genres and individual tastes make the experience even better. A built-in FM transmitter means ARENA can play music wirelessly through a car or home stereo. A standard 3.5 mm audio jack means ARENA can be paired with any headphones.

LG ARENA’s large 3.0-inch full touchscreen display has incredible WVGA resolution, which is four times sharper than QVGA. With the clearest LCD screen available on a mobile phone, ARENA is ideal for watching DVD quality DivX or Xvid movies on-the-go.

D1 recording capability captures DVD-resolution video that looks great even when played back on a large TV. For added fun and versatility, ARENA can record 120 frames per second slow motion video to catch every detail.

ARENA can handle hundreds of music and movie files with 40 GB of storage, including 8GB of internal memory and a micro SD slot. The powerful battery provides up to 30 hours of MP3 playtime and 300 hours of standby time.

The five megapixel camera goes far beyond what is found on most phones, with high-end features and incredible image quality comparable to that of a standalone camera. The ability to set the camera for auto or manual focus help perfectly preserve each moment.

ARENA’s audio, video and photos can easily be shared on social networking sites like Facebook and YouTube thanks to 3G HSDPA 7.2 networks and Wi-Fi. The phone also supports Google Mobile Service which includes Google search, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube and Google Blogs. A-GPS and geo-tagging are also possible. ARENA’s multi-touch capabilities greatly enhance the web surfing experience.

All of these powerful features are packed in ARENA’s sleek and refined metal body, perfectly sized to grab and go at 105.9 x 55.3 x 11.95 mm. Tempered glass over the touchscreen ensures long-lasting durability to keep the phone looking sophisticated and clean. ARENA will be available in silver and black titanium colour schemes.

The stylish new handset is exclusive to Vodafone in the UK, Spain, Germany and France (SFR) and available on a non-exclusive basis in Italy. Customers can ensure that they are the first to receive information about the HTC Magic’s availability, pricing and pre-ordering by registering their interest via their local Vodafone website from today.

The introduction of the HTC Magic is the result of a successful relationship between Vodafone and HTC, and Vodafone’s joining, late last year, of the Open Handset Alliance.

A tablet-style device, with a sleek design and unprecedented compactness for a smartphone featuring the Android platform, the HTC Magic enables a superior mobile internet experience, providing broad flexibility for personalisation via the application-rich Android Market. “The announcement of the HTC Magic is an important step for Android and the Open Handset Alliance,” says Andy Rubin, Senior Director of Mobile Platforms at Google. “With it, Vodafone is opening up the mobile web for consumers across Europe and giving more third-party developers a platform on which they can build the next wave of killer applications.”

Available from free on various price plans, the HTC Magic has a 3.2” QVGA touch screen display and features a trackball and navigational buttons for quick, easy access. LG to have 50 new Windows Mobile based handsets by 2012?

MWC today has been full of surprises, first of all we find out that Samsung has officially dropped Windows Mobile in favour of Symbian on its new Omnia HD handset (and possible dropped all together) and then in a completely opposite direction we hear from LG that they have ‘Deepened their Alliance with Microsoft’ and are making Windows their ‘Primary Smartphone Platform’.

Yong Nam, LG’s vice chairman and chief executive officer, went further to say that LG plan to bring up to 26 new Windows Phones to market in 2012 alone and, with a new agreement with Microsoft in place, this could result in more than 50 new LG Windows Phones!

A good day for Windows Phones and Windows Phone fans! 🙂

Take a look at the full press release below:

LG Electronics (LG) and Microsoft Corp. today announced an expanded alliance to dramatically increase the number of LG phones running Windows. As part of the agreement, LG will make Windows its primary operating system for its smartphones and will increase both the number of Windows® phones in its portfolio and the total volume of Windows® phones it distributes. This will create a tenfold increase in the volume of Windows® phones available from LG in 2009 and bring up to 26 new Windows® phones to market in 2012 alone. Overall, the agreement can result in more than 50 new LG Windows® phones.

“New LG phones running Windows will take advantage of the excitement in this dynamically growing market,” said Yong Nam, vice chairman and chief executive officer, LG Electronics. “The Windows platform brings flexible and customer-friendly software that ties into the Web and the PC, giving our phones a wide range of new capabilities to address an increasing number of segments and markets.”

“Windows® phones enable people to tap into digital experiences that span their lives so they can connect to the people, information and services they care about most,” said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft. “Integrating Windows software with LG’s design leadership will bring new experiences to help enrich people’s lives.”

The agreement also includes a commitment by both companies to create joint teams for research and development, to focus on creating phones with powerful features built on tight integration between hardware and software. It also details joint marketing efforts to expand the reach of these phones at a range of prices in markets across the globe.

This agreement follows a memorandum of understanding signed by LG and Microsoft on Nov. 3, 2008, which put in place strategic collaboration on the converged mobile device business.

Complementing the expanded alliance, LG also announced the LG-GM730, which incorporates LG’s signature style with a slim (11.9 mm) and seamless profile and rounded edges. The Windows® phone is user-friendly with features like one-click e-mail setup and easy finger navigation while browsing with the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile. Available in the first half of 2009 on Windows Mobile 6.1, LG will add Windows Mobile 6.5 version to their portfolio in the second half of 2009.
